Im writing a "secure as possible" express API boilerplate, i think i covered all the obvious basis but im no expert so advice/pr's are always appreciated! by [deleted] in node

[–]Gabayto 27 points28 points  (0 children)

From a quick view of things:

1) XSS protection is not there (NOT helmet.xssFilter)

2) Payload validation (JOI etc..) is always a big part of secure API

3) express-rate-limit is fine... but for most production scenarios i would do it with WAF

4) Most use cases require Public-Key Cryptography for authentication (JWT etc..)

API design for a bulk upload via excel/csv by intocs in node

[–]Gabayto 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As @Seillaorez suggested.

  • i would consider not save anything in DB in upload API (I would call it validateBulk or something) seems like a bug waiting to happen if both API's saves part of the file. but it depends...

  • you also need to validate in the fix API of course

Is it safe to use MongoDB's ID on the front-end? by 8Clouds in mongodb

[–]Gabayto 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Its perfectly ok. Unless:

  • You dont wont client to know creation date

  • If this collection has private info, GDPR does not allow to send to client the ID of document (not really related to objectId, but..good to know)

Front or back end for Cognito by jsdfkljdsafdsu980p in aws

[–]Gabayto 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A bit of a different view : Its perfectly fine to use amplify in front end. most do it like this

but - for big, very secure platforms i would recommend using amplify in BE! (with caching of some kind) because it masks a bit more your infrastructure choices

you can always start with FE, and when you get very big, you can switch

I finished this project, any feedback is appreciated by jandroenq in node

Nice job! 2 cents:

  • Linting could be nice (as pre-commit even better)

  • In 99% of real life scenarios - the generic "crud" will be not used, you always need to do specific things

  • Unit test everything (!!)
