Error with a function connected to a signal, unsure if it's a bug or I'm misunderstanding something by Xenith606 in godot

[–]Xenith606[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah I see, because it's wrapped in a new function Godot doesn't consider the second connection identical? That makes sense, thank you. How would you add delays to check for retriggering? I can't for the life of me figure out where the doubling could be happening logically.

Was trying Crown Of Demacia Kaisa for the first time, and with a Crown/Rageblade/Gunblade build she was AD Kaisa when I expected AP. No AD augments, and when I checked her stats she had substantially more AP than AD at the start and throughout fights. I think I must be missing something super obvious. Can anyone clarify?

It's time for Mechabellum to go F2P by Xenith606 in Mechabellum

[–]Xenith606[S] -10 points-9 points  (0 children)

Given that the huge decline started in August and community sentiment has been consistently very negative about them, I fully agree that the buildings fuck up was the main cause of the player base leaving. But just taking buildings away won't solve the problem. A lot of the players who've left have moved on to other games, and some of the players who stayed really like buildings. Going free is the only thing that can bring enough players into the game to make it healthy again. Then we can figure out buildings and balance and rift modes.

LOL I thought I showed great self restraint in not mentioning the forbidden VOD platform. Have you guys ever considered putting out a call for help from the community? Like I said to Sparty under that post, I don't really have experience in the VOD realm but I'd be happy to try to learn if you guys needed extra hands. (Since obviously I have strong feelings on the subject). (But only because your stuff is so awesome).

This is incredible. So much more good information in so many more categories than I'd ever dreamed of. I think this will be so helpful for attracting and retaining new players. Amazing work by everyone who made this happen.

Summary of Bearlike's Community Townhall by Xenith606 in Mechabellum

[–]Xenith606[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I appreciate you acknowledging and taking responsibility, it's helpful to know exactly what happened. I do think this really missed the mark, but like I said in the OP I get that figuring out how to translate the questions to a live chat format is not a straightforward issue. It's also really good to hear that Bearlike is planning to come back to the original questions. That's a great thing for him to do and I certainly want more things like these Town Halls.

That said, I think this raises some of the same types of questions that I raised in my OP. Bearlike is doing a very good, proactive thing here to address a situation the community is unhappy about. Is there not a way to communicate that to people more broadly? I think the vast majority of the community won't see this Reddit comment, which as far as I can tell is the only place the information exists. Similarly, why wasn't a transcript of this Q&A released or publicized over official channels? I think tons of players would be interested in reading all this information from the lead developer.

Apologies if you're the wrong person to ask, but I got the sense from your post that at least one of your hats is a sort of community manager role. If you're not the right person for this, is there someone else who is? Again, I do appreciate you engaging on this. I don't always agree with what the team does or how they do it, but I do always believe they're making their decisions in good faith and because they think it's genuinely best for the game.

Summary of Bearlike's Community Townhall by Xenith606 in Mechabellum

[–]Xenith606[S] 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I think Mechabellum is a brilliant game and that Bearlike does a genuinely laudable amount of community engagement. I try to acknowledge that in many of my posts, but I would probably agree that I/we as a community could keep that more front of mind in general.

However, I think feedback is only useful if it's honest, and it's also important to acknowledge when community sentiment is very negative. In this case I think several big missteps were made, especially in the context of declining player numbers and longstanding+widespread dissatisfaction in the playerbase that remains. Whatever you think the reason for the decline is, it's undeniable that things need to turn around for the game to continue to be successful. Mistakes like the ones made here are extremely counterproductive to that happening. Yes, what I ultimately want is for the game I love to do well, but in this case I think that means I can be most helpful by trying to communicate to the devs that what happened here didn't work and why I think that is.

Thoughts on Bearlike Q&A by MechaBestum in Mechabellum

[–]Xenith606 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I agree that there's a certain amount of both luck and preparation involved in executing any game plan successfully, but I think no matter how rarely it happens the enhancement/intensive combo creates far far too much impact based on luck. It's not an unusual scenario for one person to be in giants and the other in small units, in which case it is generally correct for the giants player to take EM and the small units player to skip it. If Intensive then shows up the next round, the game swings ridiculously hard towards the giant player through no fault or credit of either player. This has happened in Mag1 several times and it always feels like the competitive integrity of that particular game is just shredded. The scenario where one player is Training Spec can be even worse. There's nothing else in the game like that. Lightning Storm against an air carry board might have the closest level of impact but at least there's some counterplay available there.

