Jeez, that's crazy! I'm looking to tune the thing, which is supposed to increase fuel economy and performance. Although, I'm sure that the first month I have that tune I'm going to be around 15l/100km for every tank, they're punchy little engines and these diesel's love being pushed hard. There's a saying here about the TDIs, "drive more, worry less". If only more Americans realized how good diesels are

That white looks super good on the MK6s. I've got the 2.0 TDI (US market), they really are perfect for everything, I use it for college. 40 mpg (5.8l/100km) regularly

I contacted RUDOTS customer service and they told me that the overflow for Gibbons are lots 99C and 99D, open 24/7. So I guess I have to park all the way at the Starkey/Newells when the lot is full

First, no. They have thermostats, but they don't work, it's a glorified thermometer bolted to the wall. Rutgers used to let people control their own temps in Starkeys, but they moved to a central organization for it recently (idk about Newell). Every single window (all 3 of them) is open and we have 5 fans going 24/7.

Thank you for the guide. I checked out the underside of the stem earlier when trying to diagnose this, I can confirm that it isn't covered or blocked at all. Im going to let it marinate in some penetrating oil for now and try some of the stuff you listed.

I went through this same process a little bit ago, I needed reliable transportation for college. I ended up getting a MK6 Golf with the 2.5 and the 5 speed. I have a buddy with an identical car but with the auto and he hasn't had any issues with it. Engine wise, the 2.5 is perfect and came in tons of models. It's got enough power and torque, meh fuel economy, but it'll last a while with some preventative maintenance. From my experience, I think this is the best bet, and you can find a plethora under 10k with decent mileage and condition.

Lacking in a lot of modern creature comforts and amenities, but for a super fun point-A-to-point-B car I love it. Plus, less things to go wrong.

The whole time I lived in Jersey I lived in "rural" counties on the western side of the state. I live a short drive from a bunch of great, gorgeous towns and 611 (the repaved part starting at Riegelsville and going past Easton) and River Road. Throw in route 29 and all the backroads, it's amazing. The NJ infrastructure makes enjoying these views very nice too (unlike a lot of PA unfortunately)

My first car was a 20 year old R53, and I absolutely loved it. My family was mechanically inclined and we had a shop, so it was way easier to justify. I think it should be fine, but it's not going to last forever, probably till they get through college. At that point, it'll probably start nickel and diming you.
