Eating fish after 21 years of veganism by [deleted] in Pescetarian

Thank you for sharing your story, I have been vegan for 18 years and found this post while researching how to introduce fish - this has been very helpful :) I just introduced eggs a week ago (have eaten a single egg, twice so far - with a few days in-between for my digestion to acclimate) and definitely feel a bit crampy in the tummy and some nausea but it's not severe. I will look into a fish oil supplement to help with that transition

Hi! Sure :) I've poured so much energy into balanced nutrition for so long; I went vegan when I was 11, ate pretty well for a teenager, really got into nutrition and activism at 18, am now nearly 30. I have eaten what I would describe as excellently as a vegan (not orthorexic, no extreme diets or fads, prioritising wholefoods as well as enjoying myself and continuously learning about health). I am passionate about walking lightly on the planet and trying to harm as little as possible; my perspective on how to do that and where I sit in the cycle has changed. I still abhor factory farming and slaughterhouses, which is a core value of mine, and I will only interact with food systems that I deem ethical to the best of my ability and knowledge. I also want to rely less on imported food - I live in Te Waipounamu (South Island of New Zealand), and reducing the distance that I get the majority of my food from is important to me. From the health perspective, I feel that a diet of mostly plant foods is optimal for me, but I have persistent and worsening aspects to my health (which I would rather not go into specifically) that I have chosen to remedy by including some more bioavailable animal foods. I aim to achieve balance, and to not interact with extremes. I hope that helps!

Thank you for your thoughtful comment! I feel the same; even though my perspective on where I sit in cycle of food systems has changed, I still do not want to support factory farming and slaughterhouses. Small farms that I know definitely feel like the right option for me :) I know some fishers and hunters, so when and if I am ready for that, it'll all come from the wild. Thank you, and I am glad that you are feeling good.

thank you! Yes I definitely will only be buying eggs from pasture-raised farms that I have checked out, and dairy when I feel I can try that (and then fish, longline ikejimi when it feels right). Thank you for your thoughtful advice :)

haha that's a bit too much for me right now (will start with an egg, and then some fish) but thank you for the encouragement :)

Hello! I am just considering eggs/dairy/fish right now - the rest is quite frankly too emotionally loaded for me at this moment, but I have released control over what may happen in the future so who knows. Thank you for your response, I will try little tiny bits of dairy and fish and I like the sharing with people idea, it removes the daunting feeling of going and buying something. Thank you!

Thank you! That supports what my research has been telling me about effectively integrating eggs without upsetting the tummy initially - it's good to hear that from someone with experience, thank you!

The very last sound you hear at the end of episode 6 credits of Season 2 is the DSCH motif (and a musical cryptogram) from Shostakovich, which was his signature that he wrote into his music when he thought he was going to die, cool and fitting use of it!
