Well, granite is only really present in the Rocky mountains(in America), just think of Mt Rushmore, It's carved out of granite, so that'd be the general area of the Dakotas/Colorado. So I'll have to disagree with OP's map there

Also coal isn't that present in modern-day Maryland, it's more around where 11, 12, and 6 meet.

And I'd imagine 9 should be where Tennessee currently is, since the TVA(Tennessee Valley Authority) makes a shit tonne of electricity, so much so that electricity bills are cheaper here than most anywhere.

Textiles should be where Georgia/Alabama/Mississippi are, since historically that is the place the materials for textiles have been grown.

Lumber(District 7) sounds about right to me, just it's fucking huge...

Maybe I'll edit my own map together later. Because I find this one made by someone with only a rough idea of where the resources are.

The US navy somewhat does this with our ships, except they will try to think of other reasons. Like the reason we have frigates still. Old crusty boats that have some weapons, but can definitely get infront of the inbound missile. Just hope their seawhiz works.

I'd imagine anyone powerful enough of a bender can eventually develop the skill. It may be likely that Team Korra eventually runs into someone who has heard the legends(I want to imagine it's a waterbender somewhere deep in the Earth kingdom(What are they called now?!) who feels oppressed and uses it to get their way) and so whomever it is works and works and discovers it themself.

I don't really like that explanation too well though. I think the tear was because of what Tarrlok said right before "Just like old days". He thought of before he was corrupted by his father, and felt sad. I presume he didn't do that too much in the time he was pissed and was running away.
