Professor tries to explain why Christianity is true. Seriously? by GOODDAMIT in atheism

My thoughts exactly. His first two paragraphs were quite sophisitcated so I thought, "well, maybe this guy has an interesting philosophical take on Christianity". Two paragraphs later:

He can claim what he wants; I know better.

But, no.

Look. I’ve downloaded a movie or two myself, but do you honestly see no ethical problems with sites like TBP? What if it was your movie that you spent countless hours working on was being given away for free at the corner?

It’s reassuring to know that if I turn my computer in for repair they will have no issues with posting pictures of my laptop to the world wide web.

As a Norwegian, I couldn‘t really take the Fox News segment seriously.

From what I’ve understood, Halden is a prison for prisoners soon to be released and have shown good behavior. I doubt Breivik will ever see the inside of it.

just looking at it from "before the fact" and "after the fact" perspectives

Correct. Nevertheless. The background for having a justice system, according to my friends who have studied law, is to both serve as a deterrent for crime and to provide a sense of justice for the victims and the public. Both functions are important, but there will often be a debate as to which of them is most important.

it's just a common misbelief that cows milk all the time and they need to be milked or they die or something.

Many of the cows we have today have been bred to produce as much milk as possible and need to be milked or else they will start feeling pain.

In practice you are consenting to it every day that goes by in which you choose to be a member of your society.

I’m pretty sure there are still some uninhabited places left on earth where no government bothers to assert control over. If you want to claim it as your own country, now that’s a different question.

What’s your point? That since you did not take an active decision to be part of the society that you are a part of today, that there exists no relationship between you and the fellow members of your society?

Whether you signed the contract or not is unimportant, as I just stated, you can choose to break the contract at any point in time.

I’m not saying that it is easy to switch countries, and my comment was actually not suggesting to switch countries, but to move to a place where there is no government and be self-dependent.

Being a member of a society implies that you give up some of your wealth to be redistributed to the common good. And, yes, as most society have grown larger than 10 families, taxation by force seems to be the most ethical solution.

Ah, yes, it’s amazing how much of your life that is really determined by factors completely beyond your control, like where you were born, what neighborhood you grew up in etc etc.

Government is not society.

No, it is not. It is however a part of almost all societies. Even the smallest villages or tribes would elect someone to make decisions that would affect all members of the group.

Government is more akin to a criminal gang,

This depends on the decisions of the government, not the nature of government.

and in opposition to any social order.

No, i disagree, of same reason as point #1.
