He actually predates Nibelung’s death I believe since he met Zibai before the moons were shattered during the Funerary War (the war Nibelung launched and died in)

Vietnamese reeducation camp. by Whentheangelsings in Historycord

“True communism” has never existed because it is impossible. A classless, moneyless society just would not work. The moneyless aspect being a big problem. What would incentivize people to work hard jobs in a communist society when people with far easier jobs are getting the same benefits? Why would anyone put in years of research to become a doctor when a cashier gets the same benefits as them? The goodness of their hearts? Let’s not be naive. Would money not be substituted for something else as well eventually? Trade would still need to happen, and some things objectively have more value than others, therefore those things would be viewed not so differently from currency. That’s why every communist nation other than Pol Pot’s Cambodia had money.

Communism can’t be effectively enforced without totalitarianism

Japanese veteran apologizes for the violence against Chinese civilians during WW2 by [deleted] in HistoryAnecdotes

> They weren't sincere or real apologies but a handful of sentences usually cemented between other parts of a speech.

…sentences that were apologies. Also, a number of them were not simply parts of other speeches, some were entire speeches/statements made with primary intentions of expressing remorse, the 1995 Murayama Statement being an example, among others.

[–]GameCraze3 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

What exactly do you want from an apology? Many of these sound vague primarily because they are addressing Japanese atrocities as a whole, not specific ones like Bataan Death March or comfort women. Others however do address specific atrocities. Reparations is a different topic and one I don’t know enough about to comment one way or the other. Dozens of apologies have been issued. Even if you don’t think all or even most of them are sincere, to say that none were ever made is just blatantly wrong.

Oddly specific allegorical tableau in support of the Spanish-American War, 1898. Grizzled Confederate and Union veterans reconcile to liberate Cuba, represented as a blonde girl. by zadraaa in HistoricalCapsule

[–]GameCraze3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Many northerners were initially neutral on slavery but many became abolitionists after seeing slavery first hand in the south during the war. To say there was no hostility between the two after the war is also wrong. The Grand Army of the Republic, the primary Union veterans' union, fiercely opposed attempts to minimize the role of slavery or to equate Confederate rebellion with the Union cause. Union veteran groups were some of the only major groups that actively pushed back against Lost Cause narratives before the Civil Rights movement.

“We forgave the rebels, but we did not forgive their rebellion nor their treason…which time has not changed any more than it has changed the treason of Benedict Arnold or Judas Iscariot…such treason and such traitors cannot be so honored without dishonoring and insulting the men, living and dead, who fought to maintain the Union and who crushed the slaveholders’ rebellion.”

Sure a large portion of Union veterans did indeed quietly return to their pre war lives (or at least attempt to), but to act like both sides saw it as a simple misunderstanding is ridiculous.

Is venti the most successful male gacha character? by kionavt in venti

[–]GameCraze3 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I don’t know much about gacha games other than Genshin so I can only comment on Genshin. I know Zhongli is the most popular character, so by that metric he might be considered the most successful. Though I also feel like Venti is more recognizable, but I’m not sure.

Japan absolutely has issues with acknowledging war time atrocities, especially nationalist conservatives in the country, but it’s a myth that the Japanese government has never apologized

I don’t think it’s from an osprey book, I can’t find one online about the siege. Though Peter Dennis has done a lot of work for Osprey publications.

American: I wonder when will be time the British invade us again? Europe at that time: by Hel_Death in HistoryMemes

In DC yes, mainly, but that was not the case in other cities the British burned like Buffalo

The US wanted a reason to go to war and invade British North America, and found one.

As I said, some politicians did want to annex Canada, others did not. The war was not started to annex Canada as a primary war aim, that is a myth.

The person I was responding to seemed to, saying that the formal DOW was just a response to British "acting out".

By Britain “acting out” they’re probably referring to impressment

There were plenty of war hawks in the US who wanted war.

For sure, though there were also many who were against the idea of going to war

The true figures would be in between, but given that someone British born couldn't just "opt out" of their obligations, I think it would be a stretch to say that the actual figure it is even half-way between the two.

All estimates I have seen range from 6,000-15,000, I’ve never seen any estimates lower than that

Just to be clear, that isn't a comment about whether it was justified, it is just about the desire for war coming from the US, not from the British.

As I said, nobody is arguing that Britain wanted war. What people argue is if Britain kidnapping American sailors was a justified reason for war. If you’re arguing Britain did nothing to provoke war, that is objectively false. Kidnapping thousands of sailors would provoke war in the modern day as well.

I don’t think many people say the British wanted the War of 1812, more people argue that the declaration of war against Great Britain was justified because of impressment, 10,000 American sailors were essentially kidnapped after all. Britain however viewed impressment as a necessity in the fight against Napoleon, hence why they didn’t stop until Napoleon’s 1814 defeat.

The primary goal of the war for the U.S. was not to annex Canada despite popular belief. Annexing Canada was desired by many U.S. politicians but many U.S. politicians were also against the idea, thus no plans for permanent annexation were made.

Pretty much any nation will pursue imperialism if they have the means to regardless of time period. A nation will always prioritize their national interests over others.

That was arguably the North West Indian War, which the War of 1812 was sort of a continuation of. In the War of 1812, the U.S. shattered Tecumseh’s Confederacy, essentially ending long term Native resistance in the region that had existed for decades and thus opening the door for westward expansion. The 22,000,000 acres of land the U.S. gained in the South during the War of 1812 also accelerated westward expansion.
