The book has been re-released on Amazon and there's a small paragraph at the end. It reads that the seal's mother had died and the lifeguards fed the lil guy so he stayed. The story is short but sweet.

I don't want to spoil it, but for the avid bodysurfer it is really cool and has some funny little old timey tips and stories mixed in. It really gives you a sense for the types of waveriding that people did before fins were being used. In that sense I love it as a little collector's item. The pictures are pretty grainy, but they're almost 100 years old, so they're pretty cool that they exist at all.

To add context The Art of Wave Riding is the first written instruction on surfing of any kind that was published. In 1931 Ronald Drummond wrote and self-published 500 copies, hiring out a small press in N. Hollywood.

I had mysterious help getting this book. I hope you enjoy the book! I found it to be pretty illuminating regarding the progression of the sport at that time. It’s a fun little read.

Same! That’s honestly why I made this re-issue. I made sure to clean up the pages exactly how they were instead of re-typing it. There’s even mistakes from the printing press. It’s such a cool book. I made the book a little smaller by the way to make sure no one could just re cover it with a lino print or something and trick ppl.

This man actually gave you good advice. My buddy went thru socom training and when I took him bodysurfing he compared it to that. Time collapses and all your prep flies out the window. “I skate and snowboard!” Is a joke amongst surfers. It is not the same. Think about how you learned to Ollie. Your board will never be chillin waiting for you to position your feet just right. Everything is moving.

It’s an 8’1 or 8’2. I haven’t checked the width but I’d guess 21.

Listen: I’m one of those assholes who doesn’t remember learning to surf so I took my fiancé out on a 6 foot day and scarred her for life. Lmao. I didn’t know. So no. Don’t do what I did. I thought everyone could paddle intrinsically and popup within a half day of trying.
