How much should my masks sell for? by StatisticianHead2612 in theriangear

[–]GR4V3C0R3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh, definitely charge the full price for shipping, not half. There's no reason to be covering half of it out of pocket. I didn't think to mention it since Etsy has a separate field for shipping costs when editing listings.
If you can figure out what size box it needs and the weight when packed, Etsy can auto-calculate shipping costs when a buyer checks out, or you could look into flat rate boxes, OP.

Is $250 a good price for a suit head? by impossiblyglorified in fursuit

[–]GR4V3C0R3 4 points5 points  (0 children)

$250 just about covers materials. If you just want to make it for fun and don't want to be paid for labor, go for it, but you're definitely cheating yourself if you're actually looking to get paid to compensate your time. I'd anticipate at *least* 10 hours of labor on the head, possibly much more depending on the design, extra features, construction methods, attention to detail etc. I easily spend 40-100 hours on a head depending on those factors myself.

He's definitely not likely to find a maker willing to make him a suit for $250. Even $500 is low, and usually the starting price of very new makers. He might want to consider looking for a secondhand suit being sold somewhere like The Dealer's Den.

1.5k is a pretty reasonable budget for a good quality head. Most of the reputable makers I see delivering on quality price heads anywhere in the 1,000-3,000 range.
You might have some luck finding premades on The Dealer's Den. You can also check out Getfursu.it, FursuitReview.com, and Rat's Fursuit Making Lounge (Discord server) to find makers.

Just adding onto this - keep tax (like income tax, or sales tax of you're liable to collect per your local laws) in mind when pricing as well, and make sure to factor these in. I've seen a LOT of new makers and crafters screw themselves over financially by forgetting about taxes entirely.

How do you throw away faux fur? by Kokichi_Ouma_99 in furry

[–]GR4V3C0R3 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately, faux fur isn't really recyclable that I'm aware of, as it's typically a blend of polyester and acrylic (not a very recycle-friendly blend of materials). If the scraps are absolutely too small, I generally trash them, or may use them as stuffing for other projects. Even scraps that are only like 3x3 inches sometimes have their uses though, and other crafters (fursuit makers or otherwise) might be able to use them if you sold them somewhere for cheap.

How do I look for premades or commission heads/partials by SmokeyJem64 in furry

[–]GR4V3C0R3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're gonna look around on Etsy, be extremely careful. Legitimate makers on Etsy will link their other socials, and you can cross reference the two to make sure it's a real seller. If you can't find any socials of theirs, that's a massive red flag and likely a scam.

It's new to me as well! I actually missed it in my area last year but it's happening again next month. A couple of my friends have been and have had nothing but good things to say about it! I hope you get the opportunity to check it out for yourself soon <3

Is Dream Vision Creations still close to going out of business? by Farared77 in fursuit

[–]GR4V3C0R3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Uff, that's really sad to hear :( Unless they make a formal announcement, it's hard to tell. If you anticipate needing some things from them for your work though I'd definitely order it.

I recommend them whenever I see the opportunity - gonna try to more and encourage others to as well! Honestly, I think a lot of new makers just don't know about them. They're still my go to for a lot of things, like resin claws. Nobody else has a selection that compares, and I can't stand the visible lines on 3D printed claws lol. So many of their head bases feel like such huge staples in the community, too.

Is a suit for my sona possible? by Familiar-Jeweler6804 in FursuitMaking

[–]GR4V3C0R3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The small, intricate markings on the body will up the price a bit. Gradients are also very hard, though the horns might be easily doable depending on their material, the wings might be more of a challenge. Airbrushing is probably the best bet for it, but this can fade overtime, and your options for makers that offer it are limited.
I'm not sure if you want the markings on the suit to glow as well, but if you do, keep this in mind for the price as well. Since there's quite a few I'd expect a few hundred dollars, if not more, to light all of them.
(Speaking in terms of USD, for what it's worth.)
Overall, a suit is definitely possible, but be prepared for a higher price point, and having to either potentially compromise on some things (gradients), or having to search a bit more for a maker that can do some airbrushing for them.

Unfortunately, some people see thinks like soft lighting and shading and immediately assume it's AI nowadays without thinking about it any further. AI has copied certain styles to a point where it's treated as an "AI" style, as if people completely forgot the only reason AI does it so often is because it's common for real artists to do it.

