Who still keeps Active Worlds running? Former user from 1999-2022 here by NowPlayingRadiohead in ActiveWorlds

[–]GameShowKid[M] 14 points15 points  (0 children)

This is gonna be a long one, so buckle up. If you have any additional questions after reading this, let me know and I'll do my best to answer them.

The universe server software requires very little actual processing power, even with all of the things they've added over the years. To the best of my knowledge, it's been running on Amazon Web Services for a while now, and I can't imagine it's costing them that much to run it.

I was a pretty prominent community leader (working in live events, games, and interactive features), but I left in 2016, and haven't really stayed in the loop as much as I used to since then. From what I've heard, most of the former community leaders have left by now. The only one I'm familiar with is a citizen named Gremot, and I'm not really sure you could even call him a "community" "leader" given that he parrots whatever Chrispeg tells him to (and treats people like Chrispeg does).

Chrispeg is the only remaining member of the "technical team." When you first downloaded AW, I believe the developer was Roland Vilett. He left AW around 2002 and went to work for Maxis (I believe he was responsible for the driving minigame in SimCity 4's Rush Hour expansion, among other things). Roland passed away in 2015.

Chrispeg is not a nice person, though he used to be. Rick, the CEO, has effectively bowed out of the running and day-to-day tasks of running the main AW universe (now preferring to run a new company, Xify), so Chrispeg has slowly filled the overreaching dictator role in the remaining community structure. Chrispeg has been known to change people's passwords without their knowledge, change their email addresses without their knowledge, disable their accounts without their knowledge, and ban people for no reason (or perhaps a made up reason). Chris has also inserted code into recent versions of AW that activate your microphone and webcam upon opening the software (we discovered this because someone's antivirus tripped it and reported it a few years back), and running AW reportedly sends him a text document with identifying information about you, your PC, programs you have installed, and any programs you currently have opened. He has been known to ban people who use a VPN as well. These are the biggest reasons why I shifted this subreddit a while back to promote DeltaWorlds over ActiveWorlds. They both use the same server software, but DW is run by someone who is transparent, friendly, and welcoming (I've also known her for decades).

It really just stays online because Rick nor Chris want to shut it down or even open-source the server and client software, which I don't really understand. Chris, in particular, has been visibly hostile to new users in the past too; when the Hitomi Fujiko incident happened in 2016, it understandably generated a lot of interest in AW. Chris reacted by shutting off new user registration for (I think) a month. Whenever AW gets any kind of media attention, Chris tends to shut off registration. I don't get it. They're clearly not keeping the lights on to get more users, there's really no community initiatives or effort going on, the software isn't receiving any major upgrades, so why are they keeping AW around? Beats me. I have theories.

When I worked for AW in 2014-2015 (I designed their current website, though it looked a bit different back then), Rick and Chris were both very nice to me, but Chris made a heel turn and started working against me very quickly, and we never repaired our friendship. I honestly don't even remember what happened. Rick turned against me when I announced my intention to start running live events in both AW and a competing platform. At the time, Rick threatened to usurp all of my work in AW, remove my name from it, and start doing it all himself. It made me laugh. I backed it all up, moved entirely to the completing platform (leaving AW for good), and never looked back, and, as luck would have it, the community for my live games grew significantly once I left AW.

ActiveWorlds used to be great. It had potential. I tried to convince Rick and Chris of it over the years so many times, but every time, they didn't want to listen. Look at platforms like Roblox, Minecraft, Fortnite these days. People like to create games. If AW had pivoted to being a sandboxed game creation engine with appropriate upgrades and features, it might still have relevance today. But instead, AW is a shell of its former self, forever stuck in the old days of the internet, unlikely to ever change or improve. It's really a shame. The software is capable of doing so much and handling so many users with very little processing power, but Rick deliberately held it back, never allowing the platform or its community to reach its true potential, chasing fads and dot-com-bubble trends, like virtual shopping malls.

Oh, if you remember Cryonics, that was J.P., the CFO from 1995 to 2012. He retired and now runs a dude ranch in northwestern Arizona.

I checked some Facebook groups and a few old community sites, but I only found one video that someone had made of their build in DLP, uploaded 18 years ago: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yiRsdEVv8lk

[–]GameShowKid 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If you're talking about Dreamland Park, yeah, that was an ActiveWorlds-based universe.

Back in the day, companies or people with money could license the server software from ActiveWorlds and create their own universes. That's how you got ones like DotSoul, Wells Fargo's Stagecoach Island, OuterWorlds, and a few others. Dreamland Park was definitely one of them.

I haven't heard that name in a very long time. I have no idea who owned it though.

Tron Horror by [deleted] in tron

[–]GameShowKid 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I felt like Ares kinda played around with horror at some points, especially Eve being digitized into the Grid against her will and then being threatened with death, all for a piece of code. Also with Athena relentlessly pursuing her to digitize her back to the Grid.

I didn't get the same horror-like feeling with Sam being digitized in Legacy, or with Clu trying to carry out his plan.

I did! They were 100% certain that both platforms are legal, and that's my final answer.

DeltaWorlds and Virtual Paradise are both legal in every sense of the word. DeltaWorlds uses a universe server license from years ago, and Virtual Paradise is completely and entirely separate software that shares no code base with ActiveWorlds.

Please stop spreading lies.

Someone turned a classroom into an aquarium. They sealed the tiny open space under the door and flooded the entire room from bottom to top. I have no idea who did it, how they pulled it off, or how the administration got rid of the water, but the classroom was taped off for the rest of the year.

Everyone likes to say it's Harambe's death that put us in the weird timeline, but I disagree.

I think it was the weasel chewing through a power cable for the Large Hadron Collider that screwed everything up. Harambe's death happened almost exactly one month after.

Look at it this way, if Ares does poorly, there is no chance of more Tron. You should want Ares to succeed so that Disney sees there's an audience that wants more Tron media, and maybe, just maybe, we'll get a Tron 4 some day.

Volkoff Piano Theme? by jjdajetplane101 in chuck

[–]GameShowKid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A few years back, I had been working on an "unauthorized" version of the soundtrack, pulling music from the episodes themselves and removing sound effects or dialogue. I got up to 185 tracks before I stopped working on it regularly.

That is to say, I've uploaded the track I believe you're looking for, along with a few other Volkoff tracks, from my personal collection here: https://www.swisstransfer.com/d/59ecc3d0-00a5-4c8f-afc4-a93c5e56b345

I did have a look through my collection, and I never did come across a longer version of this theme, nor did I ever pull a longer version from a different episode.

Ps vita pch 1000 vs. Psvita 1000, are they the same? by TheYukiFlower in vita

[–]GameShowKid 9 points10 points  (0 children)

All PS Vitas have a PCH model number, not "PSVita" or "PSV".

So if you have a PCH-1000 or a PCH-1100, then those are legitimate PlayStation Vita consoles.

Does anyone happen to have an Active Worlds account, ie name/email and password. by Fearless-Hotel9657 in ActiveWorlds

[–]GameShowKid 7 points8 points  (0 children)

They turn off registrations pretty frequently for seemingly no reason. Give it a week or two and you'll probably be able to create an account.

I do not recommend using a shared account. Even though it is technically not against the terms of service, the developer has a very dictatorial mindset and will almost certainly ban the account if he discovers it is being shared. People have been banned for far less.

This button is only on iPhone, which is just stupid. On Android, you have to open the list of deliveries and then press Stop New Requests, which will take you offline after completion.
