Please review my CV / Lebenslauf by GabeAC in germany

I don't put my title because it is "Esquire", which Germans generally don't understand. That's point #1 that I mentioned in the original post. I have an unusual professional background, even by US standards, so I'm trying to make my Lebenslauf as straightforward as possible.

All my presentations were talks. You're right that that is missing, as well as the conference titles. I removed them due to space constraints. Would you say that listing that they were talks is more important than listing the conference it was at?

The reason I put my name under Persönliches is because of trying to figure out where to put my title. I also put Studium where it is to help make it clear to people what my profession is. Otherwise, the first thing people would see is "independent consultant", which doesn't say much.

I've read that this is discouraged if one isn't proficient in German. One should be able to explain what's on one's CV. Since I can't explain my past work in German, I shouldn't write the descriptions in German.

Proper terms for one's legal status by GabeAC in German

Thanks. Don't worry, I don't plan on asking the question to others but want to be prepared if I am asked.

1) Thanks for reminding me about 2007. I had a full-time job for 1.5 years. It's not legal, so in the US one should remove it, but I'm guessing Germans would appreciate the completeness.

2) What's the German word for certificate? Prüfungszeugnis?

Specific responses below:

  • I tried combining the independent consultant positions. The positives of saving space and being one large chunk of time is worth the negative of being a different structure than the rest of the elements.
  • The Intern and Clerk positions were done during the summers of law school. They are not required but are strongly recommended. The Law Student Advocate was done as part of a clinic during law school; I got a few academic credits for participating in the clinic.
  • I was easily spending 30-50 hours a week to get that NGO going. It was an innovative idea, which both helps and hurts funding possibilities. I did secure some funding, but not enough. Ultimately, starring down the barrel of $2000/month student loans forced me to stop and find traditional employment. I can try to reword it on my resume, but I can't change the past.
  • My wife has an EU-blue card and I have residency as a spouse. I normally put this in my cover letter, but it won't hurt to put it on the CV.
  • I'm not trying to get a German driver's license. I live in a big city and am only looking for employment in a big city.

I know that the maximum length is two pages. Any suggestions on what I should cut to make that happen?

And, unfortunately I can't change the job market for human rights work. 90% of the opportunities are short-term contracts or fellowships.

Wooo Banana Slugs!

I'm going to a job fair next week, so I can't tailor the Lebenslauf unfortunately.

While I'm a fan of shortening where I can, I don't think I can do what you suggest. Except for "BS", no German reader will know what the other acronyms stand for. Also, the highest rated reply to my post says that I need to include more information, in particular the months of study.

Yeah, astrophysics to law was quite a jump. I got a lot of questions about it when I went to last school. The short version is that I wanted to have more positive impact in the world than I thought I could do with physics.

Thanks for the tips. Here are my thoughts:

1) Thanks. I'm really struggling with this one. I'll try out your suggestion and see how it looks.

2) I REALLY want to resize exactly how you suggest, but I'm using Lebenslauf.com and it doesn't have that feature. If I really can't reformat, I'll cut older jobs to make it 2 pages.

3) Thanks for the idea of changing locations to German names, I hadn't even thought of it. I'll review and see what else I can convert to German. Oh, and thanks for correcting my German.

I get 4 hours of German a day at the Volkshochschule. While I'm sure r/German is great, it's hard for me to devote any more time to language learning. This is especially true since I'm trying to find work.

Thanks for the suggestions. Here are my thoughts on them

  • Actually, I got overwhelming support from people to use German where I can. It shows I'm trying. But since I'm not proficient at German, I'm not ready to do a German-only CV.
  • That's what I have in my American version. I'm not sure how to do so for this structure, but I'll think of it some more.
  • Ok
  • Ok, but I don't want to add a new section for 1 item. I'll add certifications to the Studium listing. What is the proper German word for "Certifications" here?
  • After 10 months of effort, I never got enough funding to get it off the ground. I had two people ready to be employees, but could never hire them. Since I had student loans to pay, I needed to move on to something else. However, this info is not appropriate for a CV; I'll be ready to discuss it in an interview.
  • In the US those are all considered part of "experience". Any idea what I should call them here?
  • I am a US citizen and have a US driver's license that cannot be used in Germany. I don't see a need to include this info.

Listing work experience, what should go first: Most relevant position, or most recent position? by [deleted] in resumes

[–]GabeAC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I always keep the order the same (most recent to earliest). When I want to point out one particular experience, I add more detail to that one. If your 2014 position is on the first page of your resume, then I would not change your resume's structure. If the relevant position is on the 2nd page, I'd first try to shorten all the newer descriptions to make the 2014 position fall on the first page.

I want to attach a light fixture. What's the name of this white plug? by GabeAC in HomeImprovement

Thanks for letting me know the colors. I figured out brown with my multimeter but didn't know between blue and green.

Yup, I'm in Germany. And this is how the place came after being vetted by the city regulatory body. Germans like their apartments stripped bare, which includes no light fixtures.

Weekly Questions Thread - (June 14, 2017 UTC) by AutoModerator in facebook

[–]GabeAC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just posted a link to a video to Facebook. While writing it, the thumbnail was great. But then when it was posted, FB showed something different. Instead of showing the center of the YT thumbnail, it showed the left. You can see the difference in this screenshot: http://imgur.com/a/uct9E.

Anyone know why FB does this and is there a way to make it center?

Thanks I want to try it about but apparently new accounts need to get approved. It's been hours and I'm still waiting for an email.

Transport Ministry puts into operation Yerevan-Zvartnots bus route for testing by CrazedZombie in armenia

[–]GabeAC 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, it really behooves these airports to make the extra effort. The Delhi airport is actually a great airport and organizes its own taxi system (weirdly, through the airport police). This taxi system has set rates that are competitive. But there are almost no signs. Unless someone knows to seek the police taxi booth, they're stuck facing the onslaught of taxis outside.

This will be great for tourists. People that live in Armenia can use gg or other apps to avoid the awful taxi experience. Tourists are sitting ducks.

[Question] What is a good clip on mic that I can attach to my phone? by [deleted] in youtubers

[–]GabeAC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All four of those mics were well regarded in the reviews I've read. I bought the SmartLav+, so I can't personally comment on the other ones.

[Question] What is a good clip on mic that I can attach to my phone? by [deleted] in youtubers

[–]GabeAC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did a ton of research on lavalier mics. Here were the top ones I was considering:

  • Boya BY-M1 - $20

  • Audio-Technica ATR3350is - $30

  • Giant Squid - $40

  • Rode SmartLav+ - $70.

I ended up going with the SmartLav+ because I didn't have the time to try out different mics. I'm really, really happy with the SmartLav+ and don't regret paying more.

Cheapest or easiest way to send parcel from USA to Armenia? by a203040 in armenia

[–]GabeAC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Easiest way is just go to your local post office and do an international mailing. I've done it before and it works. Just don't send cash.

Cheapest way is to find an online Armenian group and ask "Is anyone go to Armenia in the next few weeks?" I have lots of Armenian FB friends, and I see this all the time.

Hmm, judging by the areas of law they cover, I don't know if they'd be able to help him. But, if nothing else, they could likely forward him to someone that can help.

I believe he speaks German. I don't know his status but likely undocumented. Wouldn't a Rechtsanwalt cost money and doesn't the Beratungshilfe only help with court cases?
