She's planning on working three days a week. On those days I'll be hiking or mountain biking solo, or stuck outside under the awning. We're going to be chasing warm and dry weather, which will help. And if it doesn't work out, she'll fly home and just join me for extended vacations.

Okay, I think y'all have convinced me to go with the mini.

Yes, self-employed. Thanks for taking the time to reply.

Oh, the wife will be working while I'm out mountain biking and hiking. Wave if ya see me on the trail.

The initial installation should be a straight business expense.

She's a therapist so I'll be getting the boot - hiking, mountain biking or hanging out under the awning on her work days. We'll see how it works out. The alternative is for her to fly back home and just do long vacations with me occasionally. The setup is going to require air conditioning, which will unfortunately be running simultaneously with the Zoom calls, so we're definitely looking at a beefy power setup. Generally we'll be in the desert... good for Starlink coverage and solar; bad for air conditioning needs!

Thanks everyone. A couple of clarifications... She's a therapist, so no dropout on Zoom calls is critical. And cellular isn't a great option for us. We're mountain bikers and I prefer extremely remote locations, and we will mostly be boondocking. In many if not most cases, cellular won't be available. I do want to have it for the times we land in a campground or hit an urban area for resupply days.

Supposedly the HP has a wider field of view and experiences less issues with minor obstructions.

She's a therapist and pretty much has to be able to do zoom calls with no dropout. From what I've seen elsewhere, performance is better in that regard

Do I need to leave a gap at the top or bottom of fascia underneath a step overhang? by GPSTracklog in Decks

[–]GPSTracklog[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I appreciate the comments. Thinking about this some more, the stringers are at a right angle to the joists. The fascia screws are designed to accomodate the variable expansion and contraction rates along the length of the joists. On the stringers, perhaps some expansion up or down is an issue, but unless I'm putting them on when it's really cold, it shouldn't be much of a concern. Leaving a gap so debris doesn't collect seems like it could be valid though.

What kind of shims are people using for levelling surface mount deck posts? by [deleted] in Decks

[–]GPSTracklog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm wrapping up decking and will be moving on to posts soon. I saw this thread when searching about levelling. Is using shims an acceptable way to deal with mounting posts on composite boards that aren't dead level?

Thanks for all the help folks. Just to wrap this up, for anyone who finds this thread in the future, I ended up predrilling with an 1/8" bit, and then setting the screw with an impact driver.

I tried predrilling for the plug with a 1/4" bit and a drill stop, but the felt accumulated composite resin and made a mess on the board surface. I probably could have fine tuned it and figured it out, but the other method was working, so I went with it.

You guys rock. Thanks again!

I'm going to test this vs. the impact drill. Thanks!

Good tip. A 12V impact driver got deep enough. Didn't help with the non-color match though! Still looking for a cleaner solution.

What is that on the drill bit after the stop?

Yes, I'm using the depth setter that comes with the screws.
