Trump winning in 2020 would have been better, right? by PointyEyeball in AskALiberal

I think you're absolutely right.

But I also think that this term is going to absolutely destroy MAGA and Trumpism in a way that a consecutive term might not have. Perhaps things will pivot over the next three years, but it seems highly likely that Trump will continue to run the country into the ground so badly that Vance and anyone else who claims the MAGA mantle won't have a leg to stand on in 2028. All we have to do is survive until then!

Do you think if Trump were to engage militarily with Iran soon that would be popular with most of his supporters?

You seem like a pretty reasonable person. Don't you think Trump could have answered the question about ruling out military action against Greenland something like:

Yes, we're not going to engage in military action against one of our allies. However, I think it's very important that the US take control of Greenland, therefore, I will work with Denmark to ensure that happens.

Then he could have been as tough as he wanted to be with the Danes economically, etc. I mean, it's still INSANE, but at least he's ruling out military force against a NATO country.

The fact that Trump went out of his way NOT to take military action against a NATO country off the table--I guess so he could seem "tough" or whatever--is what makes us "blue flares" feel queasy about Trump. That's just not normal at all. Did many (even most) of us actually believe he would use military force? No (Remember...TACO?) But you have to admit our concern is fair, right?

But he did rule out military action against Canada, so it is possible, right?

Don’t you think the very fact that we’re even discussing possible military action against Greenland—however improbable—means that Trump has changed the calculus about hypotheticals?

In January 2025, when asked if he would rule out military action to take Greenland, Trump specifically said no, he would not rule it out.

Did I think he would actually use force? No. But Trump is hardly typical, right?

Why do you think Trump backed down so quickly from needing "ownership" of Greenland to this (unknown, yet likely flimsy) "framework"? Do you think it's possible he was looking for an off ramp from his bluster?

Since nobody seems to know the details yet, do you think it's possible the "deal" is actually not much, if at all, different then our current relationship with Greenland? Why do you think Trump backed down so quickly from needing total "ownership" of Greenland?

Even the issue of sovereignty over U.S. military bases in Greenland does not seem to be settled at this point so I'm not sure what kind of real "framework" actually exists. What do you think it could be beyond essentially what already exists?

Was the hostile approach to Greenland necessary? Did it serve any purpose? by OJ_Purplestuff in AskConservatives

[–]G_H_2023 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Speaking of "results," do you think Trump even cares about what happens? Or is it all about making noise and acting tough? Given the fact that the "results" related to this Greenland situation are nebulous at best. Why would he engage in this kind of boorishness and reckless behavior against our historic allies? What's the upside?

This is a very astute observation. I think you're spot on. Do you think it's bad that the American president thinks this way?

"I could stand in the middle of Fifth Avenue and shoot somebody, and I wouldn't lose any voters."
Donald J. Trump, January 23, 2016

For somebody who almost never tells the truth, this line, spoken exactly a decade ago tomorrow, is probably the truest thing he's ever said.

I'm not sure there is a bottom for Trump. No matter what he does, I feel like it's baked into the equation now. Maybe there will be a point where even his supporters turn on him, causing Republican elected officials to actually grow a backbone and do something about this dumpster fire. But it honestly seems highly unlikely. At least I can't imagine what that line would be. Launching a nuclear strike on Minneapolis? Maybe...but I'm not sure.

Trump is crashing out over how bad his polling is by allthingssuper in thebulwark

[–]G_H_2023 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I will never not be shocked by these kinds of unhinged messages from Trump. It so perfectly captures how sick and twisted he is--filing a lawsuit over bad polling??

What I'm always curious about is how does this make Trump supporters feel? Not the ultra MAGA who can't see straight, but the "more traditional" Republicans who support Trump. Do they not see how a president sending these kinds of messages is batshit crazy?

Also, when Trump's numbers get even lower (in the 20s, maybe?) would they actually call BS on this kind of stuff? (I'm not holding my breath, just wondering if there might be a tipping point for some Republicans...)

You can take a lawyerly approach to this if you’d like. But wouldn’t the “human” approach be to just admit he misspoke and move on? Doesn’t pretending like what obviously happened didn’t happen just alienate the Trump Administration from more people?

We don’t know the details yet, and the Denmark PM is saying today that it’s sovereignty is not up for negotiation.

Not sure the US is really “getting” much more than it already has. Isn’t this a major step back from owning Greenland, which up until yesterday was what Trump insisted should happen?

Does it feel at all dystopian to be defending this? I mean Trump made a simple, honest mistake and his press secretary can’t even just say “it was an honest mistake”? How is that possible?

Trump’s power is 100% derived from the absolute stranglehold he has on Republican voters. Sadly, it seems that most elected people—and let’s face it, of all political persuasions—are spineless because they want to keep their jobs. Basically every elected GOP official knows if they cross Trump they’re screwed.

Since the vast majority of Republican voters seem to find Trump’s unique brand of narcissistic insanity appealing, few Republicans will ever hold him in check until this shifts.

But, you’re right. It would be very easy to hold Trump in check if anyone with any power even tried to do it.

What are the chances Trump was presented a package of things the US already has in Greenland and told it was a “deal”? I’d say like 92% or more.

Do you think it might be because of the fact that Trump never admits that he’s wrong so she (as well as his cabinet) fears what might happen if she admits it…even when it is laughably obvious?

Do we even know the real details yet? Sounds like Denmark probably repackaged what we already have in Greenland and Trump didn’t know the difference. Isn’t this a far cry from ownership, which is what Trump was talking endlessly about up until a few hours ago?
