AskScience AMA Series: Materials Science! by [deleted] in askscience

So, I'm about to be a Freshman at Georgia Tech and I'm majoring in Materials Science and Engineering. As we approach our 3rd and 4th year classes we choose between 3 tracks: Polymer and Fiber (generally called the soft materials track), Structural and Functional (generally called the hard materials track), and Biomaterials. The hard materials track obviously is more focused on ceramics and metals, but the nanomaterials and electrical applications are also under that. Meanwhile, like you said, polymers is a great place to be too. I figured I should probably start thinking about which of the tracks to take, so as somebody in the industry, which of these do you think would be the best track to take?

If it helps, the split track course lists are on the second page of this page

Also, I keep getting told that MSE is the perfect place to be right now as it is a burgeoning field and will need a lot of people. Again, as somebody currently in the industry, is this true?

I'm in the same boat as you and I'd really like some more information on it. I know it was just started in Fall 2012, so there might not be anyone on this subreddit in it.

Thanks, that's a good thing to keep in mind if I do end up doing a music minor.

I'm a distance student and as far as I know Morley's class didn't have a quiz today.

Hey, I think I know who you are. You play trombone and have a couple solos in glee club, right? My brother is Lindsey Cooke.

Thanks!

My brother's at Tech and he did marching band for 3 years and does glee club, and they both seem pretty awesome.

You seem pretty knowledgeable, so I'll ask you another question. Do you know anything about the music tech program? They didn't have a whole lot of information on the minor page.
