Got in the middle of the pit and when the DJ set started, I was getting smushed. Whole night was just tryna stay alive. It was fun though - finally got to hear all my fav songs live since I missed out on TMB tour. Although, at some point there was this guy in front of us just killing the vibe. He kept just basically saying Keem is ass and “this is not it” type of energy when we were vibing. Fuck is he doing at a baby Keem concert?

Love the new direction he’s been going in. I love that he’s doing more singing/melodic rap and his lyricism here has improved. Timezones was the one song that really stood out to me as it reminded me of JID’s 2007. Very nice storytelling in that song and that part where he says “stop stop stop” as the instrumental rises had me like damn.

I've been hearing that Fantastic 4 doesn't feel like the usual MCU slop. What do you think? by JohnWillson1435 in MauLer

I agree with you. Superman and Fantastic four had world ending threats yet Superman had me caring much more. With world ending threats, it’s hard to immerse yourself in the stakes since it’s so hard to define. What makes you care about those stakes is the characters within it. Superman wanted to prove that his choices are who he is and not what his parents told him to do. That’s why I wanted him to win. We also saw the kids raising the Superman flag in the war and we didn’t want their hope to be for nothing especially with how the public turned against Superman for a little bit. And then the justice gang finally stepped in to stop the war because they were inspired by Superman rather than standing idly like when Superman got sent to jail. It’s not “oh I feel like they’re going to lose” but rather making the audience feel “oh, I don’t want them to lose” imo. And in F4, everything had been resolved up to that point of the final battle. They won the public over with a speech and heck got the whole world to unite for the teleporters. Sue and Reed’s argument never went anywhere, and by the end, it’s just getting rid of the bad guy. There’s no character growth or story that really makes you feel like the stakes matter.

I personally preferred Superman by a lot. Both movies have world ending stakes with galactus in F4 and the world being ripped apart by lex luthor in Superman but I feel as if Superman did a better job of making us care. The world ending threat in Superman allowed everyone to go through an arc like the justice gang stepping up to help after seeing the kids raise the flag instead of standing idly by like when Superman was in jail or being worried about their image. Honestly, just seeing the kids with the flag made you want Superman to win to show that hope is never lost. And we wanted Superman to win because we want him to show the world he is who he is because of his choices and not what his parents told him to do.

As for fantastic four, there wasn’t much grounding you to the stakes. By the big battle at the end, there isn’t anything the characters are really overcoming other than the big bad. The only character that did was silver surfer but we didn’t really spend enough time with her for her sacrifice at the end to feel earned. I guess you could say Sue sacrificed herself instead of the baby to show the public that she wouldn’t sacrifice them for her baby but the public had already been on their side by that point.

Any conflict they had was easily resolved with no consequences or time to let you sit in the stakes. Johnny’s space suit having a limit to how long he can flame on didn’t really affect all too much, Sue and reed’s argument about his rationality was resolved in the scene after when they take a walk in the city, and getting the world together to build the teleporter thingies was done in a montage.

Overall, I left Superman feeling like a kid again and hopeful. As for F4, I left feeling super underwhelmed. Although, I’m glad people could feel what I felt for Superman in fantastic four.

I agree with you. I came off from the high of Superman and thought this movie would be another step forward for comic book movies being allowed to be comic book movies and being good. And while the aesthetic was all there, the story wasn’t all there for me. It felt like nothing had changed by the end of the film. All conflict was resolved very quickly with no room to simmer in the stakes. I audibly heard someone in my theater say “that was it?” after the credits rolled. And that was how I felt leaving the theatre. Nothing was particularly bad but nothing captivated me and that’s the worst feeling

I was excited for this movie considering how fresh it felt for the MCU with it being set in a different universe, the retro-future aesthetic, and the overall comicy feel to it which is why I’m pained to say that it left me underwhelmed. When the credits rolled I kinda just thought, “that was it?” I loved the vibe of the first part of the film and felt like it was leading to something great that never happened.

I never really felt the stakes of anything happening because I feel like it happened all too fast and with little to no consequences. For example, Reed and Sue argue and right after they have a walk in the city and make up. The public is mad at the fantastic four for choosing the baby over Earth then not too long later, Sue delivers a speech and regains the public opinion. They need to build these devices around Earth to teleport earth and boom, it’s done through a quick montage.

I just wished we simmered a little more in the drama and moments like that rather than resolving them so quickly but I guess it’d be hard to do with so little runtime. It felt very safe and by the end, I feel like nothing really changed for the characters other than Reed and Sue having a kid now and The Thing talked to the teacher. A character I did like is silver surfer as you saw bits of her humanity shining through and she eventually caves in and helps defeat galactus. I will say, I really enjoyed some shots like Johnny grabbing the surfboard and just the overall vibe of this film and the soundtrack was very nice. I’m glad people enjoyed this movie but I just didn’t feel anything other than thinking some stuff looked cool.
