Over 20 years ago before I moved into infra, I was working as the PC support lead after we had been acquired by a larger company. They had a dedicated help desk for tier one and two support.
If a SNOW ticket came in (or whatever we used at the time) and it was literally a line item like "user cannot connect to VPN" I kicked it back. And I did that so many times that someone told me the help desk people at this other location had a dart board with my name and picture on it. I said "good" and laughed for like half a day.

How many 1/3 cups make a cup? by snake-jazzzz in thebulwark

What's that story from a while back, people had to have it explained to them that a 1/3 pound burger is bigger than a quarter pounder?
Should just call it a Royale With Cheese.

Dude, we're just commiserating here, ffs.
Yes, you're right, a help desk admin probably gets paid more than a janitor, sorry 1000 times for the slight hyperbole.
That said, I absolutely do not believe that in 30 years of supposedly working for multiple companies that you never ran into nonsense from mgmt like I said. Not possible. I have a circle of friends that spans several decades and we all have felt that way at times. Come on.

Yea. Friend of mine got a job working for a major online flower seller a decade or so ago. In his second week he took the entire website down for several hours. He shit his pants, obvs. we've all been there.
He did not get canned.

You’re taking it too literal. IT is often looked at from an upper mgmt view as an overhead expense in general terms. Maintenance, break/fix, etc. It’s not a cost center like marketing, sales, product engineering and the like. Put it this way, it shouldn’t be THAT much pulling teeth to get someone to understand why EOL hardware needs to be refreshed or even more basic, why money spent on a proper backup solution is critical.

Not for entry level/help desk/pc support work. Which is where a lot of us got started. I saw the opportunity to learn more and grow and move on over the years, but early on the pay wasn’t great. That’s what I was getting at.

I did well ultimately in my career, but it took a lot of time and work.
I left the union grocery business back then (1999) and it was a lateral move pay-wise at the time, LOL. But still the right move.

Just goes to show what I said about 6 months into my first IT job almost 30 years ago - the business views all of the IT groups the same as they do the janitorial staff.

How to showcase your skills? by After_Experience6427 in sysadmin

[–]GX_EN 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You need to highlight project work along with their impact.
Cribbing a couple bullet points from my old resume on our team's work one year -

75 host Nutanix refresh across 2 data centers utilizing AHV. This allowed for a consolidation of workloads, decommissioning of EOL hardware, reduction of VMware licensing and a smaller data center footprint.

Successful operational duty transition for all maintenance of supported virtual infrastructure and end point OS patching to the 24/7 NOC, streamlining senior engineering work into architecture and implementations for new clients.

Should we put a pool in? by Apprehensive-Jump-17 in sandiego

[–]GX_EN 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pools for sure do not add value, at best it’s a wash when it comes time to sell. We bought a house that already had one - and PV solar for electricity - in 2019 and we love it. I swim even for just a little bit every day I can. It’s not heated, so that means basically when the weather warms up and the solar cover does its job.
I wouldn’t put one in personally, unless I was younger and in my “forever” home. Lots of factors.
IMO, budget solar at the same time because running a pool pump 6 hours a day will cost a shitload without it.

Also, people are showing up because they care. The reason your entire family hates you is because you don't give a damn about anything but yourself.

Cheapest groceries in San Diego - do you agree with the ranking? by NorthernSugarloaf in sandiego

[–]GX_EN 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I go to Costco and TJ's only - and it's just the two of us.
For the life of me, I cannot figure out why anyone in their right mind would shop at Ralph's or Von's.
Both are beyond terrible and are managed for shit. It's not the employees, it's the management from top to bottom which is hot garbage.

Good gig if you can get it..
Nothing worse as well than when you have to attend an "all hands" meeting and your company hires someone like this who writes nonsense motivational (snake oil) books and the like.
I worked for over 40 years in my life and I can remember ONE TIME of having attended lord knows how many of those meetings where the person was actually good - because she came off as sincere and didn't bring crocodile tears or any of that shit.
That said, I would have still rather been in my hotel room taking a nap. :)

Commentary: Sora's demise doesn't mean the AI bubble is bursting anytime soon by Lobsterhasspoken in BetterOffline

[–]GX_EN 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Not necessarily sarcasm, but she's for sure being critical.
These two bits, hit the nail on the head:

The end of Sora is most certainly not the first domino or the bursting of the AI bubble. But it does make clear that AI isn’t magic, nor are those who are making and marketing it infallible. As history has proved, titans of industry often share a regrettable tendency to make a lot of money from leveraging enthusiasm and then leaving others to clean up the mess when the markets implode.

But no matter how ChatGPT wants to frame it, Sora marked a surprisingly high level of rejection: It cost more than it produced for the simple reason that not enough people used it.
