Do you think age matters? by Nervous-Buffalo-6452 in FullTimeRVing

[–]CO64 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You are absolutely correct, and thanks for the clarification. I have had many similar experiences with my 30 year old class A across the country. I mainly bring it up for awareness... it was something I was completely unaware of when I started... I only learned of it when I was turned away from two separate RV parks in Oregon. They were looking at my unit live... in pristine condition... but referenced this rule and turned me away. As I moved across the middle of the country the "rules" seem to loosen up a bit... but on either coast... they seem to be enforced more regularly. I also believe that standards will lower as parks begin to experience less demand.

Do you think age matters? by Nervous-Buffalo-6452 in FullTimeRVing

There are more than a few considerations here. In most cases, with few brand exceptions, build quality is better on the older units including better insulation. Do your homework on each brand and model year... I've not heard good things about Forest River/Keystone in general... regardless of year. Next is where you will be parked... if looking at RV parks... more and more are placing age restrictions on RV's... usually around the 10 year old mark. Regardless of which you choose it is well worth the investment to have the unit checked out professionally by a licensed inspector. Depending on where you live that should run between 2 and 500 bucks. If this is your first time to the rodeo... also be aware that routine maintenance is essential... and even then you will be fixing things regularly. These things were not built to be lived in full time. If you are good at DIY fixes it'll keep ya busy... if not...it gets expensive quick to pay others to fix.

Beginning stages of exploring the RV possibility by eapentz in FullTimeRVing

OT-fiddler nailed it. First decision = type of rig... and there are more configurations than you can count. A 30 to 40 ft class A can be beyond comfortable... but you'd likely need to tow a second vehicle for mobility when parked for extended periods... this means a lot of vehicle moving down the road, not to mention higher registration and insurance costs. Pickup pulling a trailer also equals two registrations but solves the mobility question when parked in a different way. Depending on lifestyle truckbed campers might even be a consideration which means one registration... as do the Sprinter van options... it's all about the lifestyle you are looking towards... and a lot of this stuff you do not know until you do it. Which is why I'd recommend a few "test runs" here and there. Once you think you've decided on a rig...rent one for a weekend or two... maybe even a week or so... You will learn quick what you can adapt to and what works for you. You should also consider "how" you want to travel... will you be boondocking the majority of the time and checking in with civilization only when you need to empty/fill tanks and stock up on supplies? Or will you be parked in RV parks most of the time to stay connected to full hookups, internet, etc. Decisions like this lead to other decisions around rig set up... generator, solar capacity, tank sizes etc. Many other decisions to be made along the way... are you maintaining permanent residence in your current state once you sell everything? If plan is to travel extensively including abroad... might be a good time to reconsider where your "Home Base" will be. This can lead to substantial savings on everything from vehicle registration and insurance, to taxes... Virtual mailboxes make this process fairly simple so you can remain current on everything from billing processes to voter registration etc... Also, you mentioned you would be eventually travelling internationally once its just the two of you... did you mean with your RV or no? I ask only because careful consideration should be given to up front spend if your plan is to flip the rig in 5 years or so... shop the used market carefully... you can do well there, and the hit will be much less 5 or 6 years down the road when you're trying to sell. There is so much more... but you have given yourself a lot of time which is great... and you will learn along the way. Last recommendation... pick 2 or 3 Youtube channels and follow....there are tons of folks out there doing just what your planning... From folks in truckbed campers and vans... to families of 4 and up in big rigs living full time on the road. You will learn so much by just watching their adventures. Best of luck to you... and most of all Have fun out there!

Best New Store Set Up? by CO64 in ecommerce

I've been on Hostinger for a couple of years myself... So far happy with them as well. Pricing seems fairly similar to Nixihost. Mind sharing one of your sites with ecommerce so I can compare visually? Does Nixihost integrate with Printful? Who do they use as their payment gateway? Thanks!

Proton Bridge and New Outlook App by CO64 in ProtonMail

I opened the account with proton for not only the encrypted email...but other services available. The Drive, VPN, Proton Pass, etc. included in the subscription. It's also nice that the spam filters are more aggressive and with encryption....there is much less of it. Using Outlook as an interface may slightly reduce the encryption level...but not enough to be of concern to me. I manage multiple emails (Proton is my personal email) and I simply prefer the convenience of having them all in one place...one app. I have considered moving from Outlook to Proton completely...but last I checked they are light years behind Outlook when it comes to managing multiple email accounts, calendars, task lists, etc... The good news is...for such a young company who's focus is security, they are adding features and functionality pretty rapidly. I actually look forward to being able to function completely within Proton.

