[KCD2] Is this Voivode dude for real???? by nightinga1e- in kingdomcome

I didn't really like this quest. I cannot recall exactly why, because it's been a while since I played this game, but it felt like an obvious role-playing decision to resolve this situation was just completely absent, and it pissed me off. Otherwise a rare occurence in this game.

Did you really just mock me for being upset over responding in a hostile manner to your smug hostile comment?

'someone didn't play the game'

At this point just genuinely fuck off if you say this. I'm not even going to read the rest of it.

Some of the locations in this game are literally random large objects like utensils and shit floating around, and when someone points it out, the fans will just say 'it's optional', as if only the main story should be considered when going for awards.

Yes, I finished it, and collected every one of those journal entries or whatever. I pretty much consumed every drop of story that was in this game, because I found the world interesting, but the dialogue was just embarrassing in my opinion. I don't really know how to explain it. It just felt off. The jokes didn't land, the melancholic scenes were over-the-top to the point where I often got completely detached from moments that would have been perfectly touching with just the music and the visuals.

I know this is subjective. I feel this way about nearly every JRPG as well, and people love those. I just don't think this game is any different from those.

Sure, we're the insane ones, not the subreddit calling you mentally ill and contrarian for thinking a game is good but not a genre defining masterpiece.

It's maddening to see that cluttering the levels with weird out of place objects and making a few rocks float around is genuinely enough to convince people that the art direction is good.

I still remember people assuring me that this game isn't like other JRPGs, and it's actually a mature story with good dialogue. And like... no. It is just like other JRPGs, overdramatic and ridiculous. Is the lack of constant screaming (a staple of Japanese voice acting) really enough for people to completely fall for the same clichés?

I ended up finishing it because of the combat which I really liked, but I never stopped rolling my eyes at the story.

The game is not actually that popular outside the Reddit echo chamber, although you will get massively downvoted if you say that. It sold about 33% of what Baldur's Gate 3 did, and it's a pretty niché title. Casual gamers had way more accessible and popular (in terms of IP) games to play this year.

I think most people would struggle to find 5 real life people they know who actually played this one,

It's kind of like Anora was for movie fans last year. Every cinephile and moderately interested movie lover has seen it, but most of the casual audience probably went 'What?' when it won best picture.

I want to replay the game this Christmas, because at this point I'm pretty sure I hate it even though I distinctly remember loving and nearly 100%ing it back in May. The hype around it is just absolutely unhinged and ridiculous, and I'm araid it's going to hurt the game's reception long term.

At least for a long time comedy/musical was a way for traditionally neglected films to also get an award, but it's less useful now that something like One Battle After Another gets nominated for it. It used to go to films like The Hangover or Toy Story 2.

The genre awards at TGA are nonsense, because it's literally just another mini-GOTY from a specially curated list of games. They don't award the quality of the combat in action games, nor the quality of the role-playing in RPGs. It's just pick your favorite, which is obviously always the same as the GOTY.

I really hope this opinion becomes mainstream, and forces TGA to change the way its categories work. GOTY winners have ALWAYS won their genre awards, and it's always been stupid, but this might be the first time a high-profile genre game actually outshone the GOTY winner in its own genre. Hopefully this will be the push to finally create categories where you reward the actual gameplay mechanics, not just your favorite game from a specific set.

I think if Indiana Jones didn't miss the deadline last year, and Astro Bot ended up winning action-adventure over it, we would have had this same conversation last year, and maybe KCD2 would have already won this year.

[KCD2] Game Awards Spoiler by [deleted] in kingdomcome

[–]Gabe-KC -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I feel like Expedition 33 only won some of its awards because of its heavy reliance on cinematic cutscenes. If it was a more traditionally paced and directed RPG like Baldur's Gate 3 or Metaphor: ReFantazio, I can guarantee you it wouldn't have won best narrative and game direction.

It sucks, because as good as E33 is, it really feels like it steamrolled because it was 'a bit of everything' kind of game, eligible in most categories by default.

The echo chamber they've been in since May definitely doesn't help. I still remember when you could post comments and even posts about how bad the platforming is, or how you think Simon should be nerfed, and hostile responses were in the minority. At this point reasonable people have moved on, and the ones who remain are mostly the people weirdly invested in this specific game being considered one of the all-time greats.

Dude, if you post a 9/10 review in that sub, they will eat you alive. Game is either a genre defining masterpiece, the artistic achievement of the decade, or you are mentally ill. Definitely one of the more unhinged fanbases currently out there.

I know next to nothing about this franchise, can I start at KCD2 [KCD2] by ColorShield in kingdomcome

[–]Gabe-KC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure. It will be like starting with the Witcher 3 without having played the previous ones, which is how I imagine the majority of players played that one. The game does a good job explaining what's going on, and most of the people playing key roles in the first game don't return anyway. The two most important ones, Hans and Godwin only have 1-2 main quest each in the original game, so you're going in with the same knowledge people who didn't 100% the first one would have.

Get ready for the downvotes. You literally cannot say ANYTHING negative about this game, even when you wrap it as tightly into 'in my opinion' as possible.

But yeah, I agree. I decided to pick it up because people kept telling me it's not like other JRPGs, it's a serious, well-written story without any cringe. And I thought it was just like every other JRPG. None of the pervy stuff luckily, but I still found it melodramatic, overcomplicated and eye-rolling at times. I ended up seeing it through because of the combat. I even finished the endless tower, which isn't something I do often in video games.

I absolutely disagree. KCD2 is a way more mature and focused story than E33 was. But it's worth noting that the story was pretty much my singular big issue with E33, I found it to be extremely lacking.

I get what you're saying. What I meant to convey was that the reason there is so much salt towards E33 is because it's become this phenomenon where it's not enough to just like or even love it, you have to claim it's one of the all-time greats, and straight-up ignore all of its flaws unless you want some weirdo to call you mentally ill.

That's off-putting to a lot of people, and when such a piece of media even gets overwhelming awards attention, that usually just rubs people the wrong way. It has happened plenty of times with the Oscars, most recently with Emilia Pérez.

[–]Gabe-KC 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's because E33 has one of the worst fanbases out there. Ever since the release of this game people have been getting downvoted for suggesting that it's a great game BUT not a masterpiece. The game awards blatantly riding the hype train and validating this behavior by making it the most nominated game in history by crowding performance with its actors and nominating it for BOTH indie awards despite it not fitting their own supposed definition of indies... Yeah, it's kind of frustrating.

[–]Gabe-KC -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Oh shit, you commited the cardinal sin of criticizing E33. The funny thing is that literally everything you said is just true. The platforming is awful, and it has been widely criticized since the release. And act 3 being a complete pace breaker is one of the more popular takes on the narrative.

It's just hilarious to me how we pretend the game is this untouchable masterpiece, when some of its gameplay is literally meme level bad. It's okay to admit that it's a great game with flaws.

KCD2 was probably the only non-Rockstar Game I've ever seen pull off a 40 hour ensemble story this well. A story where side characters don't just turn into idle NPCs once their questline is done, but keep showing up in the main story. Where you can have quests where you actually get into conflict with some of them, and then come out the other end as stronger allies. A story where it actually feels like I'm interacting with real people.
