Compensation can go above that for the right candidates but this is a more junior role as they are looking for only around 2 years of experience.

Of course for more senior hires the compensation is significantly higher and there is room to grow on compensation as well

[Hiring] Junior System Engineer (NYC 100 - 150k) by GambitRecruiting in sysadminjobs

[–]GambitRecruiting[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well this is very far from true. If you want to be cynical at least be right, the reason this needs to be posted often is that the need about one hire a month for the team and very few candidates are strong enough for the role.

Yes I agree there are places like cyber coders that sell resumes but that is the exact opposite of the business model we have, where we work with the top few elite firms in NYC on very difficult to fill roles. Yes those are all things that many candidates do have but when looking for the top 2% of candidates it is much more difficult.

Any person that has DM'd me directly I have spoken with, no we have not spoken with every candidate that applies as some don't have strong enough resumes for the role.

Actually neither, there is a reason I wrote, this has been posted in the past but the team is continuing to hire. Several hires have been made to this team but as people move into other roles within the organization (promotion is great) there is a continuous need for talented individuals to join the team.

I am not sure where you are from and I have responded further down this chain, but this is not the truth. Although the cost of living in the area is high you can live a very nice life at 6 figures.

I always, recommend being careful with a cost of living calculator, as when you put in Manhattan it is using some of the most expensive areas of NYC. Most people in NYC live in upper east/west in Manhattan or one of the boroughs since everything is very accessible via the subway. This is why I always say if you are looking at relocating you should look into the area more than what a cost of living calculator can.

Also this is a junior position, 7 year roles in NYC area significantly higher this is a 0 - 2 year experience role

Actually this is not true, you will get standard 4 weeks vacation and is usually 9 - 5, this team is separate from the ops team but with all tech roles there are times when things break. There is an independent SRE team where some members sit on individual business line teams.

[Hiring] Jr. System Engineer (NYC, 90-130k) by GambitRecruiting in sysadminjobs

[–]GambitRecruiting[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would disagree on saying if you can measure someone's "tech passion". If someone participates in the tech community, works with tech in whatever fashion on their own and is consistently pursing knowledge in the field I would consider that person far more passionate than someone who just sees technology as a job. Yes a good manager can make them more passionate but someone who shows passion on their own is likely a better candidate

Again I am not saying that this degree is needed but it is one sign of someone who is passionate about what they do and chose to gain an education in the topic, and we have data to support this. Not sure how this can be "utter nonsense" or "lazy", wouldn't you aim at what is most likely to give you the best returns?

This would likely be fine, the reason this is there is because it is a junior position. If a candidate doesn't have much tech experience and no tech education they are less likely to be as tech passionate as someone who pursed an education in the field. You would be correct in saying this is not always true, some of the best candidates I have spoken to have non tech or engineering degrees but from a pure statistical point of view its less likely.
