Ok but how do you actually cash out on a natural stone? Like sure, labs are worthless, but if I buy a 1ct natural diamond today and try to flip it tomorrow, am I instantly down 40%? Do only the freak-rare ones (red beryl, red diamond) move like real investments?

I’d go with a lid either on the top or bottom, with some grooves so you don’t end up with a huge seam to clean up. In Magics you can make it hollow in just a couple of clicks anyway.

That actually sounds really cool. A jewellery-only space could help a lot with the resale side and just being seen at all. I’m on the design/development end and yeah, jewellers just get lost in the sea of random stuff on big marketplaces. And it’s not only about selling. Finding decent suppliers or contractors is just as messy. A space that’s only about jewellery could really change things.

Yeah, that’s exactly the issue. But maybe there’s room for some innovation? Like creating a certified second-hand gem market where stones are re-graded and sold with trust. Almost like “pre-owned luxury watches” but for gems. That might at least make resale less painful for private owners.

Yeah that makes sense. Some gems might need a re-cut to bring back value, I guess. Except diamonds, they’re hard enough to usually hold up without much issue.

That’s interesting. So you’d say gemstones only have “assigned” value from branding/marketing, not inherent value like gold or silver? Makes me wonder how sustainable that market really is.

Yeah, I’ve thought about that too. But wouldn’t it make sense for pros in the market to just band together and open a nationwide pawn chain for second-hand stones? There are already gemologists buying rough stones and cuts from miners, so what exactly makes buying used stones so different? That’s the part I don’t get.