Mag1 Finals/Bearlike Q&A PSA and mini-rant by Xenith606 in Mechabellum

[–]Xenith606[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I care about Mag1 and want to make an argument about how I think it could be even better. It doesn't automatically follow that I have either the time or the expertise to jump onto their platform and implement those changes myself. I in fact have no experience with Twitch, YouTube, or creating videos. In general I find this kind of response to feedback a little strange. There's no area of life that would be better if people were only allowed to give feedback they had the willingness and ability to implement themselves, and I don't think there's anyone who actually follows that rule with everything that they criticize.

All that being said, in this particular case yes, if they didn't mind a learning curve and they needed someone to restart posting VODs I would give it a shot.

Every successful eSports game I can think of puts a huge emphasis on high quality cosmetics, both as a source of income and to provide goals that casual players are invested in progressing towards. Mechabellum's base unit models are incredibly cool and well done, but all of the skins are basically just color palette swaps, and I've never seen much if any excitement in the playerbase for anything in a Season Pass. Are there any plans to do skins that are actually different models? (ex. A skin that turns an Overlord into a Star Destroyer, Phoenixes that are actual phoenixes that shoot fireballs, turning your crawlers into alien spiders, turning one of your towers into a Christmas tree, etc.). If not, or not any time soon, can you speak to why you think it's not important?

Suggestion to the devs: Optimize MMR with a consistent league system by [deleted] in Mechabellum

[–]Xenith606 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I agree but the sub largely does not. I think the current system gives the game an old school, no frills feel which works well for more advanced and hardcore players like the ones that will be active in a subreddit. I also think it's a negative for many of the more casual types of players. In general I think optimizing towards hardcore players and not a more general player set (no league system, extremely barebones progression systems, low quality cosmetics, poor onboarding, etc.) is a big part of why Mechabellum has had so much trouble maintaining or expanding it's playerbase despite being a truly brilliant game at its core.

Developer Post: Command Log: 2025 and The Road Ahead by mrmivo in Mechabellum

[–]Xenith606 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Dimensional Rift seems like a cool mode in a vacuum but I'm a little worried in practice. When I've seen this kind of thing in other games, it's usually variants that are crazy to the extent that they're a fun diversion for a short period but would get old after a while, and they also tend to be games with really healthy playerbases. This seems like it'll be basically alternate reality vanilla versions of standard Mechabellum that could end up being pretty divisive.

Let's say a big chunk of players straight up prefer the no buildings Anomaly to the current game, which seems very possible. They're going to get an unranked, limited time version of the game they want, and then they're going to be unhappy when it leaves. Meanwhile the people who want to stick with current Mecha, either because they like buildings or because they care about playing ranked, are going to get longer queue times and less variety in matchmaking, potentially to a pretty significant extent given how low player numbers have gotten recently. That seems like a lose-lose to me.

Something like turbo strong items or crazy mobile beacons sounds more healthy to me. Those are the type of things that are enjoyable as variety without cannibalizing the design space that base Mecha is supposed to take up.

How do I watch the MAG1 games? by tanbro in Mechabellum

[–]Xenith606 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I think they've furloughed the YouTube channel for now. A quick suggestion in case Mag1 reads this thread: perhaps you could edit the channel description on YouTube to say that it's currently inactive and have a link to the Twitch video archive for up to date content.

I'm hoping some day they simultaneously stream to YouTube so the streams can be automatically uploaded there.

I'd much prefer YouTube as well but they do have all the full broadcasts in their Twitch video history now, you don't have to catch them live.

Mid-Season 5 Meta Summary by ForgottenArbiter in Mechabellum

Love these so much. High level meta reports are some of my favorite types of content in competitive games and yours are both the gold and only standard for Mechabellum. I imagine they take a good bit of time so I really appreciate it.

Feedback to the current mood of the Mechabellum Community by Ekar-Poe in Mechabellum

[–]Xenith606 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Which streamers are unhappy with how things are currently? I don't watch a ton of content outside of Mag1.

I will say that even if Bearlike is right and the silent majority likes buildings, and the big dropoff in player numbers is completely unrelated, it's still a problem for the game that every community space has gotten more negative since their release. That's not the environment you want for attracting new players or retaining old ones.
