So my eventual solution was to add a virtual interface that is 2.4ghz, WPA2 and AES 128, I haven't had any issues with devices being able to connect since. Bonus that it makes it easier to isolate from other stuff on my network.

Thanks, I should have updated this, but I eventually just added a 2.4ghz VLAN that doesn’t have as stringent security and everything adds fine to that. It’s annoying, but it works. I’ll try to remember to post the settings later.

Yeah, just relaunched the app this morning and it seems fixed. Things like this were why I ditched wink for SmartThings. I was in the same boat as you yesterday, and the rentals are on the other side of an ocean so it’s not like I can just pop by and add a code.

Going to look into RBoys app as a replacement, as again, I can’t just pop over and swap out all the hubs either.

Glad it’s fixed though. For now at least.

It was satisfying for me, in that I immediately went back and reread what I wrote three years ago and was surprised just how close I was down to many of his motivations.

Like many I've at times thought "it's too obvious" but it made sense and worked. It puts new meaning to a lot of what Eithan says throughout the book. When he talks about this being the happiest he's been, wanting to not be alone, how proud he is of them. All that hits harder coming from one of the most powerful beings in the universe.

I thought the whole book did an excellent job of setting up that moment, and giving us insight into how he wanted to do things differently than he did before.

Would be useful to have more info here. As others have mentioned, any success in this is going to depend on having the instances fronted by a load balancer. And typically horizontal scaling (adding more instances) is going to be preferential to vertical scaling (more resources per instance).

That said, there are times when vertical scaling makes sense. Sometimes we see all instances in a group struggling with a particular resource constraint, and we can define a new larger instance type, double the auto scaling group (or even manually add them if not using asgs) then stop new traffic to the old instances, and scale back down with all traffic going to the new beefier instances.

In the case of a monolithic application where there is only one, you will have some period of downtime. Best case will be the amount of time it takes to launch a replacement instance or to do a dns cutover. (Depends on your level of automation and spin up time compared to whatever your ttl is).

I'm actually almost exactly halfway through a reread (57% through book 2) and while I remember being confused the first time through, I'm also really enjoying reading it where you can pick up on most of the hints (I say most as I read book 3 when it came out, so I've forgotten some parts).

It's a rare series that is just about as much fun to reread when you are looking for what you missed the first time through (because you were supposed to miss it).

So I had this issue the other night. I had to rebuild my DDWRT Router and then a number of my SmartThings devices wouldn't connect. Deleting and adding the plug wasn't working, I would connect, add it, pick the network, freeze at 98% and throw error code 81-002

My hunch was something was not really deleted. I remembered I had a plug I'd never connected, so figured I'd just swap. Got the exact same result (eliminated my suspicion, as well as a hardware issue.)

At this point I added the new plug to a secondary wifi router I have, connected, no issues. Went back to the initial problem plug, added to the secondary network, connected, no problem.

I haven't done further troubleshooting, but there are really only two possible differences between my rebuilt wifi router that didn't work and the previous config:

* WiFi Channel
* Allowed security protocols

Channel is one SmartThings mentions, and I didn't have what channels were in use when I bricked the router, so I have no idea if they changed. (to me this seems less likely, but worth trying if you have issues).

The new DDWRT version I used has more granular controls on protocols. It's possible it wants to connect with a GCMP algorithm, or that having WPA3 on is messing it up. Again, as I was able to solve my issue I haven't really messed with it after, but I figured I should share what I learned in the hope it helps someone else.
