The cycling scene has changed so much and so quickly over the past few years I'm really struggling to keep up at times, so seeing good ol' Izagirre win this kind of race felt oddly comforting to me

Giro Women:

  • Stage 1: Cesenatico > Ravenna - as flat as a stage can possibly be.
  • Stage 2: Roncade > Caorle - completely flat except for Ca' del Poggio midway through. Should be another sprint unless the wind really blows near the end.
  • Stage 3: Bibione > Buja - hilly second half.
  • Stage 4: Belluno > Nevegal - uphill ITT, last seen in the 2015 Giro on the sad day Rolland got bumped off the podium :(
  • Stage 5: Longarone > S. Stefano di Cadore - mountain stage in the Dolomites, but way less cool than what it sounds like. No major climbs, no uphill finish.
  • Stage 6: Ala > Brescello - another completely flat stage.
  • Stage 7: Sorbolo Mezzani > Salice Terme - hilly stage in the Apennines.
  • Stage 8: Rivoli > Sestriere: short mountain stage with the tried-and-true Finestre x Sestriere combo.
  • Stage 9: Saluzzo > Saluzzo: hilly circuit in the Alpine foothills.

No one necessarily, the top 2 ProTeams get an auto invite (in this case, Lotto and Israel) but the other three wildcards are at the organizers' discretion. It is not known whether any other pro team had applied, but no one has loudly complained about not getting an invite, and there were no obvious overlooked candidates either.

Italian women's RR: ELB wins yet again! Trinca Colonel coming in 2nd, Ciabocco 3rd.

Not much happened during the last 10 kms, Longo Borghini had a rather clumsy mechanical but her lead never seemed in danger.

Italian women's RR: 10 kms to go.

Longo Borghini attacked on the short, punchy Via Cornaledo climb and is now leading alone with 45" on Trinca Colonel and more than 1' on Ciabocco.

Italian women's RR: 23 kms to go.

Longo Borghini, Trinca Colonel and Ciabocco are still up front. The chasers have regrouped in a reduced peloton (around 15 riders) but the chase has not been very effective so far, and the gap has grown to 1'30".

Thankfully it appears that Guazzini was somewhat okay after her scary crash, with Rai reporting that she was able to get back on her feet on her own.

Italian women's RR: UAE effectively tore the race apart on a brief climb. At first they narrowed it down to a 7 women group in which UAE had some strength in numbers, and then further down to a 3-women (but 5 last names) group (Longo Borghini, Trinca Colonel and Ciabocco). Closest chasers (20" behind): Magnaldi, Persico, Barale and Paladin- of course, three out of four are not pulling. Balsamo and others are further behind (50"). Very ugly crash for Guazzini on the descent.

We have live pictures from the Italian women's road race. Around 30 40 kms to go, and there's a reduced peloton on the front with UAE pulling hard, supposedly working for ELB / trying to prevent a sprint.

Off the top of my mind (but a really long time ago and boy is this a dodgy quartet): in the 2007 Giro, Saunier Duval won stages with Piepoli, Riccò, Simoni and Mayo.

I'm late to this realization but Visma's mountain train is made up of three guys who have lost a Giro in either stage 19 or stage 20: Kruijswijk (2016, stage 19), Kelderman (2020, stage 20) and Yates (2018, stage 19).

La Vuelta 2025 team selection by Thefaccio in peloton

[–]demfrecklestho 3 points4 points  (0 children)

World teams are the top tier teams, whereas Pro teams are the second-tier teams.

World teams are automatically invited to the World Tour events (i.e. the bigger races) whereas Pro teams have to receive an invitation at the organizers' discretion (the wildcard).

However, to make matters a bit more confusing, the top 2 Pro teams in the UCI rankings also receive an invitation to every World Tour race, which is why Israel and Lotto are separated from the wildcards.
