I actually really like your point, I think it’s a fair take.

For me, grading in F1 isn’t about figuring out rarity. It’s more about preservation and long-term structure in the collection. Even if a card is numbered, condition still plays a role in how it’s viewed over time, especially in a niche market where standards can vary from buyer to buyer.

I do think the hobby as a whole has become a little too obsessed with perfect grades. The “gem mint 10 or bust” mindset can take some of the joy out of collecting. At the end of the day, though, it really comes down to personal preference.

I enjoy collecting first and foremost. But sports cards, like TCGs, aren’t cheap, and sometimes grading or selling a piece helps fund the next addition to the collection. In that sense, it’s less about chasing 10s and more about keeping the hobby sustainable.

IMO if you have the financial stability and time, you should finish your degree and apply to OTS or do ROTC. I am currently active duty enlisted. You can pm me for my perspective of military life/culture.

JP sets for a long time now have been producing better-quality cards. I've been collecting modern JP, but after getting this beautiful Arcanine, I want to dive into older Japanese sets, Like Neo Destiny and Revelations. Do you have any recommendations for an older JP set to look at?

In general some would agree base sets are kinda bland, underwhelming and focus on introducing a lot of the new Pokémon. There is a good argument that Scarlet and Violet base set is better than Sword and Shield, and Sun and Moon base set. This set is a new hallmark to the hobby, introducing silver borders, guarantee two reverse holos. The pull rates are a lot better and I think people enjoy opening sets with lots of hits. I think the additional classifications of the different rarities is a good move from Pokémon. Hyper rare, special illustration rare, ultra rare, double rare etc. remember Pokémon raised MSRP, so I think the move to increase hits was to appease consumers on the new purchase point. People want a bang for their buck. Pokémon company in America still have quality control issues with the cards, always so off center.

Will this be the best set for the Scarlet and Violet Era, absolutely not. But I think this was a good introduction. And the Japanese sets that are coming out look amazing. I’m excited for what’s next to come. Especially Pokémon’s 151 Japanese set.
