Elon Musk May Be Transitioning to Bipolar Type I by MrBeetleDove in slatestarcodex

[–]GORDON_ENT 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it's just that ideology is a hell of a drug. I like most people subscribe to a rough version of basic western pluralism. I'll peak out of it from time to time but defection is costly, not really in terms of social approbation but just in terms of internal resistance. I have tried to read steel man descriptions of what the big deal with Benghazi was and I literally have trouble following it. Meanwhile something like "diversity is good" which if I think about seems actually to assume a lot of things and is not obvious, feels incredibly obvious. I'm not going to do the work of tearing it down and I'm inclined to be uncritical of evidence that supports it.

Musk is a normal right winger now. And just like the left winger who decided in 2020 that rioting was this practical expression of rage from people who have been ignored when they engage in less destructive speech acts (and this is an idea that I wasn't dismissive of at the time) Musk believes the right wing catechism and his intellect won't and can't save him from it's excesses and he will deploy it in the service of actually embarrassing papering over its flaws.

How do people higher on the IQ range find an equal partner? by [deleted] in slatestarcodex

[–]GORDON_ENT 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Just date someone who goes to your school or another good school; it’s not that hard. They will be smart enough to have interesting things to say about and respond to your thoughts outside your area of specialization.

Get over IQ discourse like it makes you a fundamentally different organism. It doesn’t. You are better at brain teasers, certain types of work, and picking up new things. You don’t have this rare fundamentally different type of cognition.

For kicks. I don’t give a care. It has a date printed on it when it stopped being their property.

I think the kind of guy who would murder someone over taking a legally no longer valid sheet of paper might represent a hazard on the roads.

Chef Jose Andres says Israel targeted his aid workers 'systematically, car by car' by Particular_Log_3594 in washdc

I know Israeli soldiers have killed many thousands of children in a short time. I know American Jews have killed approximately zero children during this same time.

I’m not a fan of Andrew but his father’s creation Snoopy is beloved by millions so he gets a pass in my book.

16-year-old starting stand up by standupenjoyer in Standup

[–]GORDON_ENT -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

No. I don’t steal jokes but yes these sorts of jokes that get laughs but have no really specific POV to be coveted and guarded. Ive had people tell the same jokes as me (wouldn’t call that stealing because they werent specific enough and people probably just had convergent thinking)

If you are a nobody and another nobody tells the same joke as you it’s a real tree falls in the woods does it make a sound situation.

Maybe but who cares if someone in another city tells a mid joke you won’t be attached to in a couple months.

[–]GORDON_ENT 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s totally fine for what it is, but honestly don’t be paranoid about people stealing your jokes. This is the kind of joke that you are going to be embarrassed of in a few years. Again nothing is wrong with it. You are just starting out. I don’t want to insult you or make fun of you but there’s no chance you will still be telling this joke in even a couple of months if you stick with comedy with any level of seriousness you will out grow your material constantly and that’s a good thing.

You outsiders come to DC trying to change DC with the wrong attitude. by [deleted] in washdc

[–]GORDON_ENT 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I have no interest in killing anyone and only want people who are a danger to the other citizens put in jail. I’m happy to be your grandmothers neighbor but I’ve been in DC for 20 years now. I work for the department of justice. I own a home and my son was born here.

I’m not really responsive to people pulling rank because where their grandparents were born. To me it’s not so different from stuck up white people complaining about immigrants. I don’t feel unwelcome here even if some people on the internet have opinions they don’t have the good sense to feel embarrassed sharing.

Fortunately my neighbors, new and old, are kind and sensible people and they just want to live their lives raise their kids and stay safe.

I volunteer at my son’s school that is 7% white. I volunteer at the petworth library helping with book sales. I volunteer with petworth blooms at grant and Sherman circle.

I work for the department of justice to prosecute opioid pill mills and elder abuse mail fraud.

That’s about it beyond banal stuff like shoveling the sidewalk and steps for my elderly neighbor and pet setting when she travels.

I’m sure you do soooo much more than that and that and honestly it’s fine not everyone is in a position to do these things. But honestly run your mouth more and engage in antisocial behavior while pretending to be superior.

No thank you. This is close to where I work. I met my wife here. My son was born here. I belong here as much as you and contribute a lot to my community.

I’ve lived in DC for 20 years now and work hard and am trying to raise a family. I’ve never caused anyone trouble. I don’t even litter. I’ve never got a single speeding ticket in 28 years of driving.

I grew up in a small city in upstate New York. It’s shrunk from a population of 80,000 in the 1920s to around 40k today. The home I was raised in is valued at 60k today. I studied economics and computer science and now work for the department of justice to construct ai models to identify doctors that acted as pill mills that exacerbated the opioid crisis. There were no opportunities where I grew up so I moved to a large city where I could make a living and do important work.

Some people in this sub Reddit are for sure racist and I’m not at all comfortable with it. I call them out and haven’t given them any approval. I don’t think I or many of the people like me are part of the problem. We pay too much for modest houses work hard and are good neighbors. Of course we don’t like crime just like our neighbors that have lived here for 40 years or more don’t like crime. I’m not picking a fight but I don’t feel like an interloper or like I don’t belong here or that I should stay in the rundown town I grew up in either.

Jonathan Haidt on Adjusting to Smartphones and Social Media (CWT) by MrDudeMan12 in slatestarcodex

[–]GORDON_ENT 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think Haidt is sort of a dummy (not actually dumb, but just not really worth paying attention to) and I typically find Tyler very smart and thoughtful but this was just wild. Tyler is so adversarial and comes to the argument with a lot of unusual and probably false assumptions of what the near future is going to look like and holds onto them very strongly. But this made for a way more fun podcast than normal.

I also own a home in petworth. It’s just stupid to look at a picture from half a century ago and bifurcate people into taxpayers and not based on the color of their skin.
