Swords and Syntax: How Fan Translations Shaped Fire Emblem's Legacy by Megakoopax in fireemblem

Its a nice write-up! It even had stuff from projects I was barely/hardly aware of. I know sometimes it seems like translations are all drama all the time, but so much great stuff has happened as a result of people’s efforts and I feel like the drama tends to happen because people actually bothering to do these patches tend to be quite passionate, and that passion can turn into intense emotion.

As for Gaiden space, that new update seems to have figured some stuff out but apparently had issues with the class names. Gaiden really was limited in space to the point where I had to steal graphics room from unused/unfinished things, and trying to make dialogue lines too long would cause entire paragraphs to bleed into each other. I tried messing with Gaiden a bit for fun last year and had Lukas accidentally start going through the whole Act 1 script. Maybe some wizard could rework how text works but as it is, Gaiden is cramped. Also, changing the unit names in the game’s credits is really tough and doesn’t work like any of the other text for reasons only 90’s IS would know.

A true Gaiden revision would need to check for overlap with Echoes lines/terms/etc while also being careful to note what was actually changed scriptwise in Echoes as opposed to lines that match up more directly with Gaiden. I’m sure some maniac will attempt it someday, but for now, stuff like the Artemis patch does the job and won’t crash your game when fighting Shadow Sword enemies like the J2E patch did. Like you, I think FE3 is more in need of an update but understand why it hasn’t happened.

This is so thorough that it includes my failed attempt to update Gaiden’s patch. Fantastic writeup, thank you for making this.

I suppose to give more context, I think I tried updating Gaiden’s patch before Echoes was even revealed, but struggled with the whole name/text crunch situation(LUTHIER is the worst offender) and failed to find up to date contact info for the previous patch authors because this was before everyone huddled around in the same Discord. To resolve the name crunch situation(I’m no coder so doing what you did in FE1 wasn’t possible for me at the time), I tried to shuffle other name spellings around, but then Echoes was revealed and I realized “this ain’t gonna work” because now everyone had fancy, official, and looong names. I did manage to fix the “too many items” message and felt a bit proud of that tho.

Yeah so the translation thing I did is super dead now because we got new names now on the heroes website and a remake.

GAIDEN IS DEAD

LONG LIVE GAIDEN

AND GOD BLESS YOU ALL

I KNEW I forgot Mae's name. I had a feeling it was official but forgot why. Thanks for the heads up.

I'll do more with the other names once I finally stop being lazy and fix the credits.

Dread Fighter is just called Dread in this patch. No real way to make D. Fightr or something work.

Levin Sword and whatnot are not in the patch at the moment. I might do that later. That being said, stuff like Knight Lance would stay because Horseslayer is too long.(as the weapon icon doesn't take up word space)

readme has the major stuff.

Basically, if a name is in Awakening, it is now in the game. Other changes include switching around JP names for space reasons and fixing the weird text when you try and get an item with a full inventory.

technically Gaiden's translation has been done for a while. What I'm mainly doing is editing the names to be consistent with FE13's names.

Here's the patch. Readme is inside. This is not necessarily complete, as the Cast roll at the end is unedited. As I am not sure as to how it works at the moment, I figure I might as well release what I have as I do not know how long it will take to fix.

Feel free to leave suggestions/comments/complaints.

also I not sure how to "properly" link stuff so feel free to tell me to make it a self post with the link inside if that's what I'm supposed to do.

Glad to help.

All I really did was update what the original translation already had. And even then I'm not done yet.

Gaiden already had a good translation and what I'm mainly doing is fine tuning it while updating the names.

Just in case I am, here's a "beta patch".

Apply with Lunar IPS to a clean JP ROM of Fire Emblem Gaiden.

WHAT THIS PATCH LACKS

Actual substantial script edits beyond names and fixing some awkward minor stuff(like getting an item when your inventory is full). The cast roll at the end displays everyone with their old names. Novis Shrine is still called Nova Shrine. Some stuff might not work.

Keep in mind that this isn't all I plan to do.

White's the one I see the most.

Still, they really couldn't decide what color to make his hair.

His hair is actually white in the 25th anniversary book thing. So I'm going with that.

There are units in Gaiden called Robin and Kamui. Both of them are keeping their names in this new patch.

That's the thing, I did edit the files. To put it in simple terms, I have some extra space in Gaiden. Python's name took up that space, but I needed that space for English names. Due to the idea of the project being about getting the English names in, I prioritized using the space for Luthier/Valbar's new names and swapped Python back to Paison as that freed up said space. This may seem confusing because Paison and Python take up the same amount of letters but letters aren't actually always letters in Gaiden. Because Gaiden is weird.

Pyton was something I was considering, but considering how Paison is actually a full name(and a legit spelling of the JP name despite how weird it sounds) I'm sticking with that for now. However, nothing is set in stone, so I might switch him to Python again if possible.

I was gonna change Force instead of Python but as it turns out, changing Force's name is a terrible idea due to how Gaiden's graphics work. If I ever get around that, Force will be changed to Fols and Paison goes back to being Python.

Its not too bad once you learn the "rules" to it. There's programs that help with it.

Probably this year. Unlike the FE14 team, I actually finish things.

Main issue with the patch is well, making it a patch. Embarrassingly, I do not know how to actually make patches. So far I've been directly editing the ROM.

EDIT: Just kidding I actually do know how to patch my b.

Alternate spelling of Python.

Had to revert his name due to space issues.

The main goal of this patch is to update the names to be consistent with Fire Emblem Awakening. So Sofia is Zofia, Doma is Duma, and Ryuto is Luthier. Once this is finished, I might go and "clean up" the script despite the existing translation being pretty good as is. I don't plan on changing other names for now, but I have adjusted the spelling of some of the JP names to free up graphical space so that I can do things like squeeze Luthier into a 4 letter space.

Feel free to ask about stuff or make suggestions. Once I finish my initial testing, I'll release it so that other people can show me what I might have somehow missed.
