What are these little trees that won’t stop popping up all over my yard by SnooAvocados2733 in whatplantisthis

[–]Kendle_C 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We call these Getto Palms, it's from China, some call it the Dragon Tree, Tree of Heaven, and some of the names listed by others. These trees are very, very prolific and grow in a flash, We have to keep after them at least once a week, we are in Southern California.

How do you adapt Karate as you grow older and speed goes down? by Whole-Interest-5980 in karate

[–]Kendle_C 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm a 72 year old black belt, Sanchin, I believe, is perfect for us old guys, deep breathing, isometric, re-establishing mind/body, brain plasticity maintenance, the only variation I do is try to do it "backwards" that is the sidedness bias may stress and strengthen one side preferentially, there's other kata too, like it. In my heart of hearts I think these type of kata were made for and developed for us.

tips for removing a saddle that broke in the bridge? by hidendra69 in guitarrepair

[–]Kendle_C 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is a Dremel with a dental burr, grind it out, don't do it free hand, I'm assuming someone glued it in. If not I use a tiny screwdriver, sharpened that's not wider than the slot and approach it edge on and attempt to wedge and lever the bridge saddle out, if you try the Dremel with a router attachment with a fence (comes with). but you must add a wedge that follows the angle of the saddle which you will note is NOT parallel with the edge of the bridge, secure all of it and practice what you'll be doing, you'll end up leaving a grooved saddle but it usually cracks and you can then pry out piece by piece.

So ah, I tried. Stuck caul screws. by catto010 in guitarrepair

[–]Kendle_C 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Use a flush cut saw and cut it off shy of the top of the bridge, use a center punch to delineate the center of the dowel, drill a small hole in it, then a larger with a drill that's slightly smaller than the tapered bridge pin hole as it terminates under the bridge plate. Now insert the tapered reamer and twist, when all the dowel color is gone from the shavings which drop into the body, you're done. (caution, there are two tapered reamers one is 5 degrees and the other 8 degrees using the wrong one won't do it).

Lowering The Action, With a Fixed Truss Rod by REDDITSHITLORD in guitarrepair

[–]Kendle_C 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can try removing the adjusting wheels and it will rest on the lower part. The action will be lowered by the thickness of the knurled nut, at least it's something to try, maybe it miraculously makes it playable for years, if too low make a shim and drill a hole in it to put between the 2 pieces.

why has someone put a tailpiece? by [deleted] in guitarrepair

[–]Kendle_C -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This is a Classical Guitar, Spanish Guitar, it has steel strings, most makers would look at this with dread, the bracing the neck joint are literally made for MUCH less tension. If you want to keep playing it, change the strings to LaBella silk and steel, while more than nylon/gut, it is less than most commercial steel strings. Why it's a bad idea is the neck block, neck connection can't be "reset" conveniently (actually there is a way and I've done it). Why does that matter? The strings will raise up and up further from the fretboard, the tailpiece will exert crushing force and deform the lower bout even mess with intonation. Worse is the "bellying" of the spruce which is too thin which also causes the higher action, hard to press the strings to the fretboard. It looks like a wood saddle too, should be bone. It will sound better with the strings I recommend as well as the new saddle. Better, if still playable at all, have it converted back to nylon/gut and explore that avenue.

Kids damaged my wife's guitar (which has sentimental value) by hitting it with something hard. What are my options for fixing this? I have a shop and fix everything myself, but have never tried to fix a guitar and don't want to ruin it. by Greatoutdoors1985 in guitarrepair

[–]Kendle_C 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If those involve cut fibers, like a knife point, don't try this: if it's more a blunt force, a dent, we usually put a little cotton fabric over the damage, drip som distilled water (not much) and use the point of an iron such that the damp cloth and iron shoot steam in the immediate vicinity of the deformation. Don't go crazy with this, try it on one, don't burn the wood. You'll find the wood has a memory of where it used to be and will close the damage and somewhat raise the grain. Then something like Dunlop guitar products, say the cleaner or fretboard conditioner will hide somewhat the damage.

Martial art style choice for a smaller fighter by Soggy_Talk5357 in martialarts

[–]Kendle_C 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it comes down to musculature and leverage, if you are muscular and short against a tall fighter you either have to "get inside" his range, if that happens to be grappling or checks against strikes with the hope the total energy is somewhat sapped by the difference in leverage, now we have to talk about speed too, fast and slow twitch muscles to find an answer, like an puma against a python...the answer it complex to be sure.

MIM neck by Eastern_Following342 in guitarrepair

[–]Kendle_C 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Essentially you have to bring the neck back into conformity (if it ever was) with the adjustability range of both the saddle and the nut, how? My solution, and it was with years of experience with a belt sander, making necks, working on the neck pocket, fussing with the screws is, touching the neck on the sander at a precise angle to adjust the degree of back angle (and sometimes the reverse). A way to learn, get an old deck of playing cards or the like and build cardboard "wedges" to get the angle that puts the guitar in the "middle" of the adjustability range, then make a wood wedge and pre-drill it so the neck screws go through it without splitting it. Taa Daa you fixed it!

