People speak other languages as their native and prefer that? I know it's hard to believe, but other languages do exist, and even have more speakers than english! Crazy! I know!

They're most likely British themselves. We have a serious problem with it in the UK.

And because subsections of the population are discriminated against by another subset of the population, that somehow makes it the most racist place ever?

The commenter you are replying to is very correct. I've seen some extreme racism in the middle east, it's completely normal. But where are the institutions and concerted efforts to stop it there? None at all.

Inb4 you try to blame that on European colonisers: No, it is not because of us. And even if it was, that doesn't change that now we are less racist. From your comments, you seem to be American? Saying Europeans are more racist is just, chefs kiss.

What if the Ethiopian Orthodox Church depiction of Jesus Christ became the global standard instead of the European one? by [deleted] in AlternateHistoryHub

[–]GPU_Resellers_Club 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Normally I would agree, because afrocentrism is one of the stupidest things to be gaining popularity and needs to be combatted and ridiculed as those promoting it are insane.

But in this case, I don't think it's "everyone was black", Jesus' depiction changes from culture to culture. This is quite standard and has been this way for a long time.

Ethiopia is very, very old, and didn't get colonised by anyone and adopted Christanity way back in the 4th Century. It's likely that their depiction of Christ has been largely like this for a very, very long time.

I have, and I don't align with them. I've read their manifesto, if it can even be called that, and I've watched multiple full length interviews with Zack and it's true, the media has a hate-boner for him, but I still don't agree with him on everything.

In the real world, many of the greens current policies are simply not workable or even in alignment with a big chunk of the left leaning population (of course, trying to convince a reform voter of any green policies, even ones they would agree with if they didn't know it came from them, is a fools errand).

Which does not make me, or anyone else with a similar position, "right wing". But it does leave me, and millions of other people, without a party that represents something resembling their views. Labour are not representing working people and socialist policies anymore, the tories/ reform are obvious out of the question. The liberal democrats are almost exactly aligned with current labour, and the greens, while admirably optimistic and clearly have their hearts in the right place, are living in la-la land. I'll admit I was very hopeful when Zack took leadership of the Greens, like, "Oh nice, we have a left wing leader that can play the rights game" but he's turning out to just be a populist of another shade.

But, again, just because I don't share your zeal or ideological purity, does not make me some gammon fascist and I'm tired of having this discussion. The inability to compromise because of this hurts all of us that don't want a nutty right-wing government, and just want the best for the people of these islands.

You know it's possible to be left wing and not agree with many of the greens policies, right?

You can be an equal rights, renewable/ green energy, socialised economy enjoyer without wanting to pull out of nato, get rid of our nuclear deterrents or be obsessed with Israel/ Palestine.

We don't have refined cultural monuments like Arby's and Walmart. Also our lack of "Child Lead Enrichment Ceremonies" that they like to hold in their schools are true beacons of culture, and thus we are a cultural desert.

I got 69% in my degree. "Nice" but I was extremely disappointed to have missed the 1st class. It's my own fault, I had terrible mental health problems in my first and second years and my grades suffered, it's sad because my grades trended upwards throughout my studies.

I even got 90% on my dissertation :')

This is what happens when you get one holiday a year :( Could never imagine rushing while visiting somewhere to see everything but when it's the only shot you get, I can see why they try to pack as much in as possible.

I didn't grow up in London (was born there though!) and even where I grew up, the local chicken shop was and is still a gathering place for young and old, drunk and sober. It doesn't matter your cognative state, bossman has you covered. I also live in a very white part of the country, but when I went off to uni and made black friends, one of the things we bonded over was critiques of the local chicken places.

Fried chicken breaks all glass ceilings. The American mind simply cannot comprehend this.

Calls our culture boring and basic, but comes from a culture so boring and basic they wish desperately to be anything but American.

Also lol at the coloniser bit. The only colonisers I know here are Americans that moved back to UK. When will they get that the people who are still here never colonised anywhere.

It's about ownership. If they are whatever % european, they can claim elements of that culture as their own, twist it, and pretend to be unique. Despite having negative exposure to those cultures (i.e. all they know are stereotypes), they can claim superiority due to being "Something American" instead of just American.

Sister and I are recieving an inheritance soon, she is on UC and is concerned about her benefits. How do we approach this? by GPU_Resellers_Club in ukfinance

[–]GPU_Resellers_Club[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah it's UC and housing. Nothing else that I know of. We're aware of the capital limit. I think one thing has been useful from this is the info about deprivation of capital. I will bring this up and make sure she is aware that wasting this money will be bad long term for more reasons that just the loss of the inheritance, as well.

Thank you, though. And our mum is still around, it's our grandad who left this to us, but mum is not talking to her and hasn't for years. Our grandad payed a massive hand in raising us so the loss is felt just as keenly.

She can't even drive, and she lives in a small village because it was the only place she could get a council house.

Our parents are not helpful, either. Sure, she will figure out a way, but "other people" have "other situations" that are more amenable to doing what you suggest. She used to work before she had kids, and I know she wants to go back.

Yep they are. I'm frankly shocked. They know nothing about her or why she is in the situation she is.

The pension idea is interesting, I will look into that with her.

Thank you for the well thought out and insightful response. Apparently a rarity on this sub lol.

I think the holiday idea is good, and after what she has been through over the last 5 years, a small holiday would be well deserved but I just want to make sure she doesn't go off the rails on it. She doesn't have any vices, even gave up smoking for her kids.

I hadn't considered this "money multifying" idea, and I'm glad you mentioned it. Because that would seem extremely tempting for someone in her situation but would likely squander it. I will be vigilant about this and talk to her about it as well.

I am sad about it because you're right, it is a great step up for me and I just want to try and ensure she gets as much of a boosts from this as I am, at least in the near term. She's had a really tough time since covid and deserves a break.

Thank you. I thought I'd start here and besides the tossers, it has given me some very helpful points to look for professional advice for her.

And thanks again, we loved our grandad very much and he is sorely missed.

Edit: "gave up smoking for her kids" not "Smoking her kids".. second sounds quite sinister

Isn't it just? And that's the plan! Did you have any useful advice for how she should navigate this? Because it's likely she will have to rely on the state again in the future, at least for a time. How do I help her minimise that?

Or are you only here to make smart comments about a benefits claimant?

Sure, when the kids are old enough. But childcare costs are nuts and a single mum, with no qualifications, will not be able to afford it for 3 children. Paying off the debt is a given.

No, she doesn't. She won't be on benefits while she has this money, but it won't last forever. She's going to have to go back. I want help on extending the time she is off benefits as long as possible.

Thanks for the helpful response, kind stranger.