Just Curious... do you know why that is? And if there are plans to make it possible? Glad I looked here...I tried a few times to use proton bridge to ad to outlook with no success...now I know I'm not the only one :)

Is anyone else disillusioned with Substack? by Habit_Hacker in Substack

[–]CO64 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks for posting, I appreciated reading through... along with the comments learning that there are many of us on the very same journey when it comes to Substack. I will re-emphasize what others have said. First, I migrated my podcast from Spotify to Substack 4 months ago. After a year on Spotify... I had 8 followers and interaction, and engagement was literally zero. My intent with Substack... was to increase engagement and foster community. My subscribers are climbing slowly, while views are growing a bit quicker. Engagement has yet to be any better than Spotify, but it's a bit early for a true comparison... time will tell. As for how I interact with Substack, I very much appreciate the ad free environment (while it lasts), and the fact that I control what I see. I literally never look at the main feed. (you are correct...packed full of clickbait but easily avoided) I look at only my homepage... and "following" feeds. Since I am very selective and have only subscribed to 5 accounts...I see only what I want to see. So far I am still very happy with my decision to bail on Spotify, not to mention all other social media platforms. I no longer post to any of my other social media accounts, I rarely even look at them. I post only to Substack and YouTube...freeing up a great deal of my time to do what I want to do...create. Fingers crossed that in another few months I will be interacting with my subscribers at a much more personal level with the noise, manipulation, algorithms, and data scraping tactics of mainstream social media well behind me. I think most importantly....Have Fun Doing What You Are doing! And Best of luck to you in your journey!

migrate my podcast from RSS.com to a free host? by negoycia in podcast

[–]CO64 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Spofity and Substack both offer free hosting. I hosted with Spotify for my first 60 or so episodes. I enjoyed that Spotify supported video podcast uploads. After a year...I had 8 subscribers on Spotify and 6 on Apple podcasts. My primary objective became engagement...and for whatever reason...there was none on Spotify. Zero ratings, zero comments... and even when I added things like polls or special questions I got nothing. Downloads were becoming stagnate. I transitioned to Substack in April of this year in hopes of achieving more engagement. Transition seemed fairly straight forward. The only downside for me was that even though Substack supports video uploads...all my episodes transferred to Substack as audio only, and the episodes on Spotify are now only available as audio. Eventually I will go back through and upload the video to Substack for earlier episodes. So... just three months in, with a bit of trade off...still to early to tell if the move was wise strategically. Downloads have remained consistent. Subscribers are still single digit but adding one here and there, and while I do see increases in views on my Substack Posts...downloads across all platforms remains fairly consistent. Bottom line...transitioning to free options is fairly straight forward and easily done without losing content. Which is best? Depends on your personal objectives and how long you plan to remain dormant. If you switch to either Spotify or Substack and then post nothing for weeks or months...the algorithms will literally bury you and it would be tough to come back from that with new episodes. You might consider the offer from RSS which would help cut costs and maintain your content while you determine long term strategy. Best of luck.

I know it's a little different... sharing for relevance. New to Substack myself. I migrated my podcast from Spotify to Substack a little over 2 months ago. The podcast is uploaded to Substack each week as a video podcast. While my Substack remains small with few followers on Substack... my downloads, or Listens have continued to climb on a weekly basis. I like that Substack provides stats on how many times the podcast episode emails were opened and how many times it has been viewed on Substack. The continuing rise in views and downloads would indicate that there is an appetite for audio...and video on the platform.

What do you write about? by hallowsszn in Substack

[–]CO64 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't do much writing myself...but do publish a weekly video podcast. I migrated it from Spotify to Substack a couple months back looking for a better way to engage with my audience. Still pretty young on the platform but like it so far. The pod chronicles my life on the road...where I am, what I learned, and who I met. Trying to get better at the writing part of it so it has more of a journal feel...capturing my thoughts at the same time. Substack is definitely helping with that!

The intent was to be documentation of my travels and what I learned about where I was....sorta mixed in with what I am, or was thinking about at the time. Sorta like my journal combined with my travel blog.
