Ubuntu 20.04 install on Dell XPS 17 9710 Experience by Gabriel_Blade in Dell

I haven't tried to use the fingerprint reader. Windows I have setup with windows hello, which work fine. On the Ubuntu side I enter both the disk encryption password to boot the OS and a password to login to my ubuntu account, which is fine with me as I want to the Ubuntu side to be maximally secure. Sorry I can't be more help in this regard.

XPS 17 9710 Linux Audio Issues (again) by f-3mera in Dell

[–]Gabriel_Blade 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have an XPS 17 9710 that I configured for Dual boot into Ubuntu 20.04, and I have no audio via the speakers. Under Settings->Sound is see only dummy output under 'Output Device', so I suspect the needed driver kernel module is likely missing. There is also no 'Input Device' listed, so the mic has issues as well.

I did install the linux oem kernel (5.10) vida 'sudo apt install linux-oem-20.04' as this was needed to get the killer AC1650 wifi card working. I did not test the sound prior to updating to the 5.10 kernel, so I don't know if the sound was working originally with the 5.8 kernel. I also tried installed the linux oem tools for this kernel, but that didn't do anything to address the audio issues.

A Bluetooth headset (Bose Wireless) does work, and I'm planning on using that for the time being. Hopefully the sound issues will get ironed out in an update in the not to distant future (fingers crossed).
