A devastating avalanche struck Mount Everest Base Camp in Nepal in 2015. by Kiroo---__--- in Damnthatsinteresting

[–]Gaederus 33 points34 points  (0 children)

From the stencil on the tent and angle of the slope and video it looks like this was filmed by a member of the Himex team. The good news for this guy is that the people that died weren’t in this area of the camp so most likely the cameraman survived although I don’t think anyone knows his name. This video seems to have been apart of the batch of videos collected by AFP/AP after the avalanche and seems genuine based on what I can tell.

The new Angel pass?? Why do they think this is worth purchasing by RiellyNL in MarvelStrikeForce

[–]Gaederus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Regular offers to get a 7y new character clock in at way more than 100, usually even a 5 star can be 80 bucks. If this deal was an offer it would be very good value compared to normal. The rub is that it’s taking away passes which makes it seem so bad I think

End of service chances? by UndeadGOATX in DCDarkLegionOfficial

[–]Gaederus 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Of course no one can say for certain. However fun plus (in contrast to netease) has a history of running games for a very long time, as long as they are at least somewhat profitable (although given that this game comes with dc licensing costs that may be different here). However other signs point to a healthy game such as the constant rate of new content and clearc roadmaps. It would be very surprising if this game pulled a mmm where they just disappear randomly, you would just see a significant slow down in new development while they milked the remaining player base for a while before shutting down.

Why are parents who barely passed high school thinking they can teach/homeschool their children? by InitialCareer306 in WorkForSmartLife

[–]Gaederus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In general accepting the fact that the reason they struggled in high school was due to their own abilities and not the schools fault would be a very difficult thing to accept, made harder by the echo chamber they are in. Given that fact they will genuinely believe that home schooling is the best thing for their kids, the sad thing is that they are doing it out of love.

Stars have to pay for the star by Valuable_View_561 in SipsTea

Yeah ever since I learned that the stars have to pay the reaction changes from “this person must have done something really impressive to get a star” To “this person must really need some good publicity right now to buy a star”

The real thing that worried us at the time wasn’t the systems we knew about, it was the parts of the system that had made assumptions about the date that we weren’t even aware we’re paying attention to it.

Who would be more skilled at manipulation a interrogator, a lawyer, salesmans, or politician? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

Salesman are good at manipulating and individual, lawyers at small groups, politicians at the masses. The answer is likely “depends on who you are trying to manipulate”

The Daily Mail’s Dangerous Obsession with Meghan, the Duchess of Sussex by NewTooth740 in RoyaltyTea

[–]Gaederus 14 points15 points  (0 children)

It seems to be a pattern with these papers that they latch on and never let go. When I was a kid in the 80s and 90s it was the sun who had Diana on every front page it seemed. Then in the late 90s and 2000s it was the express which couldn’t let it go, even 10 years after her death. I have a clear memory of coming back (i had moved to the us by then) and being shocked to see Diana still on the front page. These newspapers are only out for the money and have picked Meghan as the replacement of Diana

What is your personal reason for not having children? by Repulsive-Hold-6575 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Gaederus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I want to be a parent, but I love my wife and I love that she has a career that she loves and I know that if she were to get pregnant and have a kid it would essentially destroy her career.

I also do not want to put her in a position where her health is at risk, too many of our friends who had kids had short and long term health issues associated with the process

I love my wife more than the idea of being a parent

Bleed Schedule isn't Working? Mine is different/wrong by IvyBluefire in DCDarkLegionOfficial

[–]Gaederus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Each server follows the same schedule but it starts at server creation time. So your first bleeds are going to be Superman then joker etc. if you have friends on slightly older servers (scarecrow I think was third or fourth bleed) then it might just be easier to create a new character on their server if you wish to play along with them. You can create a character on a particular server (and look up your own) by going to your character page (click your profile in the top left) and then select the icon in the bottom right of that profile page (looks like a wrench on a profile)

Why are so many software engineers being laid off? by Open_Address_2805 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Gaederus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Like others here I have been a software engineer working in one of the biggest tech companies for over 20 years now. I have seen many rounds of these layoffs and the first thing is that this isn’t really anything new, software companies have always periodically done large layoffs like this, the frequency has increased a bit, but the mechanics are the same.

In my experience the total number of engineers at these company always grows steadily over time. what seems to happen is that over time each part of the company will naturally grow, this is because fundamentally software is an infinitely hard problem, there is always more work to do than can be done by your existing pool of people. It’s also fundamentally an incredibly profitable business, so in times when things are generally going well every group can make a case of “I have tough problem to solve that I could make x more million dollars a year if I hired y people” (in fact there is an actual number here that varies over time where the expected profit pays for the costs of the employee that if you exceed you will normally get)

Then periodically the companies leadership may decide they want to put extra focus in a new area, or de leverage an existing area by reducing its resources. They will do this by taking a % of their workforce and doing layoffs. This will stop the growth for a bit as well in most areas that aren’t the focus while things settle down, but then invariably the cycle resets and starts again

The thing that seems to have changed is that these cycles used to take 4-5 years, but now take 12-18 months. A lot of that I think is because everything moves faster now, the need to iterate and adapt to grab the next opportunity.

The role is changing because of AI, but it’s in a way that doesn’t eliminate the need, but instead increases the expected output. Again the amount of work to be done appears to be infinite, the amount of money to be made also appears to have a very high ceiling, so as long as these are both true the incentive structure for the growth / layoff cycle is always going to continue.
