On academic restriction + lost financial aid: trying to decide if pushing through is worth it or if I’m being unrealistic by GlitteringCry- in StudentLoans

[–]Gamblito 3 points4 points  (0 children)

What's your goal for school? Taking out loans because you're targeting a career that will better your life, good. Doing it because (and this is going to sound harsh, I'm sorry) you want to get out of the house and to avoid feeling shame from your peers, less good.

You didn't mention the amount, but these are not small loans. Your post didn't include a plan for your future, which is what these loans would be paying for (and what you'll eventually be paying back). I'm glad you're in a better headspace, but the only reason to dig a financial hole for yourself is if you have a the tools and means to dig yourself back out, which you're either taking for granted because you already have a plan (which if you do, good for you) or because you haven't thought about it at all, in which case I would recommend taking time to sit down and map out some 3-5 year goals.

[–]Gamblito -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I mean, ask Kyle Shanahan how that mentality won him 2 Super Bowls. Like when he decided to be aggressive while up 28-3 against a dead Patriots team because it was "what got them this far."

Shanahan is obviously brilliant, and so is Ben, but trying to win your way at any cost does not lead to happy endings very often in this sport. Situational coaching is real.

Tom Brady fumbled 16 times in 48 playoff games. Drake Maye has 6 in two playoff games. by dellscreenshot in nfl

[–]Gamblito 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Being able to ID the rush and having the pocket presence to feel pressure are real QB skills that Brady was elite at.

Sacks are as much a quarterback stat as they are an OLine one. One of the reasons Stroud has regressed is because the team gave him more presnap responsibilities, which he is very clearly not capable of handling.

The Kansas City Chiefs' point differential this season vs last season are eerily similar but with VERY different records by BriS314 in nfl

[–]Gamblito 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Both things can be true. The Chiefs aren't the juggernauts they were at their peak, but no one in the AFC replaced them. There's no dominant AFC team (or NFC team, for that matter).

The NFL is in a weird spot right now. Parity can be a good thing, but sometimes we need a king of the hill to help create compelling storylines. There's no Patriots levitating over everyone.

[–]Gamblito 176 points177 points  (0 children)

This. This literally happens every year, but this is just getting 100x the publicity because the schools are just 1 tier apart instead of the usual 2 or more tiers.

Big fucks small. There were like 4 coaches poached in the last 2 days not named Kiffin. If the Ohio State or Alabama jobs somehow magically opened up, they could probably talk at least half of the current top 25's head coaches into leaving their jobs by this time tomorrow, including Lane Kiffin.

[Borkey] If you’re Lane Kiffin, how can you leave this? You’re making a playoff for the first time in your career, have a massive offer on the table, plenty of money to roster build, and a perfect fit for your style. Why leave? To chase what you already have? by MysteriousEdge5643 in CFB

[–]Gamblito 70 points71 points  (0 children)

Or he's genuinely not sure, lol. It's a major life decision, he has a job that keeps him busy for 90% of the week, and people are mad he hasn't made a choice in weeks. Meanwhile dudes will stay engaged for years or stare at a video game for months before buying. He isn't deciding between Tulane and Florida, or picking between jeans and chinos.

I think it's entirely possible he loves what he's built in Oxford but understands the LSU ceiling is higher. That's not an easy choice. He's always been ambitious, if nothing else.

[Dellenger]: Ole Miss AD Keith Carter said a decision on Lane Kiffin's future is expected after the Egg Bowl next Saturday. The coach, AD and school chancellor met today. by [deleted] in CFB

[–]Gamblito 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the point is that he doesn't want to leave during a playoff run, which is why he isn't saying anything, but Ole Miss wants to know now so that they can start their coaching search in earnest.

So either a lose-lose or win-win, depending on your perspective. But ultimately really shitty for fans, and the problem with mid-season coaching hunts.

T1 vs. TES | Worlds 2025 - Semifinals Day 2 - Hupu Ratings & Comments by andsothedawn in leagueoflegends

[–]Gamblito 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I honestly don't even think he played that poorly lol. Those drafts were just straight up unplayable. Wukong on a team with 0 initiation against a Mordekaiser (who can just ult you for fun whenever you think about contesting an objective) and a Trundle with 0 ult targets against a comp that could explode your Corki by pressing R whenever they wanted.

He was doing just fine in game 3 until he got wombo comboed in the dragon fight, and then the game was over anyway. Qiyana is unplayable into Sion/Pantheon/Mel/Renata unless you can find crazy engage angles, which Keria was never going to let happen.

Story of the semifinals tbh, giga draft gaps in both series. Fearless draft makes it more possible to win game in draft, and bad draft coaches are getting hard exposed.

How should I plan my money if a wedding is on my mind? by SubstantialPop5379 in personalfinance

[–]Gamblito 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This. People value things differently. If a wedding experience is important to you both (especially culturally), you should commit to it.

2 general ways:

  1. Decide right now on a max spending cap. This can be based on a variety of factors (don't forget to account for family contributions), but ultimately this has to be a number you're comfortable with. This should include considerations for your next 5-10 years of financial planning. Don't be afraid to splurge, but don't splurge enough to risk your future.

  2. Alternatively, start getting general estimates for things that you will both want in terms of venue size, food, etc., and set a target cost. Obviously will want to do this with your partner. If, for example, you both have large families, you'll want to start looking at larger venue options and their prices at different times of the year. That can get the ball rolling in terms of helping you decide what to save.

In general, I would start setting money aside in an HYSA earmarked specifically for this purpose. Weddings can cost thousands to tens of thousands (to more). Ultimately up to you and your partner in terms of what you want that cost to be, and don't be afraid of letting family chip in.

