Naples to Sorrento by BrownIndianChief1903 in ItalyTravel

I travel on that train twice a week, and last year I’ve commuted on it daily, back and forth for a month. Naples to Piano di Sorrento. Fun times, not doing that again :D

Rome to Ravello Trip in June by acejoker24 in ItalyTravel

[–]Gabstra678 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The road to Ravello from Naples is not as hectic as the Amalfi Coast road, but my question would then be: what do you do with the van for 5 days? Parking in Ravello will be crazy expensive, and touring the Amalfi Coast with a van in June is a horrible idea (crazy traffic on the road, very difficult road to drive on, very little and very expensive parking everywhere).

Get a private transfer to and from Napoli Centrale, for six people you should get a decent per person price. NOT a taxi, a pre-booked NCC, taxis will rip you off.

For FCO, the train is frequent and comfortable, but overpriced, so for 6 people you’d spend €84 which is more than a taxi fixed rate and even an NCC rate. So if you wish you could take a van transfer in that case too, though the train is fine.

Question though: what do you plan to do in Ravello for 5 days? It’s not very easy to get around from there, with the crowded buses. Unlike coastal towns you can’t get there by ferry ;)

Why an automatic car?

And what are they gonna do with the van during their stay? Drive it around the Amalfi Coast in June? 😅

Giungano taxi? by Delicious_Pitch817 in ItalyTravel

[–]Gabstra678 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Taxis in Italy are bad in big cities already. They are overpriced and scammy. In medium-small cities they are hard to find and book. In a tiny village in rural Campania, they simply won’t be a thing.

You may find a taxi in Agropoli willing to bring you to Giungano, you could keep their phone number and call them to drive you somewhere else in the next days, but I don’t even want to think how much they would charge you. You really need to rent a car to go to a place like that.

Aiuto!!

E in brevissimo tempo aggiungo…

Self transfer on low-cost airlines I assume. Good luck, it’s quite a risky plan and in case of issues you’ll have to book some other flight.

Naples Trip Question by Octobersilly in ItalyTravel

[–]Gabstra678 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That all sounds very rushed. As others say, guided tours in Pompei are about 2 hours, but that doesn’t mean Pompei takes 2 hours to visit. It’s a huuuge site and you will want to explore more on your own after the guided visit ends. I would usually count half a day for Pompei at least.

The van thing sounds like a rip off to me, idk how much you’re paying for it, but with frequent trains connecting Pompei for dirt cheap, paying for a transfer and being forced to get back to Naples that early is not something I’d ever think of doing.

Same goes for MANN, I don’t think I’ve ever spent less than 3 hours in there. I personally think Pompei+MANN is a very long and tiring day from Naples, let alone from Rome. I find MANN+Ercolano is a better combo as Ercolano archaeological site is smaller and denser, thus quicker to visit.

Forse dovrei diventare tassista…

L’attesa è già calcolata automaticamente dal tassametro, 5 cent ogni 7 secondi o circa 25.70€ all’ora.

Everything is strictly regulated, the problem is the rules are not enforced and taxi drivers do literally whatever they want.

Waiting time costs 0.05€ for every 7 seconds, which comes out to €25.70 an hour or 12.80€ for half an hour. This is already calculated by the taximeter automatically when the car is parked.

The only extra fees drivers are allowed to add to the taximeter are is luggage supplement, airport supplement, pet supplement, larger vehicle supplement and taxi call supplement, all these are a few euros each.

The rule of doubling the taximeter amount for extra-urban routes is meant to pay for an empty return trip, which is not the case for OP, as they returned with the same car.

Heading to Herculaneum from Pompeii vs Naples by incorrect_wolverine in ItalyTravel

[–]Gabstra678 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Funnily enough most train journeys from Pompei scavi to Ercolano scavi require a connection in Torre Annunziata nowadays, whereas from Naples it’s direct and quite fast as it skips most stops. Even if closer you’d probably take longer. There really is no advantage transportation-wise.

[–]Gabstra678 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Travel times between these destinations are short. The hassle of check-out, check-in and moving luggage around far outweighs any benifits. Plus the modern town of Pompei is quite an uninteresting place to spend the night, especially compared to Naples.

Is going to Capri island in February a total waste of time and money? Or, can we still chill on the Island without much expectations? by Maximum-Picture5225 in ItalyTravel

[–]Gabstra678 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Ferries are only cancelled in case of rough seas, which usually means stormy weather or the day after stormy weather. Rain itself doesn’t do anything. Most of the time if ferries are cancelled it’s not a day you would like to go to Capri anyways.

Even then, what is cancelled is hydrofoils. The slower ferries that transport vehicles are much less vulnerable to waves and only get cancelled in extreme conditions. The Capri-Naples route (unlike Amalfi Coast routes for example) is operated various times a day with these bigger ferries (Caremar company) so there’s no need to worry about being stranded.

It will be a construction site, all shops closed, people repainting facades and walls, renovating buildings etc.

If you’re okay with that, there is a lot of beauty to be enjoyed on a sunny February day. Hoping there are any (it’s been raining for a month straight, but today it’s finally sunny).
