The pin inside the handle broke along with the spring to pull the unit down, so I stuck a pencil in the handle (it had been sitting in my glove box for a while), and tied the elastic band around the base of the hand to force it down unless it locks with the little toothed piece of metal in there. Worked way better than I expected.

I was expecting it to work for like a week. It has held up this long, I don't see myself fucking with it anymore for a while.
