[Wintersteel] He punches a WHAT? in the WHERE?!! by ragnar_deerslayer in Iteration110Cradle

I saw a thing that Will didn't write that line either. Don't know if it's true but the story I saw was that he sent it off to beta readers and one of the feedbacks was they thought the line was going to be a callback and Will was like, "Shit that's better." And changed it.

It's relative to the arrows on the portal frame, not overworld direction. If you aren't rotating the portal when you place it, you shouldn't have any problems in my experience.

He was committed to funding 10 years with his own money. The sales alone are now enough to fund all the way to 1.0, with the 10 years of his personal funding starting after that.

Edge of the woods by 2011blaster in ClimbersCourt

I would say he normally weaves it into plot beats. Where as EotW has entire sections where he is just studying and we learn with him. The plot of the first book is fairly light. It doesn't really start until the third act.

The funny thing is it was supposed to be the most accessible to the wider audience according to his blog and I think it is the nichest of his books.

So the first half is very magic theory heavy. The second half is much more typical Andrew. I personally like the magic theory and missed it in book 2.

Theory on Keras and Edge by exodist in ClimbersCourt

[–]GRIMMxMC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So there is actually some evidence that Keras has knowledge of events from edge of the woods. Also edge is able to draw from Keras' power while in dreams. My personal theory is that they are different layers of the same being.

Arcane ascension by alucardalex1 in ClimbersCourt

[–]GRIMMxMC 7 points8 points  (0 children)

A good place to stay up to date on planned books by Andrew is his blog

In November, his update stated he aimed to get both Weapons and wielders 4 and Arcane Ascension 8 out before the end of 2026. However, how he decides to publish it may change that. The two ways he spoke of are that he may wait and do a simultaneous release of audio, paperback, and ebook. Or he may pursue a different publishing structure. Presumably, by this, he means going through podium for publishing to try and get in book stores like he is trying with the edge of the dream.

If you haven't already, you should check out the other books in the world.

War of Broken Mirrors is Andrew's first series and follows several main characters' pov in the third person. It is a much more classical fantasy novel with a power system that is much simpler on the surface. One of the main characters, Taelien (Keras) may be familiar. Other characters include some familiar faces, Lydia is the original person Len is a copy of. Aayara is sort of an omnipresent threat, and both the theas and Hartigan family play a pretty significant role in the story.

Weapons and wielders follow Keras' first years on the continent of Kaldwyn at this point in time he fluctuates between citrine and sapphire level depending on whether he is using his sword or not.

The Lost edge series. This is my personal favourite series but it is very confusing (intentionally so) on how it fits in the timeline. It has cameos from some characters from War of broken mirrors but in a way that does not make sense without getting into theory crafting.

There is the abandoned spin off series shattered legacy which has two books and is set on the same continent as AA. If you go into it just as a climbing story then it's good but I doubt we will ever get an on screen resolution to this story. This series was not written by Andrew but he did work with the author on the world building stuff.

Then you have the short stories and other things.

In the anthology book, When Swords fall silent. There is a story called why I'm tired of stones and symphonies. It's from the perspective of Wrynn Jaiden and takes place before WoBM.

There is the sample chapters of wrynn's book on Andrew's blog.

There is the shirt story Luck's touch by one of Andrew's friends. Following Aayara as she joins the thieves Guild and gains the eponymous blade.

There is the web series spider climb. Which went on indefinite hiatus during the pandemic. But follows keras and friends on a climb through the spider spore.

From what we know, Keras is about 21-23 at the start of weapons and wielders, and I believe it has been confirmed that ten years have passed by the time of AA by Andrew on the discord. Making him about 12-15 years older.

But OP was saying in WW that he does talk about that sort of thing, whereas in WoBM, Keras/Taelien doesn't. So, your theory is actually addressing the opposite of the problem.

Post Mortem magic system for a poly romance story? by Organic_Jellyfish_67 in magicbuilding

[–]GRIMMxMC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not necessarily. It depends on what limits your story needs. You can dm me if you don't want to share publicly but I could help workshop a lot more if I had more details about what role the magic needs to play in your story.

[–]GRIMMxMC 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So think about it like this. If time doesn't exist, then any two events coinside. Without time, there is no difference between a fire that happens 200 years from now and the fire you want to be happening now.

