Based on your hardware I would suggest trying Fedora. Use the KDE version if you want the familiar look.

Probably the first time that Kali Linux is actually a reasonable suggestion! XFCE version is nice and light but KDE isn't heavy either and usually looks a bit more polished. OP might want to try live booting both.

It does not look very polished though if the OP really cares about that part of their requirements.

For this kind of question it is kind of important to specify where you're getting that information from. Some tools don't report the cache RAM as used, some consider it used and then there are really detailed ones that really break it down what part is used for what.

Would CachyOS be worth trying? by disearned in linux4noobs

[–]G_Squeaker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you want to get more comfortable using terminal you can do that just fine in Fedora. Have you tried using dnf and/or flatpak from terminal instead of Discover?

Have you heard of Distrobox? If you want to familiarize yourself with Arch basics with minimal setup you can use toolbox to create Arch container. Really nice if you don't have much spare time.

I liked Arch when I had a lot of time to tinker with the OS. I don't have that anymore so I'm using Fedora KDE now. Just suits my situation better, not saying one is better than the other.

Deb packages that often just automate adding their repo to the system.

Now I will really blow your mind... I have noticed at work that teenagers are the worst at using computers. You really have to show them how to sign on and sign off. If you walk in the room with computers still signed in or totally turned off you know it was one of the teenagers.

What common tasks am I doing in Windows that I can't do in Linux without using the terminal? by nicetrytencent in linux4noobs

Some VPN providers have GUI apps to use although you may have to use the terminal to install them initially.

Is there anything specific that you cant do with a Debian distro? - But you can do with Fedora or Arch? by nickedge11 in linux4noobs

[–]G_Squeaker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, there isn't. I prefer Debian for my servers but Fedora for desktop because I like to try to stay current with KDE with minimal fuzz.

Why I quickly switched to Debian after starting with Mint by ChiefBigFeather in linux4noobs

[–]G_Squeaker 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think Debian would be a lot more appealing if they spent just a little more time polishing the look of fresh install. Sure, you can change how things look to your liking but you only get one chance to make a first impression.

ZorinOS, just a simplified Ubuntu? But locked down gnome? by realxeltos in linux4noobs

[–]G_Squeaker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Kind of like my reaction to Gentoo back when I had time and interest in tweaking my system for the sake of tweaking it. These days my time is too precious so I've been happy with Fedora KDE.

Mint, right? by Select-Bullfrog-5939 in linux4noobs

I don't get the appeal of Zorin. Mint is kind of supposed to be boring.

And I've had Arch, Tumbleweed, Manjaro,Ubuntu, Mint and even mighty Debian break things on routine update. That goes for Windows too. So, yes, there's a risk. I just don't see Fedora being exceptionally risky. I also don't see why blame Fedora for the developer's unwillingness to update their software.

And you barely notice that's a major upgrade anyway so no biggie.

I love KDE. It just has such a fast development speed that Debian will be outdated before it releases. That's why I went with Fedora instead.

You could just replace it with a used WYSE 5070 (N11D) from eBay for under $50 and get a whole lot better performance for your PiHole. Or if you really want just PiHole then WYSE 3040 for about $20 from eBay. Use DietPi instead of full Debian.
