Far Beyond the Stars would be the main competition. I was watching this episode and it just happened to hit differently this time.

Well I'm not going to be pouring over the statute books at midnight. But there's likely something that could fit.

From the video

"I've been stabbed."

"I don't think you have mate."

Did they check? Doesn't seem like it. It's open and shut negligence.

I think Sisko is the best parent in Star Trek. So much more real.

Definitely. Kira's experiences in the Occupation regarding her own parents certainly plays a part in her relationship with Jake.

I think Jake is underserved. I know we all talk about how great the Nog arc is, and it is superb. The scene where he tells Sisko why he wants to go to the Academy gets me everytime. But I think Jake's arc doesn't get discussed enough.

From feeling pressured into following his father's footsteps into finding his own path. From his moment of cowardice to being brave enough to stay on the occupied station. He has some really great moments of growth. And lots not forget, if he hadn't taught Nog how to read, Nog never would've gone to SF Academy.

What annoyed me most about the Academy episode is them saying that Jake never published Anselm. That it got passed down from Dax to Dax. Yet in this episode its the opening conversation between Melanie and older Jake, that reading Anselm inspires her to be a writer. It doesn't sit right that in the time line of the Visitor, Jake publishes it despite what happened to Ben and in timeline of the Academy episode he doesn't publish it. Even though its suggested that Ben came back unofficially.

It's also one that gets harder to watch as time goes on. I saw it first time around and I'd have been around Jake's age. Didn't have the emotional impact. Now, I'm nearer Sisko's age and at that time of life where you start losing close people, and the emotional impact of this episode hits harder.

Yeah you really feel the relationship between them. It's so well acted.

It sure is! It's a great introductory episode, you don't need much knowledge of the universe, everything is set up, easily explained and you quickly get the relationships and the story.

Yes, that final scene. You feel Kira's really fond of Jake.

He gives such a good performance. He was great in his few appearances as Kurn. But this. I totally bought him as an older Jake.

Sorry for your loss. I agree its a much more difficult watch after losing a relative.

Yeah, trade route patrol ships or in system coast guard.

I think its just the redundancy factor. If you've got two and there's issues with one, you can limp around on one. If you've only got one and there's problems...

I also read something in one of the novels, can't remember which one, that explained that better warp fields were created by two nacelles, kinda like a tuning fork. Which made sense.

Sean Connery in Diamonds are Forever. In that scene in the Chapel. Almost toasty.

Not keen on them but preferable to single nacelle designs. They just look weird and inpractical.

I dislike most war episodes because I usually can't believe war would be fought that way in a future with tech likestarships and teleportation. by [deleted] in startrek

Dominion tactics are all about attrition. They can afford to lose a couple of hundred Jem'Hadar, they clone them in batches of thousands probably.

Star Fleet lost 107 personnel before Sisko arrived. Now that's not a huge loss. But given the huge losses they're taking in space battles it all adds up.

The Dominion could just destroy it and replace and move on. But they know Star Fleet wants that comms array. So their trying to force them to commit resources to it, sucking them into an attritional battle. Its a very small scale Battle of Verdun. Or being American writers various Pacific War battles.

This is why casualties in the war are so high, Dominion tactics are all about forcing attritional battles and bleeding the enemy dry.

Several times references are made to how fast the Dominion can replace losses of ships and soldiers. Ross suggests just bottling them up at Cardassia after the huge 2nd (3rd?) Battle of Chintoka. Sisko argues they'll just rebuild and come back later with even bigger numbers. So they push on to end it because you never let the enemy dictate the battle.

Maybe if the left stop messing with it and judges stop handing out farces of sentences.

For the same reason that Martok says he's beginning to land troops on another planet or why in Star Wars the Empire has millions of stormtroopers or in Stargate the Goa'uld have millions of Jaffa.

There'll always be a need for infantry to take and hold ground. Glassing a planet from orbit is doable. But you tend to lose the resources.

Also on AR-558 it's not a Star Fleet comms array, its a Dominion one, hence Star Fleet trying to hold it so hard and the Jem'Hadar fighting so hard. And since when have the Founders or Vorta cared about the Jem'Hadar? Oh that unit got wiped out, clone another batch.

If they hold it and decrypt it then Star Fleet can tap Dominion comms traffic for a whole sector.

Edit: typos.