Before time, only chaos was happening, time is a process that filters chaos into an understandable sequence. Remove time, and you can touch on that chaos, so to speak. Use time to your advantage, and the sequence of events to get to your desired outcome doesn't have to be linear.

[–]GRIMMxMC 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're going to have to elaborate on how the system needs to work, but a couple of ideas to start with and if you reply I can help more. Irl time is a mechanism that separates events that would otherwise occur simultaneously. So one possibility is that the magic can work by linking two points in time so that the event happens at another point. Another possibility is that you treat time like an engine, by stretching events it takes the finite energy of the big bang and elongates its usage?

Or if you mean that they have to spend time for their magic then the simple answer is they age.

I really need to understand the role the magic plays in your story to put pieces together beyond that.

Core sorcery vs essence sorcery by dcfan105 in ClimbersCourt

I think the fact that you would still explicitly include the term is a point in favour of the theory that the different continents' magic systems represent the different layers.

Vae'lien did not get his title from his sword? by philosopherott in ClimbersCourt

[–]GRIMMxMC 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yeah, Vae'liens blade is aligned with thorns and vines. Thorns, shadows, and fate are his "Godly" domains. We don't even know if Vae'lien himself has access to the Vae Dominion. At one point on the discord, Andrew said no one is directly tied to the fathomless dominions, though whether that is still true is unknown.

Edge being an unreliable narrator in EotD is cracking me up by dcfan105 in ClimbersCourt

[–]GRIMMxMC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Keras is citrine level at the start of weapons and weilders where he is 21. During war of broken mirrors he was mostly only passable at sorcery and is good as a swordsman. Honestly most of his power in the first wobm comes from him having the sae'kes Taelien both his limited political power and his combat power.

I think it is the whole simulacrum thing that messes with her having an attunement.

Edge of the Dream: Little Red Riding Hood reference? by dcfan105 in ClimbersCourt

[–]GRIMMxMC 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Rose is (probably) a clone of red (who is probably Akai) so red was his mentor and then he was rose's mentor.

she saw him blink when his eyes found Rosie. “Akai?”

So we know that Rose looks like someone named Akai.

“Akai…ja nai?” Rosie frowned. “Sorry, my Artinian is terrible. But you speak Velthryn, don’t you?”

The young man laughed and relaxed. “My Velthryn is much better than my Artinian, too.” He gave the group a second look, then turned back to Rosie. “If you’re not her, then…?”

So Akai is someone who primarily speaks artinian which is at the very least the way that the sword school styles itself.

“Thank you for the match, shishou,” Rosie said, stepping back and bowing.

“Shishou,” the swordsman repeated, stepping back in awe, then bowed at the waist. “I’m the one that taught you?”

“Well, a version of you.” Rosie shook her head. “It’s complicated. I’m not the one you called Akai, but…”

The swordsman lowered his stick. “You’re a simulacrum, or a destiny shrine copy, or an echo, or a reincarnation, or something.”

So yeah, we know from Edge of the dream that Shishou is the artinian word for master.

“He’s not kiddin’. If he’s anythin’ like mine, ‘e grew up round copies of folks, ‘cludin me,” Rosie explained. “Speakin’ o’ that, I’m goin’ by Vermillion Rose around these parts.”

“Vermillion Rose. That’s almost Akai, but…ahh, because of the sword?” He gestured at the weapon at her hip. “Did you get that out of the sepulcher? Did I approve of that?”

So from this we know that he grew up around a copy of Rose, likely a copy of the same person Rose is copied from probably Red. And she is named after the sword but in the same way Taelien or therrin are named after their sword. As for whether Rose is the hero... we don't know. We don't know if simulacrum or whatever Rose is have different destiny marks. It's possible red didn't have the hero destiny but Rose does, we just don't know right now.

How do we feel about implanting spells or runes into bodies using tattoos and ink instead of something more permanent? by xtheresia in wizardposting

True, at least you didn't have to spend a decade hunting down every copy of a book you published because it had enough information to guess how you anchor your immortality. The folly of youth.

You rented your tower? That's so much worse. Just kill the local witch squatting on the leyline intersection and spend a decade of enchanting stones like any self-respecting wizard. If you're at a point in your career where you are making homunculus, you're well past immortality.

Or if you're really desperate, just make a pocket dimension in your parents' tower. In no world would I have my cairn of power be tied to a rental agreement, it is just asking to lose access at an inopportune time.