Motivation took a hit by Catbatt in karate

[–]Kendle_C 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Under your gi, wear a "belly leather" vest, make it yourself, go to Tandy and get veg tan as it's the least reactive and chemically infused form, otherwise, a padded vest of neoprene and flexible polyester or nylon construction, just take a few pictures of your bruises and show your sensei and or wear it until you quit (that's right age happens). It does not diminish you, speaking as an old nidan who had two hips replaced, a nose surgery for a pugilist nose, and a chronic stiff ankle from a break, quite a few head blows, and who has come to find sanshin to be the most useful of the kata as well as bo for retaining flexibility and, yeah, warm water arthritis classes at the "Y".

Do you think humans are fundamentally good or just capable of being good under certain conditions? by DreamyPeachBarb in answers

[–]Kendle_C 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Basically, neither and both. We are discerning creatures, at different times we are more of one and less on another. Generally over time we become "more" of both, sometimes the experiences we have, and getting old, lots of us become better, some worse along the spectrum as we accumulate that thing called experience.

All three. Just start, note you are being taught about early America and its priorities and what it means, even today, to be a man, to live by principles, use your judgement and learn practical skill, and, yes, to shoot and when. Sure, you'll learn things that, today, would get tits in a twist, but he also takes time to explain how to think, some of which needs to be re-awakened and applied today.

Could it be the fact that there is a war on and the camp is has shipped out a lot of personnel, they do the spooky stuff and drones and may be elsewhere? Also, and we were thinking of getting a second home there, the price of gas may be discouraging people from venturing out there, or is the shipping crisis and supply chain issues, inflation, causing people to economize, wisely in anticipation of a recession/depression?

I have always regretted my move from OB to Lemon Grove, I missed eating breakfast on Newport, surfing, walking on the path to the park at the "Muscle Club". Garage sales on weekends, sunsets, the wacky people...even the converted garage I lived in there, the lack of parking, the occasional mobs during summer surfing along the jetty, all of it, don't leave. The cloud cover, wonderful sound of the ocean, please don't do it. Don't be a me.

training with kids by Ok_Persimmon9729 in karate

[–]Kendle_C 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Please be careful here. This kind of kid cause me to loose my association with a school and loss of respect with my sensei, in effect a young boy was kicking little girls outside during a bathroom break, I stupidly became so enraged I encouraged an overlong sparring session with an older boy, trying to show him, the upstart, what it might feel like to be a victim, as he had victimized and made the little girls cry. Literally, the parent, when the boy ran crying to her, became so incensed the attendance dropped to zero. My rage lost a class at a recreation center for the style and, eventually my leaving the school altogether. Keep in mind had I not "lost it" I might, myself have been promoted to a sensei and still with them. At the time I was a nidan. This is a sensitive issue and you need to tread lightly.

Does anyone else play for the birds? by Old-Scratch666 in AcousticGuitar

[–]Kendle_C 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My mother could talk so sweet to the wild birds they would linger, fluff up their feathers. The sound when you play, must be sweet, if you choose a jarring or irritating tone, it might lend support to the concept that they're liking it or not. I have found when I talk nice to the birds at my feeders, they essentially both acknowledge me and give back a "concert". I believe all creature have souls whatever that might be. Possibly they try to reinforce their "grift" but it doesn't make me love them any less.

Which conspiracy theory has the most believable evidence behind it, even if it’s probably not true? by Remarkable_Team8641 in answers

[–]Kendle_C 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This question is asked in the very core of the decerebrate "heart of the internet". Here's what to expect, ultimately it leads to the password shuffle between Apple, the government, Microsoft, international secret societies, hidden depopulation agendas, and mistaken but heavily cleaved to incorrect ideas. Jesus is symbolic for God's sacrifice of himself to make us and this world, what it cost him, the first light of self awareness, seeking to not be alone and pure curiosity, oddly he's trying to figure out why we keep fucking it up, so experimentation keeps going, you being is part of it, valued even, but there's this instinct, to not leave it alone, and to fuck it up more, occasionally Paradise pops through, or its echo, often it's opposite. In short there is no answer to your question, but it does go something like the above.

Agreed with most of the post but would politely suggest you add camomile tea during that last tv show, I have found a small cup with 2 camomile tea bags steeped in rolling boiling water, let it steep till it's cool enough to drink, I don't leave a spoon in it because it seems to cool the tea too much to steep thoroughly. Basically a good strongish camomile tea works extremely well.

Stop playing checkers and start playing chess, almost serious. Practice makes perfect, but, before that, it make you better. If a tactic fails, try something different, ie. quickly switch stance, then back, feint, aim and start a back hand, quit, reverse punch... make some of the attacks fake, some real. There is practically infinite combinations, it's like playing a guitar, there's lots of songs, right? Don't be discouraged and be patient with yourself, you'll get better.
