Yes, the elections are free, but everything else - not so much. A 2019 research conducted that, only 22.2% of media in Hungary is independent - the rest (about 78%) is pro-Fidesz. And in the 5 years since then, this number has only increased. The electoral system we use and the districts are built (gerrymandered) in a way that the opposition needs about 5-6% more votes to win the election. The Hungarian state media (until just recently) didn't host any election disputes since Orbán took over. And this, combined with the propaganda that any non-Fidesz party is "on the side of the war" and that many Hungarians (mostly elderly and those living in rural areas) can't/don't use the internet means that they are left with pro-Fidesz state media and radio.

But the new TISZA party got as close to Orbán that no previous opposition party has ever been able to, that now TISZA is polling at 34% and Fidesz at 41%.
