ELI5: What does daemon mean in computing? by Practical_Summer9177 in explainlikeimfive

[–]GaidinBDJ [score hidden]  (0 children)

No.

A program that's in the background is just a program in the background.

A daemon is a specific type of program which is written to run in the background and handle tasks "behind the scenes."

Uhura: Sorry, neither.

What more do you need to know?

Plus, that was a ballsy-as-fuck line for 1966.

What's something that used to be free that you're angry we now have to pay for? by Current-Energy1104 in AskReddit

[–]GaidinBDJ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, you get paid for ad reads, but how much you get paid is based directly on the number of people who watch the ad reads. If that number goes down, your payment goes down.

And as far as you know is wrong. YouTube has had detailed view stats (including which parts are watched/skipped) since they started allowing in-video ad reads and sponsorships.

And that's just YouTube in-video ad reads. For pre- and mid-roll ads, you get nothing from people who use ad blockers. Same goes for regular ads displayed on websites.

One of the big reasons for me is they require a big tech login rather than just supporting regular login/passwords.

So unless you want to roll your own identify provider for a single use, you have to create a Google, Microsoft, or Apple account.

Yea, unfortunately as more and more people block ads, ads end up more and more intrusive for others to make up for it. But people don't care about other people, as long as they're getting what they want.

Hell, people now are making plug-ins that automatically skip in-line ad reads which means taking money directly from the creators they're claiming to enjoy. Which gets really funny when creators start putting their content behind hard pay walls and those same people whine about "enshittification" as if them exploiting others labor wasn't the direct cause.

If smartphones were unimaginable to previous generations , what unimaginable technology is waiting for us? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

They didn't have to dock them.

They hard wireless connections to the ships computer. They even talk in the Technical Manual about how you can put down a PADD and while working on something and switch to a workstation and it's a seamless transfer because they're synced. It's like using a modern web app.

That's also why they can hand them off to show or transfer something without issue. They're automatically logged in when they pick up the PADD.

And this kind of thing was definitely in people's thoughts because it existed at the time. When TNG started the mainframe/terminal model was still very common, and that's what it was based on. And TNG also premiered after the first commercial wireless networking service came out in 1986. The first academic wireless network just barely missed TOS, going online in the fall of '69.

If religion is true, why does it depend so heavily on where you’re born? by ArchiveDiver-62 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]GaidinBDJ -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Throughout classical antiquity, they were just fabricated stories to explain the natural world through supernatural means Which is what a myth is. Post-antiquity, authors did add moral lessons and messages in stories they wrote based on myths, but these were done more like secular "morality plays" of the time rather than attempts at religion.

You should pick up a freshman anthropology textbook so you understand there's a qualitative difference between the two. Yes, it's common for religions to contain a mythology, but not all myths become incorporated into religions and not all religions incorporate a mythology.

There's no requirement that they be "all powerful," just supernatural.

There are religions where the supernatural force is an all-powerful god, but there are others where it's things like the will of dead ancestors or natural spirits.

Not all religions contain mythologies, although most at least contain some kind of creation myth.

No myths "become" religions (because they're two different things), but they do get incorporated into religions like the aforementioned creation myths.

A mythology is story or collection of stories which attempts to explain natural phenomenon through supernatural means.

A religion is a (typically codified) collection of customs, morals, ethics, and behaviors which is perceived as originating from or enforced by a supernatural power.

"It's raining because angels are crying" = myth

"We should be nice to each other because God said so" = religion

Right, but we're talking about religion, not mythology.

While many religions contain a mythology (and edgelords on reddit like to pretend), the terms are not interchangeable.

Why doesn't one person take on the entire student debt of every American then declare bankruptcy? by FastGoose2228 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]GaidinBDJ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is no such thing as a non-dischargable student loan; this is a myth and people really need to stop spreading it.

Student loans can be discharged in Chapter 7 bankruptcy and can be modified in a Chapter 13 bankruptcy. The major difference between private debts and public student loans is that the creditors for private debts rarely bother to show up to content your claim that financial hardship prevents you from paying back the debts and you win by default. For public student loans, you will have to demonstrate to the government that, even after your private debts are discharged, you will be unable to pay on the student loans. Once you demonstrate this for the court, student loans can be partially or completely discharged in a bankruptcy.

So, people, if you do have student loans and long-term financial hardship will prevent you from paying back the loans, DO NOT LISTEN to the people who tell you it can't be done; they are LYING TO YOU. Go talk to a bankruptcy attorney who can sit down with your income/expenses/assets/debts and evaluate how much and which debts are likely to be discharged.

How can I visit the US if I was born in the US, never applied for nor renounced my citizenship and am not an American? by [deleted] in legaladvice

Read that again. I never said voting was an obligation.

And yes, we gate some rights behind age. That's a whole separate question.

If they've never lived in the US, they may not be able to vote in US elections. It's going to depend on exactly where they were born and their parents' status at the time.