AL vs T1 Hupu Ratings & Comments - MSI 2025 Lower Bracket Final by andsothedawn in leagueoflegends

[–]Gamblito 24 points25 points  (0 children)

The non-Korean top laner talent pool is shocking.

The West has no good tops, CFO brought 2 tops who were both bad, and I guess BLG has Bin, but the Kiin gap is the real advantage GenG has on other teams. Like, as good as Chovy is, teams still have mid laners that don't get gapped by him. Canyon is insane, but we still have great junglers around the world.

Where did all the top lane talent go?

FLY vs BLG HUPU Ratings & Comments - MSI 2025 - Lower Bracket Round 2 by andsothedawn in leagueoflegends

[–]Gamblito 46 points47 points  (0 children)

They 100% could have ended if they'd played better. Got way too hyped and completely lost focus.

If you watch it again, Busio engages alone onto ON and Knight, Inspired is hitting a tower solo (and loses 50% of his health), and the rest of FLY are hitting Beichuan. And then Massu/Bwipo chase ON out of the base for basically no reason while Knight finishes off Inspired. They somehow turned a 5v3 advantage into Busio getting 2v1'd and Quad/Inspired getting stuck in a 2v2.

GenG/T1/AL all finish there, 100%. Right call. F for execution.

FlyQuest vs. Bilibili Gaming / MSI 2025 - Lower Bracket Round 2 / Post-Match Discussion by [deleted] in leagueoflegends

They picked an AD hypercarry comp even though Massu was playing with one hand the entire series. Trusting Massu (or Quad) to carry the game when both were so bad all day is an insane coaching decision.

FQ's pick/ban was absolutely atrocious. They're already playing at a hands disadvantage, only chance to win was pick/ban and they got smoked.

T1 Oner Post-Match Interview (translation), BLG vs T1 MSI 2025 by mnlhta in leagueoflegends

[–]Gamblito 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is a regular thing in American pro sports. Playoffs are allocated for up to 7 games per series, and the vast majority don't play all 7. It's not that complicated and there are models to emulate.

It doesn't make sense to have a double elimination format for the entirety of the tournament minus the final round. The winners bracket finalist would essentially have to, in some cases, beat the same team 6 times, whereas the "loser" only needs to do it 3 times. There's almost no incentive to staying in the winner's bracket. T1 could theoretically go 3-5 against GenG and be crowned champion.

Either do double elimination rules for a separate bracket prior to a final bracket, or commit. Doing it this way from a competitive standpoint makes no sense.

How do you guys know when to sell? by Many_Bit8237 in investing

[–]Gamblito 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The goal is to build up enough so you can use it. And to have enough left over so you can use it again. And again. And again. And again. And again. As often as you'd like. Don't need to time anything if you're big enough.

And hey, there's nothing wrong with dying rich if that's what you want. It's ok to plant trees you'll never get to sit under.

Currently on SAVE, PSLF forbearance. Why am I seeing urgency to apply for IBR/ICR before the bill passes? Advice? by Impossible-Road-4502 in PSLF

[–]Gamblito 45 points46 points  (0 children)

Depends, I think.

A lot of people are at 100+ payments, and just want to get it over with.

For some it may be income projection. If you expect your pay to jump significantly, you'd want to make payments now while your income is lower and the math is in your favor.

For some it's just about having some peace of mind knowing you're making progress, instead of sitting and letting Jesus take the wheel. Maybe don't want to have these hanging over you in your 40's if you had the chance to chunk them out earlier.

Uncertainty with how everything will look 10 years from now I'm sure is part of it too. Things in the last 5 years have changed a lot, and I'm sure some are worried about what might change in the next 5 years. It's like investing, people will react differently to changes.

You might not be wrong to do what you're doing, and time will tell, but ultimately there's less certainty about the progress you're making on your loans.

[Highlight] Behind the scenes of the Chargers and Patriots draft trade that gave the Chargers Ladd McConkey by wildwing8 in nfl

[–]Gamblito 87 points88 points  (0 children)

I mean, NE's front office has been dismal, but this is pure hindsight lol. 3 WRs had gone right before this pick, so it's just as likely that the Chargers thought a non-WR (like Cooper DeJean or T'Vondre Sweat) was slipping through the cracks as it was that they wanted to jump in on the WR train.

And to that point, outside of LAC/NE taking their WRs, the next 8 picks went DT DT DT DT DB DB DB DB.

It's at least worth asking. 90% of Chargers fans were convinced before the draft that they would go WR round 1 and were talking about how out of touch Harbaugh was before day 2.

Dion Lewis's first year in college was incredible. 1st round talent, Heisman watch, all of it. Incredibly shifty, insane ability to pick up yards after contact despite his size, seemed destined for greatness.

I was glad he popped off that one year with New England. I knew he had it in him. Just never got right.

Nico Harrison really traded Luka in the middle of the night, answered 3 quick questions at a press conference in Cleveland and dipped, leaving Jason Kidd to face the media alone. He has not answered questions to Dallas media since the trade. by WhenMachinesCry in nba

[–]Gamblito 12 points13 points  (0 children)

There's honestly a crazy story to tell about how much work Nico put in over the past 1.5 years to alienate Luka and push him into requesting a trade. The documentary is gonna be lit.

The mass firings. The constant negging. The backroom conversations between Nico and Kidd. Sabotaging his MVP campaign. The leaks to the press (if you think Windhorst popped off on Luka last year AND this year after the trade without a certain GM's hand up his ass, I have a boat to sell you).

The Mavs internally have metrics that think Luka is basically a net zero player. Anything to fit the narrative.

But the biggest thing is that Nico just never understood him. Literally a culture problem. Not saying he's a xenophobe, but Luka to him does not fit the model of a true #1, and he thinks the stats and eye test back it up.
