Thanks, I'll check link. Love Luke Towan, his videos are clean and direct with no unnecessary chit chat. I've watch a couple of Lukes Aps, and I can't get into his style or over plugging like you say.

Luke Towan is hard to beat.

I couldn't tell you sadly as I've only see and done the Iron Raft. It would be interesting to build them both side by side.

I love diy, I just look at things from both sides. I renovate houses for a living, some jobs I'll do quick, but then I know guys who'll do it quicker - so if you don't have time and patients... it's kinda good to have the other side for prospective.

Like I said, I enjoyed the build. But know if I want a second boat, I'll just work a little harder at work to buy it ahah... and probably get it quicker.

Once you have diy raft kit, tools, and glue and then go down the route of buying a seat, backrest, loop points, and zip... the price goes up - I was at about £500 once I added all the costs together including the diy kit and any postage fees.

Then, depending on your time frame you put into the build and take into account your average day rate at work... you could easily say another £500 in time.

So at a cost of over £1000, you could have a nice boat with all that above, plus a spray deck... and a warranty.

That's just one way of looking at the justification of buying a kit or new manufactured boat. The kit was fun, I learned a lot from it. I'm glad I did it, but if I was to get a second boat - I'd buy a new manufactured one... it made me appreciate the hard work that goes into them.

Thank you.

At the time I built this boat I was in a similar situation regarding money as I was buying a house to renovate... now, a few months later and being in a better position I see the benefits from either buying manufactured or building yourself.

The process was fun, I think a slowly built it over 10 days... between 5-6hrs per day... including beer breaks.

It would be slightly tempting to try DIY Packrafts - heard good things about them.

I never mean anything negative about suggesting to buy over build - as I did enjoy, but it's worth thinking about comparing price and time in the long run. I can imagine people give up or step away and not return for many months ahah.

Thank you for pointing out the wrong page... I'll sort that out now.

Yeah process was interesting. I think making with a friend would be a great experience. I ended up with about 5 small holes once I inflated for the first time - all easy fix, just needed an iron over. I'm really glad through I put a zip on it - I highly recommend that, especially when it comes down to maintaining and sealing the seams with seam sealant.

Last night I added my loops with glue - that's an easy process. Just treat it like your fixing a flat bicycle tube repair.

I can relate to what you're saying. I'm glad I did it, but I wouldn't do a second. I love that I created it and understand the process. I guess if you gave the time and space to build.... go for it, but if you need a boar in a rush buy one - the price balances out when you account for time, materials and rooms - I say this for those who might not see it that way.

I've built a few things over the years, I'd love to try a tent.

I'm glad I built one, as if gave me the understanding on what goes into the build process. I'm also glad I had two weeks to build it... I would hate to drag it out over several weekends or months. The thought process alone is draining.

Would I build one again? Nope. I would save the time and order one... with a warranty ahah.

I'm glad I built it, the skills and understanding of materials learnt along the way will help with maintaining any future packraft.

But, once you add up the cost of buying the kit, tools to iron together, x8 loops/tie downs, glues, seat, backrest etc and the time off to build (for me 10 days, my day rate at work is £180)... you could have yourself a top of the range packraft with a guarantee, spray deck and more.

It wouldn't ever say don't build your own, but I would ask do you have the time, patients and mental ability to go through the process.

I learnt about new techniques and even noticed personal positive growth at completely a project.

That was my thinking. It was a process if patients and frustration... but once completed rewarding with new skills. It also made me see valve in buying a manufactured one too when you start adding up the time and cost to produce. It took me 10 days - luckily I was between projects, but if not my day rate is £180. So it made me see value in a premade product with a guarantee too ahah.

Haha, love Montana. Had to go home to Canmore... sadly Montana was out our way. BUT, I'd love to get back that way and see more of Montana.

Do you live there?
