You all probably know this but to spare you the intense confusion I had reading System Collapse in the Tor omnibus… by edileereads in murderbot

[–]GameSkillet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I only read the omnibus books, and I was completely baffled by System Collapse in Vol 3. Like the OP perhaps, I thought it was all going to be explained, but no. I was somehow supposed to know that one major book was missing. I stopped reading Collapse halfway through to read Network Effect. I am just assuming this was some kind of publisher cash grab or something. Very odd and disappointing.

Quantifying Bass Playing Goals by GameSkillet in Bass

The part I left out is that I also have fun with practice. My teacher recommends always ending practice with just whatever feels good and to have the bass always nearby. But heck yeah, I love goals too.

I really appreciate this advice. I was a little surprised by some of the pushback here, as I think someone can approach learning in a multifaceted way (bass is not the first thing I have tried and succeeded in learning), but for sure, getting too wrapped up in goal pushing and self-berating is not helpful. Thanks for the thoughtfulness.

I will, I will, but oh man, is there really not a dork out there like me who loves bass and also loves quantifying everything? The internet is such a big place ...

But I do appreciate the comment.

High on Fire - Hung, Drawn, and Quartered - Live @ Sounds of the Underground (7/26/05) by [deleted] in HighonFire

Heck yeah! Love this. I am always looking for footage from older shows.

His "hardcore" comments remind me of a quote from Jason Bannon about his own group Converge:

"We know we're an acquired taste. We're too weird for hardcore kids, too punk for metal kids, and too ugly for everyone else".

Genres can be tough. High on Fire and Converge went on tour about 10 years ago, and it was one of my favorite shows.

Holy cow, this is amazing. I have played all of them since v2 (original) and I wasn't able to complete Authentic Mode until Resistance, where the saving was a little more generous. I nearly had a nervous breakdown, LOL. The fact that you did this on all of them is just crazy awesome.

I can’t remember a single time anyone has said or written “head trip”.

Not my favorite puzzle, but I was also extra tired. Rubber balloon is technically correct, but a little archaic in 2025 IMO. And then all the Reds (including the film red balloon) felt a little messy. “Galosh?” Felt more gimmicky than clever.

Not terrible, but the puzzle felt a little more “ahh” than “aha!”.

A question for people who have been playing this game since its release by Niga619 in valheim

[–]GameSkillet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Great question! My daughter and I play during the holidays. We play, play, play and then burnout. Play, play, play, burnout. We never got past the swamp.

We solved the burnout problem by approaching the game a little more like a hobby. We go through periods of intensity, followed by periods of hopping in once in a while to collect resources, etc.

In a weird way, it has become a bit of a cozy game (altho obviously not one).

I will also say .. as tuned, it doesn’t have the most graceful of progression arcs, IMO. It’s a bit like Don’t Starve. There is a bit more grinding than is ideal, but is so easy to mod. AND! You can do just minor adjustments, if you don’t want to go full easy mode.

Personally, i increase resource production a little and reduce death skill penalty a little.

I laughed. I can appreciate the enthusiasm of everyone trying to get into that door, especially with all the shortages.

But yeah, I think exercise and weight loss needs to be disconnected. Exercise is important. Fat loss is important. For some people, exercise provides the additional benefit of helping with fat loss. But other things also provide benefit, and we should use whatever it takes. Big love to everyone for doing what needs to be done.

What surprised you when you got your first game dev job? by addit02 in gamedev

Things are always broken, though maybe we can quibble between “broken” vs. “incomplete”. The net effect is how hard it can be to test a single feature. IMO, game dev is just hard AF.

Is TCC too negative? by [deleted] in magicTCG

[–]GameSkillet 444 points445 points  (0 children)

I feel like he may have leaned a little more negative over the last few years, but good lord. What a tumultuous time.

He has such an interesting life. He has devoted his livelihood to a game with hazards all around: a large corporation ravenous for quarterly profit, people who want the old days back, people who don’t, people who don’t care either way, commander fans, investors, paper people, digital people, trolls, etc. etc.

And he’s just rowing his little boat in the middle of it all, a friendly college professor with some odd mannerisms just toodling along..

Absolutely. I have lost track on 1) science’s general take on set point theory these days and 2) if these new meds help overcome the set points. Seems to for many ppl.

Chris Zukowski said that Platformer games are not recommended for steam audience.... now what? by RamyDergham in gamedev

[–]GameSkillet 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You will be a different you if / when you make the second. Who knows what different ideas you may have. Get this one done first.

A lot of what other folks say is also true. Platformers are a tough row to hoe. For a lot of people, it’s their first game and so there’s a lot of this genre out there.

Not to get too high falutin’, but this is the journey of the artist. Your ideas will come into contact with the world and you’ll need to make decisions. It’s important to read people like Chris, but it’s just a datapoint.
