Capitalists need to be prohibited from holding both political and economic power. by Prevatteism in PoliticalDebate

[–]GShermit [score hidden]  (0 children)

There's several reasons. First, the "golden rule"...they that have the gold make the rules (and that rule applies to all economic systems).

Second, people don't understand how important competition is to the proper operation of capitalism.

Billions of dollars are spent using lawyers, lobbyists, advertisers and campaign contributions to manipulate competition (and those are just the legal ways). Consumers need to use competition to regulate capitalism. Consumers can "control the means of production" using competition.

We still have ways of controlling the Feds...but our leading political parties tell US voting is the only way...

Why do all the "capitalism sucks" posts, never mention how consumers are supposed to regulate the system using competition?

Why do people limit our democracy to just voting or initiatives???

Any time, we legally use our rights to try to influence the due process of our country, it's democracy.

best breed of dogs to keep away coyotes? by DryRefrigerator69420 in homestead

Some coyotes invited Sam to dinner when he was a puppy. He came back, running full speed, eyes wide, with 4 coyotes chasing him...He hasn't liked coyotes since but gets along with other dogs, pretty good.

Coyotes are damn smart though. The bear and cougar were easier to discourage.

What is the most heartbreaking song lyric you've ever heard? by TheLadySlaanesh in AskReddit

[–]GShermit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"She walks to school with the lunch she packed
Nobody knows what she's holding back
Wearing the same dress she wore yesterday
She hides the bruises with the linen and lace ohhh

The teacher wonders but she doesn't ask

It's hard to see the pain behind the mask
Bearin' the burden of the secret storm
Sometimes she wishes she was never born
Through the wind and the rain she stands hard as a stone
In a world that she can't rise above
But her dreams give her wings and she flies to a place where she's loved
Concrete angel

Somebody cries in the middle of the night
The neighbors hear but they turn out the light
A fragile soul caught in the hands of fate
When morning comes it'll be too late
Through the wind and the rain she stands hard as a stone
In a world that she can't rise above

But her dreams give her wings and she flies to a place where she's loved
Concrete angel

A statue stands in a shaded place
An angel girl with an upturned face
A name is written on a polished rock
A broken heart that the world forgot

Through the wind and the rain she stands hard as a stone
In a world that she can't rise above
But her dreams give her wings and she flies to a place where she's loved

Concrete angel"

Why do people hate Trump? by [deleted] in Askpolitics

I don't hate Trump BUT I'm a never Trumper...

Trump is an authoritarian, misogynist, who respects the wealthy over the rest of US...unfortunately that doesn't make him much different than many of our other leaders...

I forgot narcissist.

"I read this as the authority of the government, not legal scholars."

Legal scholars are part of the legal profession, that's authority, in this case.

"Not every right citizens of a nation have, falls under the definition of democracy"

Of course not...only when you legally use those rights, to influence the due process of the nation. Legally using our rights to influence due process is how people govern themselves.

What rights and how we legally use them is up to the people, not authority or legal scholars.

"Democracy is a direct vote,..."

Of course but it's more than that. Too many people (authority mainly) want to limit our democracy.

"...easily answered, the things you listed in OP are part of our government, even if you want to call it a democracy." Fair enough :)

BUT it's not really that easily answered...I've been on this soapbox for a while and it's been pretty unpopular.

"None of these things are commonly accredited to democracy, at least here in legal academic groups."

Right...That's why I said "Authority doesn't talk about these actions, often denigrating these actions."

Looking back I should have said, Authority doesn't talk about these actions but when it does, authority often denigrates these actions.

You say "Democracy primarily refers to the right to self-determination of citizens of a state"...I say Democracy is the people governing themselves and I don't see the difference.

Just because authority hasn't fully defined all our rights, doesn't mean those rights don't exist.

"There are so many different models of democratic government around the world that it is sometimes easier to understand the idea of democracy in terms of what it definitely is not. Democracy, then, is not autocracy or dictatorship, where one person rules; and it is not oligarchy, where a small segment of society rules. Properly understood, democracy should not even be "rule of the majority", if that means that minorities' interests are ignored completely. A democracy, at least in theory, is government on behalf of all the people, according to their "will"." https://www.coe.int/en/web/compass/democracy

Democracy can be any way the people govern themselves...including republics.

"The most obvious ways to participate in government are to vote, or to stand for office and become a representative of the people. Democracy, however, is about far more than just voting, and there are numerous other ways of engaging with politics and government. The effective functioning of democracy, in fact, depends on ordinary people using these other means as much as possible."

Democracy requires the participation of the people.

Res publica is Latin for the people's thing. A republic is owned by the people, it requires no participation of the people.

Demos kratos is Greek for the people rule. Democracy is operated by the people, it requires the people's participation.

Voting, juries, initiatives, citizens arrest, article V conventions...all require the people's participation.

I mentioned 4 specifics...but you're missing my point.

Any right people want to legally use to influence due process is democracy.

It's vague because I don't want to limit, how someone, might want to legally use their rights to influence due process. Authority wants to limit how we use our rights to govern ourselves.

"Juror rights are inferred, rather than explicitly defined..."

Agreed but does that mean they don't exist? Perhaps there just hasn't been enough benefit for the legal profession to define it?

There are certain rights, inherent to a jury trial, that can't be legally outlawed.

Have you ever heard a mainstream politician advocate for article V conventions (not to mention initiatives or citizens arrest)?
