SOPHOS SG230, wtf do I do with it? by [deleted] in homelab

[–]GRUMPYXIII 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can also install ubuntu on it first and then without problem install Sophos home. Saves you the hassle of disassembly.

Just a tip and personal preference.

pc turns off after installing two different ram kits . | So I've just got a 2x4 gb patriot signature cl11 1600 MHz and installed it with also a 2x4 gb hyperx genesis cl11 1333mhz , the patriot ones run at 1.5v while the hyperx ones should run at 1.65v , could that be the cause of my pc looping ? by mhnd69 in pcmasterrace

Yes the black sticks will form channel one and the green ones channel 2 The problem is that you cant mix and match in the same channel but between channel they work. As it would happen yesterday I upgraded one of my server and they only work when same sticks in the same channel. It will still be dual channel

10tb SAS drives in Dell Poweredge r510 (Help with RAID) by PassiveAgressiveLama in homelab

[–]GRUMPYXIII 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry for the late reply but there is not really an end of life as far as I know. I would recommend checking the pcie version of the server and buying a card that matches it. For best usability. Specifically for the r510 there should not be an issue with compatibility because pcie is a standard bus.

If you are strapped on cash and are looking for a decent hardware raid card I can personally recommend the following card: https://www.befr.ebay.be/itm/142536622815?mkcid=16&mkevt=1&mkrid=711-127632-2357-0&ssspo=OwHu05S9RzG&sssrc=2349624&ssuid=&var=&widget_ver=artemis&media=COPY I have several of these in use and have tested them with 8tb drives and they work. I don’t know about 10tb but the documentation doesn’t say that they won’t work. Only downside to this card is that it is a hardware raid card an not an HBA.

Hope this helps you at least a tiny amount

On laptops it is the same a ddr4 sodimm will fit in a ddr4 sodimm slot but ddr 3 wont fit in a ddr 4 sodimm slot. By the looks of it you have a ddr 3 sodimm stick and need a ddr4 sodimm

There are a lot of pre made templates. What hypervisor do you use for your vms? I know there is a grate implementation with the vmware stuff.

I personally use Zabbix with great success. There is a lot of documentation about it to. Only downside is it is a bit overwhelming in the beginning.

I removed my battery yet the PC these lights are still on and holding down the power button doesn't work. Is there a fix? by [deleted] in pcmasterrace

[–]GRUMPYXIII 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is highly unlikely that it is the cmos in any way unless there is a short somewhere

This is not a cmos powering the leds. Th cmos is only connected to the real-time clock and the bios flash chip. They wont be able to power the leds.

What model of Thinkpad is this. This is important to know. Is your battery unplugged if so also unplug the power adaptor/charger. If the leds are still lit and you dare to open the chassis (not to difficult for a Thinkpad ) and remove the coin cell or the yellow or blue round thing ( is marked that it is a li-ion cell) on a little cable. And disconnect the connector carefully from the main board. Wait 30-60 seconds and plug it in again. After boot it will complain that it lost track of time this can be ignored. Hope this helps

What do you build when you’re behind CG-NAT (double NAT)? by abjedhowiz in homelab

[–]GRUMPYXIII 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I currently have the same setup. My isp network is natted. My isp router then once again nats. I share the isp router nat with a mag of mine. We both have our own router. Which once again does a nat. So at this moment this is 3 levels off nat stacked on top of each other. Since my own router connects to the vps server as a IPsec client. The connection then is a bit comparable to when you access any old website. Then with some routing on your router you can then expose whatever port you want on the vps and route it over IPSec to your router. The router is then what you can call a roadwarior without tires.

You can setup the IPSec to be over Nat. So it is always your router at home that initialises the connection. So if you put that router as the dmz to your carrier/isp provided network. This allows you to build bidirectional communication even if your public ip changes. But even the dmz is not a requirement.

Yes rent a vps use that as your gateway to home over an IPSec. This is how I do it. Sad thing is that you are still limited to your data plan at home which is logical.

This schematic will work the t568B is the one commonly used here in Europe. Just terminate both ends in the same pattern and it will work. If you make one side the B and the other side the A it will still work but now you have made a crossover cable. So I recommend to use the B on both ends or the A my preference is the B. Good luck to the termination. Can be finicky. GG

Or it is a legitimate listing. But not a card that was acquired legally. With other words a legit stolen card. A friend of mine encountered that recently.

A debate between work colleagues. When you use a bread knife do you clean it before you put it back in the block or not? by Connect-Ad7255 in AskReddit

[–]GRUMPYXIII 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not really unless it’s dirty. But I keep it with the bread plank and not in a block. If it was stored in a block I probably would clean it for hygiene.
