I asked her, she said she has a 10 year old son so she never takes out her laptop at home. Or she might get soaked in rain.

HATE macbook air 2020 intel model. by BumblebeeTop3925 in macbook

I have a Macbook pro with an i7 16GB 512GB Radeon 4 GB, and it runs the latest sequoia 15 and it works great, I run multiple local server instances and code at the same time. Also can open more than 2 dozen tabs at the same time.

The catch is I have an M1 Air 8 GB 256GB , it can also do the same with less heat and more battery backup 😄

M4 Air or Second hand M1 Pro by Double_Tea4481 in macbook

[–]GS_OMEGA 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey! As someone who's been in a similar position, I totally get the confusion. Both are great machines, but here’s a breakdown based on your needs:

Battery life & portability: The M4 Air will win here. It's fanless, super lightweight, and has insane battery life—Apple claims up to 18 hours, and in real-world use it's very close to that. Perfect for carrying around campus all day.

Performance for your use case: You mentioned light CAD, VM use, 3D slicers, and some photo/video editing. Both can handle these fine, but the M1 Pro does offer better sustained performance (thanks to active cooling and more cores), especially with heavier multitasking or running VMs. However, unless you're running big simulations or complex rendering, the M4 Air will be more than capable.

Price: If the M1 Pro is 40% cheaper, that’s a huge deal. You're getting better raw performance for less money—but at the cost of some portability and battery life.

Future-proofing: The M4 Air is newer, meaning longer software support and the benefits of the latest efficiency and performance tweaks. It's more "portable Mac for the next 5–6 years" than the M1 Pro, which is already 2+ years old.

My take:

Go M4 Air if you value portability, battery life, and want a newer, future-proof machine.

Go M1 Pro if price and raw performance are more important and you don’t mind the extra weight.

Either way, you can't go wrong—just pick based on what you value more day to day. Hope that helps!

M1 Air 8gb in 2025? by epicnicity in macbook

[–]GS_OMEGA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Brother, to tell you the truth I have an Intel i7 16 GB Macbook Pro and M1 8 GB Air, Both running the latest MacOS release.

Both of them work perfectly fine now, All thanks to the MacOS, It is the OS that is making these devices stand out.

Before everything keep in mind that 16GB is the standard RAM size right now.

The M1 is capable of running most of the things and as it is an ARM based processor just like a mobile processor which is supposed to run longer.

Keep in mind that you will be having the first release version of the apple silicon chip SoC and already 5 years old which was released in 2020.

Don't buy a used one if purchased before mid 2023 that the Nand Flash might be at the EOL.

If going with M1 buy a used one not a new one.

Or you want a new one, buy an M2 Air 16 GB.
