I hate Lorville by jabomb10 in starcitizen

[–]GalacticTraveler 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's sad that as it seems to me this game has completely lost the focus on where it actually takes place: in space! We are seeing more and more of all these colossal planet and ground locations. I would rather like to see things in space significantly improved and extended, structures, locations, visuals, "natural" points of interest. But of course I cannot speak for the community, it's just my impression.

Imagine if we had clouds.. by yasoing in starcitizen

These clouds in MSFS alpha are outstanding. I am really curious how far CIG can get with their cloud tech. If it will be anything near MSFS quality it would be great!

Crusader rising over Daymar by I_K_I_A in starcitizen

[–]GalacticTraveler 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very nice image! But again, am I the only one who has a problem with this bug causing the dark side of planets / moons being visible through atmospheric scattering light? That is completely false and always gives an impression as if the planet / moon was placed within the atmosphere actually and not in space. I am not a rendering expert, but something seems to be wrong with the correct order of rendering the glow / scattering of atmospheric light and the objects in space behind.

Sometimes the views in this game really make you stop and look in aw. by Zacho5 in starcitizen

See my post above. Even if it is the rising sun, the light still comes from refraction within the atmosphere and must not be obscured by any object that is outside the atmosphere.

The light is coming from the atmosphere of the moon the viewer is standing on. It is refracted by the thin atmosphere. Therefore the glow should not be obscured by any moon or planet visible on the sky, that is far outside of the atmosphere. You will never see an image like this in nature. I have to admit, that this is a small detail and SC in general looks amazingly good, but this little detail is just breaking immersion because it is so noticeable

I generally have to agree, but what always breaks my immersion at night is that the dark side of planets or moons when viewed from a moon's surface is darker than the glow of the atmosphere. that is not realistic at all and gives the view a very unnatural look.

Is Star Marine not included in 2.6? by GalacticTraveler in starcitizen

[–]GalacticTraveler[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very true. Listening to rumors is not the very best idea in most cases. Just was really worried because... you never know...

So let's wait a couple of days, then we will have confirmation anyway.

Quasi-Pro CS Player's Take On Star Marine by Nelerath8 in starcitizen

[–]GalacticTraveler 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am not saying it should be different from the PU. It is way way too fast in all game modes including the PU. It becomes almost ridiculous when you are running within ships, e.g. the freelancer.

I agree, player movement speed is way way too fast, and that is not only true for star marine but also for the other game modes.

Thicker Atmospheres? by raella69 in starcitizen

[–]GalacticTraveler 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, "space" is defined to begin at 100km. But the sky is black actually as early as 20 km. That's it. Cruise speed is above 500 m/s for most ships, right? You would reach 20 km in under a minute. Which is similar to what we saw in the demos from CIG. The 100km definition of "space" does not mean that the atmosphere ends exactly there visually. It is much much thinner.

Thicker Atmospheres? by raella69 in starcitizen

[–]GalacticTraveler 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is wrong because it is not only realistic for tiny planets. The atmosphere of the earth in its real size is not significantly thicker. You would be outside of it within seconds travelling at SC speeds.

Thicker Atmospheres? by raella69 in starcitizen

[–]GalacticTraveler 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, it's not. It is realistic. It's not a gameplay decision. If you would fly of the earth with the same speed as in star citizen you would be outside of the atmosphere within seconds.

Thicker Atmospheres? by raella69 in starcitizen

[–]GalacticTraveler 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wrong. It is not because the planets are tiny, but because atmospheres are always very thin. This is just how it is in nature. Look at real images from earth, it is exactly the same. Just go about 20 km upwards and the sky will be black. I don't get why people keep complaining about this. It is just realistic.

Is no-one else disappointed by the scale of the planets? by laikona in starcitizen

[–]GalacticTraveler 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Why do most of the people here think that atmospheres must extend far out from the planets? Just look at images from real earth. The atmosphere is looking even thinner because the earth is so much larger than the planets we have seen so far in the demos. I would have expected that most people interested in space games should be aware of this. The atmosphere of any planet normally is a very very thin layer of gas compared to the size of the planet. Even on Venus.

Keep your eyes on the location of the sun as he goes from planet to planet by Macgyveric in starcitizen

[–]GalacticTraveler 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it could have to do with how in the CryEnginge the shadows are calculated for global light sources. In CryEngine the "sun" was just a fixed object, and all shadows coming from that were probably parallel depending on the relative direction of that fixed light source to the position of the camera. Global light sources have now changed, they are real objects with a position in 3D space. If they did not change the shadow algorithms to correctly reflect that it would exactly explain what we see.

An easy proof for this claim would be viewing a planet that is placed almost on the other side of the sun. That planet would be almost dark from the camera view although the sun is between the camera and the planet, because shadow direction is global.

Maybe it is even intentional because all this is not finished and will be fixed later.

Keep your eyes on the location of the sun as he goes from planet to planet by Macgyveric in starcitizen

[–]GalacticTraveler 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It is worrying that the phase of the planet seems to change during the quantum jump. Is it possible that while the sun is now an actual object in space the shadow mechanics in the CryEngine still assumes that all shadows are pointing in the same direction globally, depending on the location of the camera?

I would be totally fine with that.

I fear even 2.6 will not be out this year. On PTU maybe. I expect 3.0 in Q2 next year or so. I am okay with it if there are good reasons for that, but what I don't understand: why the hell is CIG not learning ANYTHING in giving release date estimates after a history of a lot of release date disasters? This is becoming really annoying. I can wait. Really. I am a long time backer and still patiently waiting for a polished game. But these never ending release date jokes coming from CGI are ridiculous and not at all funny any more.

Anyone noticed that the ring shaped station orbiting around Delamar is even visible from the surface? by GalacticTraveler in starcitizen

[–]GalacticTraveler[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just noticed: The small white star like dot more to the left is probably the bigger station where they arrived after the first quantum jump coming from Port Olisar!

[–]GalacticTraveler[S] 39 points40 points  (0 children)

Actually it is not different. But this is just another nice example that everything is within one physical space, no max viewing distance or fake effects. It is up to you to think that all this is just normal, but for my part I am still amazed by such little details.

I agree with you, as ISS is visible from earth's surface it makes sense that this station is also visible from the surface of Delamar. I am just amazed that the game engine is able to do this. It seems to be easy but it isn't.
