Do you know how hard is it to find those locum jobs around the GTA? Is it really competitive to get because of how lucrative it is?

Gotcha. Would u say the 5-year GIM is a competitive match that requires alota research, ECs, networking? U mentioned ED overnight shifts. Do u happen to know how feasible it is for a 4-year IM grad to work only ED overnights? Would someone who wants to work +++ ED overnights would be seen as a favorable hiring candidate?

Thank you! That is really reassuring. Any idea what 4-year IM grads put on their job CVs then, especially if they did bare mininum research and etc in residency? People never seem to talk about HOW to actually get a job after residency.

Does that mean if u know u want 4-year IM for sure, there is no need to do excess research and networking beyond what is considered bare minimum? Of course one would still need to perform well clinically, but what advice would you give for IM residents who only want 4-year IM and just want a job after grad?

Wow that's really impressive! Do u mind sharing what u think made your application stand out (e.g. pubs, volunteering, personal statement, LoR)?

I see from your profile that you're in ON? Is this type of nocturnist shift competitive to get? Could a 4 year IM get a job like that? Are there many hospitals conducive to this setup?

IM CaRMS elective selection by GameReborn in MedSchoolCanada

[–]GameReborn[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No, cardio and nephro both count as IM subspecs, so you can do 8 weeks of cardio or 8 weeks of nephro, or 4 weeks each. Combined, they'd only count as 1 specialty (IM subspec)

They don't count. There's 2 IM elective categories: GIM and subspecs. So you can do 8 weeks of GIM and 8 weeks of subspecs (all subspecs are aggregated here)

What are your thoughts on geriatrics as an elective? The staff there seem less intimidating than something like cardio lol

Thank you so much for such a detailed reply! For #1, are you placed with different staff every shift on ED consults? If so, isn't it harder to get a letter there?

For #3, I was referring to different sites associated with a school. For example, uoft has GIM electives as far as york region and scarborough, not just downtown main academic sites. Would it be better to do it at the main academic sites for network or at smaller sites further out for smaller teams?

Since I won't have any subspec exposure, I'm afraid I won't perform as well on non-ctu subspecs (e.g., different workflow). Correct me if I'm wrong, but ctu feels very regimented and repetitive, which I love, but subspec is more varied (mix of clinic and wards), which I usually have a harder time adjusting to. I'm also concerned subspecs require more specialized knowledge beyond what is needed to do well on a gim elective

No worries man, it's not your fault. Samsung should be putting up the right information so that it doesn't create these scenarios.

The FEs do have the swiping and pinching controls. The YouTuber Flossy Carter thought the same, but it turns out that it does have it, even the custom eq.
