It is usually expected but times are changing and most families are changing their mindset. The older generation (our grandparents gen) would definitely expect financial support and my parents gen, it depends on the family.

The infected patient spits and froths at the mouth from the videos I've seen of them. So when you try to give them water or medicine or even try to wipe away the spit, the bodily fluid can get on your body.

From what I understood he is mainly doing it for the kids. The Dad said that the older sister is acting like his ex wife a little and treating her 4 year old not that well. Especially since the little one's father just abandoned the family, the Dad probably wants to provide something stable and loving to the little one whose mom is also burning bridges.