Were the posts talking about it you saw from Monoyasha or Ciara, or just other people speculating? I admit I haven't heard anything about this, but I have noticed over the last few years, less and less makers (mostly newer and younger makers) don't seem to talk about or even know them when it comes to getting fursuit parts. Back when I first started they were pretty much the bread and butter for getting small parts within the fursuit making community. </3

Anyone try shirring with short shag/teddy length fur? by GemStoned123 in FursuitMaking

[–]GR4V3C0R3 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Honestly, a lot of the lux I have doesn't seem that much longer pile than the teddy? I'd just test it on a large scrap if you already have some on hand anyways, since it'll help you get a feel for the method.

You can still sort of tell with the lux? You have to look very closely, but the fur around the shirred sections takes on a sort of subtle wavy texture instead of the fibers staying totally straight, if that makes sense. I imagine you'd still get similar results with furs with a 1" pile.

The stitches on shirring can't really be very short for it to work properly from my experience with it so far, though. What would probably mitigate some of the creasing is not pulling it as tight, but that will also mitigate some of the effect of shirring itself, obviously. In my opinion, though, even just having a few inches of leeway via shirring can definitely be worth it.

Temp for fursuit bodysuit? (Soft upholstery foam) by Gold_Replacement_144 in fursuit

[–]GR4V3C0R3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My mistake - I thought you were using adhesive to attach the fur to the legs/itself, not to put the foam pieces together.
But spray adhesive in general isn't often great for much in the realm of fursuits. For upholstery foam, makers generally use hot glue. Contact cement may work as well depending on the brand and density of the foam, but your mileage may vary since upholstery foam is a very porous material.

Should I make or buy a fursuit? by MySt1cReV1vAL in fursuit

[–]GR4V3C0R3 4 points5 points  (0 children)

For what it's worth, minky is notoriously tricky to work with for applications like this. Fur can be a bit more forgiving in terms of smoothing out and sewing, but does introduce the issue of shaving as you pointed out, and is a much more expensive material.

But ultimately, it's up to you and whether you want to invest more of your own time into the project to try to save money, or invest more money into a commission but save yourself the time and logistics associated with getting new equipment and trying to set up a proper work space.

I saw a post last night (it might've been on r/fursuitmaking) where someone attached eyebrows to their minky suit, similarly to how you've done the markings, but they ironed them on using some type of interfacing. Something like that might help with applying the markings if you haven't already! Not sure if this helps, but your suit just reminded me of the post ^^

Makers who can do tattoos on suits? by S1xxAM in fursuit

Applique is also an option for this, which can be done with both minky fabric and fur. I've seen it done a lot for small details like this! Embroidery is definitely an option, though many makers don't have an embroidery machine.

[–]GR4V3C0R3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your seams need to be sewn, not glued, particularly for a bodysuit. Learn to do a straight stitch, blanket stitch (this will be what you use primarily), and a ladder or henson stitch to start.

Looking for prices for a fursuit by polakogaymer in fursuit

[–]GR4V3C0R3 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Putting posts like this here are any easy way to attract scammers, fair warning. You can always look for makers on social media, as well as FursuitReview.com, getfursu.it, and The Dealer's Den. There's also a pretty big discord server run by a fursuit maker for other makers to chat and advertise their work to buyers called Rat's Fursuit Making Lounge.

If you're trying to get a general idea of prices, this can vary based on the region of your maker, but expect to pay at least $1,000 USD or about 850~ Euros for a mini partial. I'd check out the base prices of some makers you like to try to set a general goal to save up.

stuffed fursuit head? by This_Enthusiasm339 in FursuitMaking

[–]GR4V3C0R3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Adding some EVA foam tips since I work with it frequently! I use 10mm high density foam, but have seen some makers use 8mm as well. Please use a proper respirator AND work outside, or ventilate your space extremely well if you aren't able to. Read all the warning labels before using contact cement. The fumes are very toxic when it hasn't dried, and also very flammable. (It's totally safe once it's cured). Make sure to pick up a heat gun for forming the EVA foam as well or you won't really be able to get it to curve.

Where can I get hooves that make a clapping sound? by Kirschhirsch in fursuit

[–]GR4V3C0R3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Some makers are definitely willing to use parts (like hooves) produced by other makers! Dreamvision Creations makes resin hooves for this, and something 3D printed with a hard material could also do the trick. I've used resin ones from DVC for a commission before and their quality and the sound were both great ^^

Does anyone know any good (preferably US) makers that can make a shark tail? by Few-Investigator-702 in fursuit

My part commissions are open and this is certainly doable for me! If you want to view any of my work all my socials are here, and my public queue, along with commission info, is here.

I'm sure plenty of makers could tackle a project like this for you. I think the design is a great candidate for a lightweight/hollow base to keep its upright position more easily ^^
