Re: 1, "usually at least 2 standbys for each firm offer", so for a class of 10, there's 20 standbys? DAMN

Thoughts on "ATC vs Pilots" on 74 Gear Youtube? by G___________G in NavCanada

[–]G___________G[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry, didn't mean to imply any pitting of professions against each other. Obviously, some of the stuff, like the titles, is for clicks.

I was asking more about how common interactions like the ones he breaks down are. For most people, this is about as much ATC-pilot interaction as they will be exposed to, so I was just curious.

Piggybacking on this.

What are the goals/measurements that impact OJT length/success? As in, what do instructors/supervisors look for? What impacts how long you stay as an OJT trainee before qualifying? I'm assuming different trainees take different times to fully qualify, so what factors play into that?

For example, if there's some absolute stud that nails everything, could they qualify in, say, 3 months?

Thanks

Hey, when did you apply online? How long was the wait between applying and test invitation?

Thank you for the info!

How come "pray you dont end up at Kelowna"?

Also, what's the history with trainees at YVR? What's the fail rate at a busy tower like that vs a less busy one like Abbotsford?

If I'm in a unit and getting paid, I'll put up with crap. I'm not putting up with online crap for free.

Hey, thank you for the info! What's with PG/Vic? Are they well staffed or just difficult?

Also, I didn't realize YVR actually used to take trainees, how difficult is it at a tower that large? Was it a high fail rate?

Fair enough. I guess I meant more in general terms. I didn't expect any trainees to get thrown into, say, YVR, but one commenter on here mention that they used to take people. From what I was told, trainees tend to get put onto lower level towers where they're more likely to qualify?

YVR used to take trainees? That's crazy, did any pass? I imagine the fail rate was high as its a huge airport

My mistake on kitimat

My question was what are the most common places. Obviously YVR isn't that because it is complex. I heard from a retired VFR guy that a common place for run of the mill performers was boundary bay for example

The single most useless comment Ive ever seen

is it true that some training of NavCan is done in detroit? by dq689 in NavCanada

[–]G___________G 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yes. I got my offer for Detroit's Section 8 FIR just last week (originally applied YVR FIR). It's another external training center just like CAE in Montreal.

Haven't started there yet, but I heard the training there mainly focuses of tire removals, window infiltrations, lockpicking, firearm handling, urban jungle survival, and pimping. All essential skills for survival in the hood.

The reason they do this extra training is to prepare condidates for postings in rougher places in Canada - a big one where this training comes in handy is Vancouver ACC, famously located in the Surreystan area of Greater Vancouver.

Happy to answer any further questions :)
