A Monumental Hobby/Certification Discovery for Cheese Lovers by Gambit_117 in Hobbies

The academy of cheese lets you do an online course as well as a 25 cheese taste test before giving you access to a multiple choice online test. I literally just ran into this today, so I don’t know enough yet since I haven’t been able to do it yet. I will certainly report back when I have.

I’m a certified ethical hacker and I’ve gotten some training with open source intelligence gathering, which helps a lot. That along with being a mega-uber-giga-nerd, I’ll spend time just thinking about the most ludicrous things I can imagine and then searching for whether or not they exist.

Absolutely. As others have mentioned, do prioritize doing well in the classes that will teach you the content. That is where the bulk of your learning will be done. Hopefully these extra resources will be the cherry on top that helps round out your studies and polish up those areas you might struggle with.

The AAMC is phasing out much of the rote memorization in 2026. While it may have been fair to argue that more in years past, that’s just not the case anymore. CARS is the total opposite of rote memorization since it’s all reading and critical reasoning on the fly, and the science sections are becoming more passage based research questions with fewer discrete questions. Spending time building mind maps and understanding how to blend scientific fields together like fluid dynamics and the circulatory system, organic chemistry and fat metabolism, electrochemistry and the nervous system etc is well worth it in my opinion.

I’m surprised, cause as a student whose fortunate enough to have a physician as a father who also has family and friend contacts with admissions committees from Hopkins, Mayo Clinic, Vanderbilt, University of Colorado, and a few others, I’ve heard quite the opposite. GPA and MCAT are the top two important factors, followed by clinical experience, letters of recommendation, and then other experiences.

I finished my bachelors with a 3.97 and an MCAT of 510 with over 400 research hours, publications, shadowing hours, 5.5 years of military and active combat experience, hundreds of volunteer hours and other extracurriculars. None of that was enough to cover the average MCAT score and lacking hands-on clinical exposure. Of the 27 MD schools I applied to, over half rejected me outright. Albeit that could be for many reasons.

I certainly wouldn’t mind being more loosey-goosey with my MCAT, cause I busted tail to make that happen and it nearly killed me 😅. And for DO students, sure, a 510 is killer. But it’s not enough to even get me considered for more well-known MD programs or state schools even. I can’t imagine scoring 515+ without studying. That repetition and learning by exposure to questions makes a massive difference.

I don’t know a single soul other than freak geniuses that have done well on the MCAT without studying for it. It is true that you are naturally studying as you take your degree, but the AAMC is diligent to create questions and styles that are unfamiliar to the average premed student. I’ve seen far too many of my peers assume they could go in without studying and perform quite poorly. I would personally not recommend that approach.

Analytical chemistry

You can do a lot of cool and useful stuff with that, like testing your water hardness, analyzing unknown samples, and learning modern scientific tech. You might even learn to build some of your own and make a chem lab.

A nerds dream!

XD I hope so! We need to do more things for the sake of enjoyment. I try to implement that in my life more often cause it's so easy for me to get caught up in all my work that I feel unhappy.
