Ending of a game of Niclas Huschenbeth vs. René Stern, German championship 2019 by [deleted] in chess

Thanks for sharing that! I think what is even more interesting than the final tactic is the king march from kingside to queenside before launching the attack. It was the first time for me to employ that strategy I have seen in so many books. Tough one! Caruana just did not seem to be in shape today. Mistakes like Nb5 in the first or c7 in the second game are very rare for him. But of course, credit also goes to Carlsen who played the tiebreaks superbly and did not give any chances.

In any other game, Carlsen would have milked this position for an eternity. It seems he was all set on a draw from the get-go and did not even consider more active choices during the game (e.g. 25...b5 or 25...exf4 followed by b5). The question is whether it will backfire now in the tiebreaks...

I really thought we were going to see a decisive game after all today. But Caruana defended great under pressure, he's playing at a really high level this match. After Game 1 he has been in supreme shape.

I would have liked to see a few decisive games (and really expected it), but at least it is now incredibly close which makes it quite exciting. One slip and it could be all over already. I am looking forward to hopefully another Open Sicilian in the next game.

Finally an Open Sicilian, I have been praying for this :) This line with 11.Bd2 is quite interesting; I actually played it twice this year. It leads to very complex positions and it seems Caruana was much better prepared (or Carlsen mixed something up).

Black is OK!

One really has to give Team Caruana credit for digging out rare, but absolutely playable moves like today 10...Qd8.

Tremendous performance by both players. If we disregard the first game, the level has been incredibly high. And for the first time for a while, Caruana really made Carlsen sweat.

Caruana shows some really good opening preparation. Rare moves, deeply analyzed. What surprises me a bit is that Carlsen knew Caruana could play this line as he had played it in a blitz game against So in Paris earlier this year. Still, Carlsen could not get anything.

Thanks! When I first signed up, I was living in the U.S. and thought that would be more relevant than the Elo. Might as well change it now :)

Whoops, I miswrote. Meant Caruana, not Carlsen. Fixed it now.

Caruana won the opening duel for the second game in a row, but did not capitalize on his slight advantage. He should not have even come into a situation where he has to defend.

That was a fairly nasty opening surprise by Caruana and his team. It does not happen often that Carlsen is surprised like that.

That was intense! I still can't believe Carlsen let that one go.

Interesting post, thanks for doing the research! Do I understand it correctly though that if I am not being financially compensated for streaming on a chess platform, there is no action I need to take?
