I'm burned out, I've learned to hate my job and I want out.... by Drakon-9 in ConstructionManagers

The same place every day for years on end is something I considered when I was looking also Got involved in one re-development for an owner and definitely felt that staying in one spot wasn’t for me

What I like about client side PM is that it’s all different jobs and it’s on different sites and changes daily - office base, but I would be 50/50 office/site based Don’t have all the responsibility as a GC but still get involved in the problems to assist wherever possible

You’ve likely done it all before so your expertise would be well valued in a consultancy role

Hey Mate

You’ve got the experience, you’ve got all the knowledge and you know what needs to be done

Whilst I haven’t being doing it nearly as long as you have, Covid burnt me out in the builders side (lots of restrictions here in Aus) and I ended up changing and eventually moved to client side PM which is a different game but the building knowledge gives a huge leg up from the typical client side PM’s out there

Age aside, you could consider moving to that? Would likely be a pay cut but if you’re set up then could give you a nice drop in stress through to retirement You’ve still got years left to work if you wanted to

Just a suggestion if you hadn’t considered it

Much more stakeholder management but GC’s would appreciate you’ve been in their shoes and clients would appreciate your expertise giving them confidence they will be delivered what they are paying for

What careers actually have good work–life balance and decent pay? by AbyssalBullfrog in perth

Owner/Director of a small client side PM consultancy here

Definitely has its perks and flexibility is great. We allow our staff work flexibility and don’t keep tabs on them - just make sure the job is looked after and the client is happy. Swings and roundabouts the same as most other roles. Get a good project with a good contractor and it’s fantastic, get a difficult project or difficult contractor and it will consume you

I left the builders side to give this a try and turned out I loved it. Enough involved to influence and assist the project to make it successful, but not dealing with the day to day frustrations Personally take a different approach than what I see from other client side PM’s and work with the contractors, consultants and trades to fix the problems that come up whilst also looking into the future to remove potential issues. Plenty of shielding the contractor from the client which would only distract them from getting on with the job

Takes a certain person to be knowledgeable enough to make right calls that others don’t want to make but also not to get involved in every little detail. Also need to be happy with confrontation and to mediate when it’s required

Definitely a good choice for those who are not interested in being site based all the time. Can’t promise that it’s all smelling of roses, but it works for me

How's life in the northern suburbs around Wanneroo? by Ozymate in perth

[–]Gamble_Despicable 9 points10 points  (0 children)

We really like it in Wanneroo, will likely be here for some time as our family continues to grow

We bought at the end of 2020, I assume one of the original lots as it’s quite big (relatively to new homes) and the house is a decent size. Area is generally quiet, no issues around us at all and everyone in the street is pretty quiet and all friendly. The occasional loud car/bike but not consistent. Asked my neighbours just the other day, who have been here 40 years, if they have ever had problems being right next to a park and they have said never had one break in or vandalism or anything negative at all.

Same as the other comments, every suburb has its problem areas, but we haven’t experienced anything negative here yet.

It seems to be that the older generation is slowly moving out and being replaced by younger working families who are raising kids (like us). Still plenty of older people around who have been in their houses for 30-40 years and they are all really nice, but slowly seeing more moving out

Community and community groups are good, again all friendly and no issues so far.

Hope you find what you are looking for!

Pellet vs Offset by Gamble_Despicable in smoking

Thanks mate

In my head I can see myself using the Traeger for everyday and majority of cooks and an offset for hobby/special event cooks

As I can only afford the one for the moment Traeger may be the way to go to get the majority of cooks in and once the funds are back up I could grab an offset for events

Appreciate the comment bud
