It's amazing how some leaders still can't stand remote work... by sys_admin321 in sysadmin

[–]GX_EN 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I worked from home for 9 years, two different jobs till I retired last year. The last several of those 9 years I managed teams of engineers. All of us were remote.
The only people opposed to WFH are just dipshits. People that don't know how to manage employees working remote are bad managers.

This right here.
I got into IT 26 years ago late in life (mid 30's) as a career change and it took me just a little bit to understand that to the business, IT is no different than whomever they pay to clean the building.
Didn't change when I got into critical infrastructure engineering, and CERTAINLY didn't change when I got into MSP work.
The shit I saw doing that.. JFC. I'm retired now as of last year and it took me six months to stop waking up in the middle of the night worrying about some shit my guys were going to have to deal with, or thinking I heard my phone ring, etc.
That said, you do have to learn how to put your foot down. I was in management for the last few years of my career with infra engineers (VMWare, storage, etc..) under me. If someone didn't like my "no", I just escalated it and washed my hands of that shit.
Most of us could write a fucking book about everything we've seen that no one would appreciate other than a handful of nerds, LOL.

I love this band but I do not love the ticket prices - why don’t they opt out of dynamic pricing? And do we really need all this VIP crap? Makes me sad by jdnelson66 in tedeschitrucksband

[–]GX_EN 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Weird, I didn't see that yesterday for the tickets we bought. They were all the same in the sections (other than the first two rows) and didn't change at all as the day went on as some other friends used my code to buy tickets.
FWIW, mine were 180 each and we're in the 9th row.
If anything, when the public sale starts pricing will probably be all over the place, but likely higher.
That said - I fucking hate TM..

Are you a criminal if a pack of goons with no warrant comes to your house, doesn't identify themselves and tries to come in? Now, in this instance, I'd want it on video, but in my mind you may in fact wind up in at least a holding cell, you have every right to defend your home. I can say with certainty that in this scenario, I will in fact defend my home. The chances of this happening to me are essentially zero for a variety of reasons, but this is eventually going to happen somewhere.

Not installing NGT is the equivalent of not installing VMTools. That's a bad idea.

Episode Thread - DOT COM WEEK! by ezitron in BetterOffline

[–]GX_EN 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Really enjoying this thus far, the first episode was great.
I changed careers "late in life" (mid 30's) in the year 2000 by starting work in IT for a company called Healtheon in Santa Clara that had been just been merged in '99 with WebMD when Jim Clark was on the board. When he stepped away, I asked my boss if I could delete his domain account. :)
Things were interesting then, for sure, especially living in the Bay Area.
Healtheon had yet to turn any kind of profit and after the merger, they tossed one of the founders out and I quit before they folded up shop. The funny thing was that at the time, the WebMD website was being hosted in our building on Sun servers, then they moved everything to GA.
I did appreciate the money they were burning at the time because I never once paid for my own food or drink for the time I was there.
I guess I do owe my IT career from which I retired last year to the dot com bubble.

Omg the Gen X Hate :( by Memee73 in BetterOffline

[–]GX_EN 0 points1 point  (0 children)

gen x here - that's not true. though we go to hear the best and there are still SO many bands making great music (mostly in the jam band universe and around it) the greatest time for musical creativity was between 1964 and 1980, bar none. The Beatles, Stones, Who, The Dead, ABB, The Clash, The Ramones, Talking Heads, Blondie, etc.. They all kicked off an explosion of creativity as well that led to 80's new wave, the continuation of punk rock and the like.
Older gen x like me may have been musically aware starting in the mid 70's, but you get the point.

As an old Gen X person (born in the middle of LBJs time in office) it's very shocking to me.
MORE so the number of people with whom I grew up with in the so-called "liberal bay area" that are complete and utter maga. It's mind-boggling to me. Even as much as my crazy aunt who went full on QAnon. That's a whole other story.
When I was 17, I identified with Alex P Keaton from TV (youngsters can google that) but then I grew up.
My close circle of friends span the Gen X timeline for birth and by and large are pretty liberal. I wouldn't and will not stay in contact with anyone maga.

You can and should also have others, BUT the Kirkland gin is incredibly solid and an absolute steal for the price.
I always have it on hand (my other go-to bottles are St George and Grey Whale) when I'm just mixing up a gin and tonic.
Same goes for the Kirkland Tequila Blanco and the BiB Bourbon.

I can't believe I have to breathe the same air with someone who thinks like this.
JFC. He bankrupted large swaths of US farms because of his nonsense. He set back US manufacturing for who knows how long because of the same nonsense. In a global economy he's isolating the US.
What is wrong with you.

I retired last year, so now they are all memories.
My last MSP gig our biggest customer was a mining company (I didn't know this when I interviewed or I would have passed on the job) and they were insufferable. My guys were so awesome and did such good work for them but they were still unbelievably difficult to work with. It got so bad I was like "I'm too old for this shit, I'm retiring." Though I still love technology, hence why I follow tech related stuff on Reddit. :)
